Be part of the final phase of the Barton album. It's already recorded and needs your help to take on the world...

The project

I recorded the first Barton album on my own in 2012 and although I'm very proud of it, I realised something was missing. Other people. These other people to be precise...

Jérémy Morice, Karim Benaziza & Vincent Guibert

So after arranging the songs with producer Vincent Guibert, into the studio we went with a bunch of songs I'd written whilst living in Australia for a year. If the songs sound bigger, that's because Australia is bigger than almost anything else and also because I felt like writing songs inspired by the music I'd grown up listening to. That big warm sound that came from west coast America in the 70s. Steely Dan, The Eagles, Rickie Lee Jones and co that I occasionally hear echoes of in modern day artists like Josh Rouse & John Mayer to name but two.

So that's how 4 guys ended up in a disused water mill in the Angers (France) countryside last July recording songs inspired from the other side of the world and another era. It was stupidly hot. There are no photos of me because I wore practically nothing the whole week. Karim (drummer) wore so little I could sell the few photos I have of him on ebay for a substantial amount. Now there's a possible funding angle...

Somehow, despite the heat we managed to record 11 songs. All of us playing live in one room with the amplifiers expertly tucked away in distant corners by our diligent sound engineer Olivier Fournier.

We loved how it sounded straight away and at the end of the week came away safe in the knowledge that a great album was taking shape. Over the next year we added more guitars, brass, extra guitars, piano, Hammond organ, a few more guitars, female backing vocals and arrived where we are now. One last push...

Over the next 6 weeks I'll be releasing short videos of us playing the songs live in the studio. Follow us on

Facebook or Twitter to see them as soon as they're released. Here's the first one...

Why fund it?

The songs were written, demoed, rehearsed then recorded by a bunch of very talented people in various locations at various times of day & night. Up to this point we have funded this project ourselves. Now we need YOUR help for the last part so this album we've put heart and soul into over the last few years can finally exist in the outside world.

- We need to mix the album, so it sounds as great as we know it to be.

- We need to master the album so it sounds even better! (Mastering is a final technical stage in a recording chain. A bit like applying the varnish to a painting)

- We need graphics & design work so the album stands out

- We need to press CD & vinyl copies so you can all marvel at the amazing graphics and hear the album!

For this to happen we need 6000€ (Euros)

- Album mix: 3000€

- Album mastering: 1000€

- CD & Vinyl pressing: 2000€

Any (incredibly generous!) funding over & above 6000€ will be used for promotional videos.

Barton Hartshorn

Barton Hartshorn is quietly and sometimes noisily putting the English country village he was named after on the map. When he's not writing and recording his own songs, he's playing drums for other projects, (Angus Stone, Gossling, Bo, The liberation of Colette simple) writing novels and short stories or making ever more elaborate curries. The songs... See more
