Depuis un bon demi-siècle, Le Caire s’est inventé un insolite moyen de distribution du pain. Ses funambules à vélo surgissent comme des étoiles filantes, remontent en sens interdit les interminables files de voitures, glissent entre deux rangées de chaises d’un café puis disparaissent dans un bazar, tenant sur leur tête une planche de bois avec plusieurs centaines de galettes de pain et de l’autre leur guidon. L’avenir de ces figures familières du Caire reste pourtant tout aussi fragile que celui du Sphynx. Le cyclonaute Claude Marthaler s’est rendu sur place pour raconter la vie de l’un d’eux. Le baron Karl Drais, inventeur de la Laufmachine (la machine à courir, l'ancêtre de la bicyclette), est né à Karlsruhe le 29 avril 1785. Le 12 juin 1817, il effectue le premier trajet à draisienne de Mannheim en direction du relais de Schwetzingen et retour, soit quelques 14km 400! L’aube n’est qu’un lointain présage lorsque sur l’écran, fixé contre l’accueil pour cause de bise, s’élance le «pilote», comme on dit dans le jargon, transportant son «avion» de 50 kilos sur la tête. Comprenez que Hamada, 29 ans, livreur de pain depuis 14 ans, dévale les rues du Caire à bicyclette, souvent à contresens, une planche de 2 mètres de long surmontée de près d’un millier de pains sur la tête. Et parfois les bras croisés, la go pro sous «l’avion», ce qui suscite un gloussement à la fois amusé et ébahi des matineux. Le cyclonaute Claude Marthaler a réalisé Bike for bread avec Raphaël Jochaud, grâce à un financement participatif sur le net. En décembre dernier, il est parti au Caire pour filmer ces «acrobates» qu’il n’avait vus «nulle part ailleurs dans le monde». Le Genevois qui a traversé le globe en petite reine cherche un producteur pour poursuivre le projet et réaliser des documentaires autour du vélo comme instrument de travail dans les pays du Sud. La projection ce mercredi de ce premier film est un événement singulier, organisé dans le cadre de «Cinéma Sud», mis en place par Helvetas, qui s’installe aux Bains des Pâquis jusqu’à dimanche. Pour la troisième année consécutive, quatre cyclistes se partagent la Suisse allemande et romande à vélo, en tirant dans un chariot une cinquantaine de kilos de matériel pour poser leurs panneaux solaires un peu partout. «C’est un boulot d’été de rêve, pour moi», confie Claude Marthaler, en beurrant des tartines après avoir répondu aux nombreuses questions du public en fin de projection. Le cycliste a déjà sillonné les routes de Suisse avec un autre Genevois, Quentin Luthy, sur 800 kilomètres. Dimanche, ils reprendront la route: Carouge, Nyon, Vevey et Fribourg, avec dans leur chariot, outre Bike for bread, des films de cinq réalisateurs du Sud. Arriver avec son cinéma accroché au vélo, ça change le regard des gens? «Oui, il y a une simplicité des moyens qui plaît. Ce sont aussi des thèmes qui passent peu en salles. Le cinéma est vu d’une manière moins formelle. On a passé de magnifiques soirées d’été avec l’écran accroché haut dans les arbres. Ruth Vandewalle, notre fixeuse et interprète, en présence d' Hamdy, un breadman, vient de nous envoyer cette photo du Caire: <img alt="Ruth_and_hamdy_the_bread_man" src="https://kkbb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/project_image/image/1185/Ruth_and_Hamdy_the_bread_man.jpg"> C'est en terminant son master en études arabiques et moyen-orientales que Ruth Vandewalle découvrit l'Egypte et ne quitta plus le pays. Pendant le "printemps arabe" du 25 janvier 2011, elle commença à collaborer en tant que productrice et interprète pour plusieurs chaînes de télévision hollandaise et belge. Parlant couramment l'arabe et connaissant les moindres recoins du Caire, elle aide les réalisateurs de documentaires TV ou autres, de A à Z, de l'obtention de permis de filmer au transport, aux interviews, à la traduction et à la rédaction. Ruth aime pédaler à travers le trafic chaotique du Caire, toujours en route vers de nouvelles rencontres, à l'écoute de leurs histoires.

Incaricato di progetti da parte della PSA Peugeot Citoren dal 2003 al 2008, si è riorientato un anno più tardi verso il mestiere di giornalista e reporter di immagini, e segue da un anno la sezione giornalismo dell’EICAR (Ecole Internationale de Création Audiovisuel et de Réalisation). Il suo amore per la montagna lo ha portato naturalmente a specializzarsi nella ripresa di corse in montagna e vie di scalata. Il suo documentario La Grande Traversée des Alpes è stato selezionato ai festival Grand Bivouac e Fontanil. Questa estate, ha attraversato le Alpi in bici. Questo “cameraman acrobatico” ama tutte le avventure che richiedono dell’impegno fisico e tecnico, ma ciò che apprezza più di tutto è filmare con passione la sensibilità che c’è in ognuno di noi. Nel 2005 ha finito gli studi di geografia, geologia e ecologia generale a Berna. Roman Droux lavora da venti anni nel campo dei film e dei video, guadagnando numerosi premi per i documentari che gira e produce. Per rendere possibile l’impossibile, faremo la scrittura, le riprese e il montaggio del film senza alcuna remunerazione. Rimangono tuttavia delle spese ineliminabili: 500 € per l’interprete francese-arabo al Cairo 1200 € per la traccia audio 400 € per la voce narrante 900 € per la traduzione e il doppiaggio delle interviste in arabo durante la post-produzione. Raphaël présentera la bande-annonce de lancement du projet et un court-métrage sur sa récente traversée des Alpes à vélo avec sa compagne.
