We need you to make this shit happen!

Water problems concern all of us, particularly when we live in the driest region of France. Flushing the toilet uses 1/5th of our water consumption. Dry toilets are a real alternative to all of these problems.

The high quality dry toilets that we have developed are a step forward in the world of public toilets. Completely automatic, our cabin is comfortable to use, with no bad odours, and no need for sawdust.

We’re going to clean the cabins several times a day by bicycle and the anti-bacteria hand gel will keep this cabin particularly hygienic. Our cabin is adapted for disabled people and can cope with high demand, especially thanks to the outside urinals. We want to bring a state-of-the-art public toilet to our city that renews our urban space in an ecological sound way.

With the first prototype now installed and working at the Montpellier zoo, we are proud show the public the cabin that we have developed over the past two years

During this two month test period, the collected urine will be used as a fertilizer on a small area of arable land in the IRSTEA compound. This research institute, Ecosec's partner and a specialist in agricultural waste-water re-use, will help us with the development of several sanitary and agronomic tests.

We are setting up a network of subsurface drip irrigation to fertilize ornamental and vegetable plants at a depth of 20cm to demonstrate the fertilizing potential of urine and their power to accelerate the breakdown of waste into compost.

Today, we’d like today to appeal to your generosity in order to shift up a gear in our project. We need to establish a proper workshop, with decent tools and adapted machines.

To do that, we need you. Thank you so much for your support!

Symbolic of an ecological way to treat our most basic waste, these toilets will demonstrate to users that water savings can be made without losing comfort, and to educate people on the importance of composting and recycling.

Nutrients and organic matter from human waste pollute our waterways. However, they can be very beneficial for soils and plants when re-used hygienically. Waste from Ecosec toilets will be managed in a hygienic, ecological and local process. Local re-use is at the center of our approach.

There are many pragmatic and hygienic ways that we could re-use urine in our city centers. From fertilising grass along the tramlines, the football stadium, and in the many parks, urine re-use could be useful, easy and local. Some producers of spirulina are also interested in obtaining urine in large quantities.

The Ecosec cooperative organisation has been developed by local partners. In order to strengthen our commitment to society, Ecosec is dedicated to being an equal opportunities employer, and is committed to employing disabled workers and the long-term unemployed.

The creative commons spirit is accompanying us for the applied researchs, the designs and technology. Ecosec believes in open source and would like to work with the FabLab of Montpellier to build an e-cabin fully connected.

We are four young idealists from Montpellier, Benjamin, Bernard, Vincent and Nicolas, all excited to re-invent our city! With complementary skills, we’re keen to develop new cabins, water-saving products, compost management services, and other complementary products.

Benjamin: A civil engineer specializing in on-site sanitation and father of two children. After working on several continents on ecological sanitation, he developed a great desire to apply these concepts to his home country. The dream was to participate in an ecological transition in the heart of his city, within a cooperative structure, and so the Ecosec project was born.

Bernard: A former technician in monitoring systems and father of three children. A conservationist, he has always wanted to work on these issues within his adoptive city. “Greening” a city sounds complicated, each of us can work towards it in our own way at a local level, large or small.

Vincent: A water-science engineer specializing in the nitrogen cycle. Vincent’s work is dedicated to applied research on urine management. He understands fully the problems of water scarcity and pollution, and to him, the development of dry toilets will play a huge role in the sustainable management of our water resources and fertilizers.

Nicolas: A young business school graduate and passionate about the concept of Social Solidarity Economy. Nicolas is in charge of establishing strong links with local communities to better respond to their problems in public health and organic waste management.

Please help us to continue this adventure!

We’d like to thank all our partners without whom it would have been impossible to make it this far.

Allocation of funds

We started this project a year ago, and have invested a lot in our first cabin prototype and designs, and today we ask you to help us take this to the next step.

Our prototype and designs have generated a lot of interest and we believe that we have reached the stage where we need to invest in a proper workshop, in order to fulfill existing and future orders. We also need to invest in an electric bicycle and a compact aerated composter, as well as compulsory regulatory checks, commercial flyers and a video.

Being supported by a community is very important to us, crowd funding is therefore the way to finance ourselves while maintaining our values. We are only at the beginning of this adventure, and it will be thanks to you that we will be able to prove that urban ecology does not mean going back to the stone age!

If we achieve our initial goal of raising €11,000, we will to set ourselves a second goal of €15,000 which would allow us to develop a series of automated tools to connect our e-cabins: a real-time indicator of the frequency of use, the quantity of collected urine, the temperature and humidity of the compost, cleaning shifts, and so on.
