Geek Politics

It's the story of an idea. The idea which lies behind the Internet. Over the last four decades, a community of values has settled in the brilliant minds of an always growing bunch of hackers who have been refusing to see the web as the new secret weapon of marketing strategies or the greatest tool ever conceived to control people. Nowadays, this idea appears in the guise of a Guy Fawkes mask, an Egyptian revolutionary or a Berlin-based Pirate Party member. They want Internet to be a tool supporting democracy, knowledge and idea sharing and transparency. Policy actors, encoders and decoders of the cyberspace : Geek Politics make the introductions through a webdocumentary.

The project

Since its infancy, Internet contains a powerful political dimension and is now surrounded by issues that are more sensitive than ever : transparency, freedom of information and expression, copyright and intellectual property, technological dependency, among others. Hackers have not waited for Wikileaks and the Arab Spring to dive into policy matters. Too often caricatured as antisocial people only interested in illegally breaking into systems ((the media tend to make no distinction between a cracker and a hacker), the vast majority of the « network wizards » are, in fact, people interested in solving problems, developping clever technical tricks and using technology to improve our societies. They form an infinitely complex community that can be traced to the fifties and sixties.

Today, they're are increasingly getting involved in society issues at a time where governments would like to heavily regulate the web. In Germany, the Chaos Computer Club, recognized by the government as a reliable source of information and advice on technology issues. The Hackerspaces, these areas where the hackers community gets together and plays with matter, are multiplying all over Europe. Pirate Parties have been created in fifty countries to face up the reality of the elections with a policy agenda deeply influenced by the original philosophy behind the net. Geek Politics meets these citizens able to master the intricacies of a network which is now ubiquitous. Most of the interviews are already in English, so even though the webdocumentary will be released in French, a lot of its content will already be watchable by english-speaking people. After the French release, we hope to quickly complete an English version.

The webdocumentary will be distributed in Creative Commons under the CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 License.

Who are we ?

Quentin Noirfalisse : Journalist, author and director. The brain behind Geek Politics

Adrien Kaempf : Cameraman, editor.

Antoine Sanchez : Graphiste, preneur de son, un peu journaliste. Graphist, sound technician, sometimes journalist.

Maximilien Charlier : Camera #2, producer, money hunter.

Why fund it?

Since the beginning, we did everything ourselves. Although we have some knowledge regarding html and CSS, developping an interactive webdocumentary is not in our skills. That's why we're calling you to give us the means to involve a motivated developper in our project.

Webdocumentary development :

4500 euros – Layout and structure tree are done, we only need to transorm them into code.

Last shooting :

500 euros – We have a couple of potentially great interviews that are still waiting for us.

Post-production :

500 euros – It's mainly about recording the voice over and completing the color calibration of the videos.

Goodies :

500 euros – Just to help us funding the gifts we're gonna offer to the kisskissbankers who are going to help us !

Chers amis, chers KissKissbankers, contributeurs de tous poils et donc adeptes de la société de la contribution, amateurs de hacking et de bidouille, et d'une manière de concevoir la technologie en dehors des canevas du marketing ou des gouvernements, Tout d'abord, merci. Allez, on ne va pas se voiler la face, on arrive malgré tout assez loin du bouclage du financement mais votre soutien nous a plu, encouragé...Et, en parallèle de cette collecte, on a quand même pu trouver un développeur (il est jeune, crollé, plein de bonnes idées et calme comme tout bon codeur zen qui se respecte), qui va nous aider à boucler la partie technique du projet. Il n'est donc pas impossible qu'on puisse (dans une mesure peut-être un peu plus modeste) réaliser ce qui était annoncé dans le menu du KissKiss de Geek Politics. On vous donne rendez-vous au tout début septembre, pour la sortie (on croise les doigts !). D'ici là, nous rentrons dans notre tanière, histoire de peaufiner le travail et de vous montrer les presque 3h de contenus vidéos que nous avons monté (interviews en pagaille, sujets plus longs, réflexions et perspectives) sous une forme agréable, le tout agrémenté d'infos de contexte, d'histoire, de bio, etc. En HTML5, comme il se doit...(et en Creative Commons aussi) A très bientôt, Et bon weekend, chers kisskissbankers, L'équipe de Geek Politics, les dents toutes jaunies par le café matinal...

Je soutien à 200% votre projet, je suis énormément les mouvements citoyens qui se s’opèrent, considérant que ce sont des preuves que les citoyens veulent se réapproprier ce qui leur a été volé. Et de plus je travaille sur un projet qui s'oriente autour de ces domaines, votre projet va être d'un grand soutien et une base de réflexion très intéressante. Bon courage pour la suite, et j'espère que ce financement aboutiras :)
