The project

Who are we ?

Coràson - Chamber Choir was born in 2012 from the minds of a small core of French and Italian friends who came together for one common passion: choral song.

Today, this niçoise choir is 60 members strong and is led by a young, talented and very charismatic director, Sarmad Khoury.

Dynamic and multilingual due to the many different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds that make up Coràson (France, Italy, England, Spain, Germany, Ecuador, Tunisia, Peru, Mexico, the United States, Iraq, Syria, etc.), Coràson's choristers share many common values, such as generosity, joine de vivre, work ethic and harmony.

The Association

Coràson is a registered French non-profit association under law 1901, and prides itself on being a real player in the local culture of this region, actively participating in the nearby rural areas and striving towards a sense of sharing and openness.

The association has, for three years now, been committed to promoting the choral practice within the greater public, acting as a true component of a society that is moving forward toward the future.

Coràson's focus is in providing accessibility to this style of song to everyone using essential learning as a key for our singers who do not come from a musical background.

This has allowed us to for a mixt choral group that has a homogeneous level that is able to to meet the demands of the art of Choral and to fully ensure the fulfillment of our increasingly ambitious artistic projects.

Coràson - Chamber Choir will be quite grateful for your support that will assure us continued success in our projects and our goals.

Why fund it?

Beyond our various concerts, this year our new project is to record our first CD!

We must, however, collect 2000 € in order to fund our project.

These funds will be spent as follows:

      Choir director's salary: 250 €

      Pianists salary: 100 €

Rental of the church: 150 €

Recording, mixing and remastering expenses: 800 €

Printing of the CD's and producing of the CD covers: 700 €

Fees paid to KissKissBankbank: 200 €

(All funds collected that exceed our goal will be applied to our 2016 budget).

This CD will not only serve as a "business card" to introduce Corason, but as a record of our efforts as well.

Ideally, the recording will take place in April 2016, and will focus on our 2015/2016 repertoires: "Noel selon Coràson" et "Mare nostrum".

We are really motivated but we need your financial support in order to complete this project. With your help we can keep each chorister's annual membership fees low in order to remain accessible to talented individual who come from diverse backgrounds.

The Administrative Council Team of 10 volunteers and the entirety of the choristers ask you for your great gift of generosity!

Thank you for your support.

Corason - Chamber Choir

Corason was born in October 2012 among a small group of friends who shared the same passion for choral choir song. And today, Corason's spirit comes from our desire to exchange, to create, to establish and to take root as active participants in the local choral culture. Our primary objective is to broaden the local appeal of the emerging choral... See more

FAQ Questions about the project

+ Who is Corason's artistic director?

“An unending quest for musical identity within an eclectic universe full of new sounds”. These are the key words that epitomize the commitment of our young choir director, Sarmad Khoury. Originally from Syria, Sarmad is studying Musicology and Piano at the Institut Supérieur de Musique et d'Art Dramatique de Damas. In parallel, he has been accepted to the Chamber Choir directed by professor Victor Babenko with whom he is working to further develop his abilities in musical composition and choir direction.

Sarmad moved to Nice in 2010, and in 2012 earned his Master in Musical Research. Soon after, he began his thesis on the Russian Avant-garde of the eary 20th century under the direction of professor Jean-Louis Leleu. Sarmad draws inspiration from his thorough knowledge of the musical perspective of the 20th century and his choir experience in order to continue to create and develop Corason. Likewise, Sarmad works in collaboration with Corason's founders to give form to this relatively new experiment: the notion of a chamber choir progressively becoming an original intuition based on feeling and musical gesture within different genres.

Our repertoires:
Following two musical projects designed around specific musical themes (a folkloric voyage through the Songs of the World in 2013-2014 and Memories of Armenia in 2014-2015), our next musical project for 2015-2016 has been designed under the symbol of diversity: diverse musical and vocal styles in the first repertoire combining sacred and contemporary music, jazz, humorous lyric stage and Russian music from the 20th century, while 2016's repertoire will be dedicated to different musical cultures and traditions from the greater Mediterranean region.

+ What are our repertoires?

“Noel selon Coràson” - first semester of 2015/2016
This great choir that Corason has become will be heading into a new adventure filled with styles and genres that to date we have not yet embarked upon: the sacred, the humorous and lyric, men's and women's vocal ensembles, mysteries of the night. A night of watchfulness, of war, of laughter, of snow and of love. A Christmas night like no other!

“Mare Nostrum” - second semester of 2015/2016
Songs from the countries of the Mediterranean region that we will reveal while traveling from Syria to Spain, of course passing through Greece, Turkey and France.

“Memories of Armenia” - second semester of 2014/2015
The choristers of Corason made a stop in Armenia via their “Songs of the World” repertoire from the first season. They were so enchanted by this universe, not knowing whether they had entered it, or if it had entered into them, they chose to go back for a longer stay in this land and its culture of song, surrendering to inner thoughts, nature and its inward expression.

“Musical Anthology of Both Americas” - first semester 2014/2015
Corason's first “American” songbook. The journey invoked the origins of the current musical genres of voice in the United States, and it chronologically enumerated the most striking and contrasted styles. While discovering South America, however, Corason swung between Argentinian Tango from Gardel and Piazolla, Mexican Bolero and the Bossa Nova from Carnaval.

“Songs of the World” - 2013/2014
This first repertoire crossed the different musical cultures of the past as well as the present in order to embrace the most emblematic songs. An open portal to an immense living museum where France's secular songs of the 16th century, the characteristic music of South American danse, the traditional song of the Far East and the music of Central Europe met side by side. This voyage into a vast world was a new attempt to not only make it part of us, but also to become part of it.
