The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."</strong></em><strong> – Pablo Picasso</strong></div> <div>  </div> <div> At the Anjali Photo Workshops for the kids of Anjali House, we seek to nurture the artist in each and every child. </div> <div>  </div> <div> Indeed, the workshop aims to use photography as a tool to foster creativity – an important part of education and a key tool in encouraging self-confidence, social interaction and educational development. </div> <div>  </div> <div> Says Sheila Zhao, who has been returning as a workshop tutor: “<strong><em>For the kids, I believe this opportunity gives them a sense of accomplishment and allows them to explore their creativity in a safe, nurturing, and meaningful manner.</em></strong>” </div> <div>  </div> <p> <img alt="02_anjali-0217" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/36505/02_anjali-0217.jpg" /></p> <p> <em>Sheila Zhao with her group in 2011.</em></p> <div>  </div> <div> The workshops complement the ultimate goal of Anjali House - to help the children develop into healthy, well-adjusted young adults, equipped with the skills and support to be successful in their future endeavors. </div> <div>  </div> <div> Let’s take a peek at what goes on during the workshops! </div> <div>  </div> <p>  </p> <p> Around 50 children from Anjali House are selected by Sam Flint, director of Anjali House, to participate in the workshops. The children are then divided into different groups, each headed by a tutor. <p>  </p> <p> All the photographs you are about to see in this post are by Chan Sokdam, a talented Cambodian youth whose flair for photography would earn him his first solo photography exhibition at the young age of 17.</p> <p>  </p> <p> The youngest of four siblings, Chan Sokdam was born in Preah Vihear in 1993. He was only five years old when his father passed away, and Sokdam had no choice but to work to support his family instead of attending school. </p> <div>  </div> <p>  </p> <p> <img alt="01_11sokdam_copy_2" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/34304/01_11SOKDAM_copy_2.jpeg" /></p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p> <p> Unable to make ends meet, Sokdam's mother left with his older siblings to look for work in Thailand, leaving Sokdam with his elderly grandmother in Preah Vihear. After his grandmother died in 2004, Sokdam lived with his neighbors and earned some money for himself by taking care of goats in the village.</p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p> <p> <img alt="02_06sokdam_copy_2" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/34305/02_06SOKDAM_copy_2.jpeg" /></p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p> <p> In 2006, Sokdam decided to leave his native province for Siem Reap, which was then a growing tourism center in Cambodia. Hitching a ride from Preah Vihear, he arrived in Siem Reap in April 2006. He joined a group of boys living near the local Psar Leu wholesale market, sharing a small room with eight other boys without any money or income. He earned his food by cooking and cleaning for the other boys.</p> <div>  </div> <p>  </p> <p> <img alt="03_09sokdam_copy_2" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/34306/03_09SOKDAM_copy_2.jpeg" /></p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p> <p> After some time, Sokdam realized he wanted a better life for himself. With no adult supervision and support, the boys had fallen into alcohol and drug abuse. After three months, with no money or belongings to call his own, he set off to find someone who could help him.</p> <div>  </div> <p>  </p> <p> <img alt="04_15sokdam_copy_2" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/34308/04_15SOKDAM_copy_2.jpeg" /></p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p> <p> Sokdam arrived at Anjali House in July 2007. After talking with him to find out more about his situation, Anjali House accepted him into their program and found him a place to stay at a local Christian mission. </p> <div>  </div> <p>  </p> <p> <img alt="05_07sokdam_copy_2" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/34307/05_07SOKDAM_copy_2.jpeg" /></p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p> <p> Anjali House also helped Sokdam to find his mother, who was now living in Poilet, a town next to the Thai border. His elder siblings are still living and working in Thailand, and they remain untraceable. His mother had remarried and was now living with her new husband. However, their family income was too small to support Sokdam as well, and so he had no choice but to remain in Siem Reap.</p> <div>  </div> <p>  </p> <p> <img alt="06_14sokdam_copy_2" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/34309/06_14SOKDAM_copy_2.jpeg" /></p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p> <p> While he was a full-time resident at Anjali House, Sokdam received support for both his living and schooling expenses. <p> Anjali House is an NGO created in 2005, registered in France and Cambodia providing food, shelter, healthcare and education for up to 110 underprivileged children in Siem Reap.</p> <p> <img alt="Anjali-fc-2008_-_03" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/32114/ANJALI-FC-2008_-_03.jpg" /></p> <p> It is in 2005 that a group of photographers got together and created the Angkor Photo Festival to promote photography and highlight humanitarian issues in Southeast Asia. </p> <p> As it was important to them to take into account the environment in which the festival would take place they got the idea to create the Anjali House.</p> <p> <img alt="Lsb.cam.1171" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/32110/LSB.CAM.1171.JPG" /></p> <p> Anjali first began as a one-off dance troupe, led by Sangeeta Isvaran, and a photography workshop initiated by Magnum Photos photographer Antoine d’Agata. Galvanised by the difference that first edition made, the Angkor Photo Association was inspired to expand its help, and pledged to provide education and practical support to the children and their families.</p> <p> <img alt="Anjali-fc-2008_-_08" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/32111/ANJALI-FC-2008_-_08.jpg" /></p> <p> The Sanskrit word "anjali" translates to "offerings" in English. Anjali House is therefore a house of offerings for local children in need.</p> <p> <img alt="001904sokdam05" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/32109/001904sokdam05.jpg" /></p> <p> There, the children receive nutritious meals and clean filtered water, along with classes in basic hygiene and free medical and dental care.</p> <p> <img alt="P1050615_2" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/32116/P1050615_2.jpg" /></p> <p> All of the children are provided with free school supplies and registered in local schools, and Anjali House also conducts lessons in English and Khmer, while engaging the children in sports activities and creative arts classes. <p> <img alt="Kkbb_sophal1" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/28795/KKBB_Sophal1.jpg" /></p> <p> It has been almost five years since Try Sophal first walked through the gates of Anjali House, an action that would bring big changes into her life.</p> <div class="embed"> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="405" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QKhLtW051_s?wmode=opaque&feature=oembed" width="540"></iframe></div> <p> Born in 1988 in Cambodia’s Takeo province, Sophal was born into a poor family and did not have the chance to go to school. When she was a child, she had to stay home to care for brothers and sisters. Just like many other Cambodian children from underprivileged backgrounds, Sophal had no choice but to start working when she was older so as to help contribute to the family’s income. She was sent by her parents to sell flowers on the streets of Siem Reap so as to earn some money. </p> <p> <img alt="Kkbb_sophal_3" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/28803/KKBB_Sophal_3.jpg" /></p> <p> Sophal continued this way of life until she was 17 years old, when she first came across Anjali House in 2008.</p> <p> Created in 2005 by the Angkor Photo Association, Anjali House is a Cambodia and France-registered NGO that provides food, shelter and education to underprivileged children in Siem Reap. Each year, the Angkor Photo Festival organises the Anjali Photo Workshops – a special workshop for around 50 children of Anjali House where they are tutored by volunteer photographers to create their own photographs.</p> <p> <img alt="Kkbb_sophal010" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/28822/KKBB_Sophal010.jpg" /></p> <p> Sophal first participated in the Anjali Photo Workshops in 2009, and was selected as one of eight students to work one-on-one with a tutor. She teamed up with Sohrab Hura, a well known Indian photographer and coordinator of the Anjali Photo Workshops.</p> <p> <img alt="Kkbb_sophal6" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/28816/KKBB_Sophal6.jpg" /></p> <p> Sophal’s talent and potential quickly shone through. “Angkor Photo Festival gave me the chance to fall in love with photography during the Anjali workshops,” says Sophal.</p> <p> <img alt="Kkbb_sophal2" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/28797/KKBB_Sophal2.jpg" /></p> <p> In June 2010, she won First Prize at the inaugural You Khim Memorial Women’s Art Prize for her photo, <em>The Life of an Apsara</em>.</p> <p> That same year, she had her first solo photo exhibition, ‘<em>My Life and Dreams</em>’ at the Angkor Photo Gallery. during the 6<sup>th</sup> Angkor Photo Festival.</p> <p> <img alt="Kkbb_sophal7" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/28801/KKBB_Sophal7.jpg" /></p> <p> In 2011, as part of the 7<sup>th</sup> Angkor Photo Festival, she had a joint exhibition with another former Anjali House kid, Sokdam. Their photographs on the work of the NGO The Halo Trust was exhibited in the gardens of the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor. The Raffles host her second solo exhibition, <em>Portfolio</em>, in the hotel itself.</p> <p> <img alt="Kkbb_sophal4" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/28818/KKBB_Sophal4.jpg" /></p> <p> Last year, she was accepted as a participant of the prestigious Angkor Photo Workshops, where she completed a photo essay project under the guidance of Magnum photographer Antoine d’Agata. Her work was shown to the public on the Closing Night of the 9<sup>th</sup> Angkor Photo Festival, along with all the other workshop participants. </p> <p> It was also thanks to Anjali House that Sophal had the chance to go back to school. She received a scholarship to attend public school, and although there was pressure from her family for her to return to working full-time, Anjali House helped to find her a part-time job so that she could still continue her education, especially English classes.</p> <p> <img alt="Kkbb_sophal9" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/28819/KKBB_Sophal9.jpg" /></p> <p> Today, Sophal works for The Halo Trust, a British NGO specialising in landmine clearance.
