We're delighted to unveil this collaboration, CA VA BARDER, as our first fiction movie.
This film is an obvious fact for us. It embodies an achievement of our friendship, and what we've come to be able to accomplish, individually and together, so far.
To make it happen, each of us has a his own task according to his own skillset and experience. But we work as a team, listening to each other's needs and helping for the greater good in every way we can.
MAKING THE MOVIE
Théo will be responsible of photography direction, tasked with scenography, lighting, aesthetics, caring of all the visual details. A precious skill on set he developed throughout his photography work, especially by an ability to identify relevant people or places, and make up a story from them. Lucas will be the main camera operator and the editing director as well. He's obviouly talented to compose efficient framing in every and any set configuration. His sharp eye combined with perfectionism give us unlimited trust in his work. Also, he will bring his precious ideas all along the process, especially during the editing phase where the movie will be decomposed and reconstructed. Thibault, in charge of the direction, is writing the script, the dialogs, the characters and their relationships. The biggest part of his work is before the shooting. He also will be directing the actors on set and he will play one of the characters. It will be his second cinematographic production. In addition, he's a photographer and a comedian. We are three best friends from Normandy, France and we have spent our childhood between Le Havre and Rouen.
We have met in our youth, then we have become friends and grown up together.
Each of us have made his own path, studied in different schools in separate cities without losing sight of each other.
Even better, we have sticked together in both our personal and professional lives. We have created lots of things together.
Today, we're about to create our first movie as a trio.
For this, we have gathered an effective team with us.
The most trusted team we can have : our friends
Auden (Adrien Daucé) will create the original soundtrack of the movie, which will be its backbone. Always present, vibrant, it will be a creation all along the script. Emmanuel Vivenot will be in charge of sound recording. His presence on the movie set will be very important, for his calm, wisdom and most positive spirit. He will attend a class in the field of sound recording to be the most efficient he can, as sound quality is vital for any movie.
Matthieu Brochec will play Matthieu, 28. He's called by Thibault to work on a motel renovation site. He hopes to make a load of money.
Victor Mieusement will play Victor, 26. He's Matthieu's friend and he will go with him in Nevada, USA, to work on the motel renovation site.
Emmanuel Rosario will play Emmanuel, 30, owner of a cheap motel in the north of Nevada.
Thibault Lévêque will play Thibault, 27, coming from a wealthy family. He attempted to live the american dream with his family's money but his life turned to be a nightmare.
Intention note :
This movie is a burning, vibrant, steamy comet, always under the tension brought by the sound track, but also sweet through the relationships between the characters, even if those will turn to uncontrolled ultraviolence at some point. In short, when this inherent tension fades away, it leaves the room to the youth's energy.
Every minute of the movie must be a cradle for vibrations, smells, smoke, strange and beautiful lights, extremely elegant and shaking frames.Refined details. Characters must be beautiful and fantastic in every sequence. We want the viewer to fall in love with the characters and feel for them. Their attitudes must be sensual, reckless and naïve at the same time because that's what they have in common despite their differences of personality. This is what defines our generation : they're lost, and beautiful because of it.
The characters are original and improbables, they are rare and attaching regardless of their flaws. The viewer must be touched by the relationships they build together. They care about each other but they're selfish, they're greedy but so human. They are weak and sensitive, very vulnerables. Also, they're very simple people, not intellectuals, pretty raw. We love them, we want to be with them.
The movie is an accumulation of sins and vices, lost in an american dream far from the fantasy we had imagined.
Non judgmental, merely an exposé of who we are when we embrace questionable endeavors, because we can be driven with ulterior motives : power, fame, money, profit, interests. But also vices such as deceit, gambling, greed, lies, alcohol and other addictions. In this drug-fueled chaos, a story of love and friendship turns to rape, the situation is explosive.
The movie's lighting and general mood will be aligned with that. Very elaborate, we will take the necessary amount of time to create the fantasy we imagine.
Sound will most certainly recorded with perch, we also hope to get HF mics. Dialogs will be central, as well as multiple sound recordings of ambient sample, city noise, people passing by, footsteps in the snow, wind, doors, dogs, conversations in various places we can meticulously place in the movie to recreate a live experience. Sound matter of the movie will be a lever as powerful as the images to keep the viewer captive of this world we create.
An off-voice is structuring the narrative with memories, quotes, descriptions, poetry, jokes. There can be long sequences with only an off-voice.
Nevada, winter, snow, short days, crappy town. Thibault is the son of a wealthy French family. He settled down in the United States two years ago to live the American dream. What he thought to be his destiny. He wanted to live like those rich fancy frenchies one can see in prime time TV shows and who spend all their money in California.
He screwed up everything. Spent all his legacy money in various excesses. He's a drug addict who can't stop asking his Mom for money, leading her to cut ties with him. He's abandoned in the US and his life is a nightmare. Broke, he doesn't have any news of his family and wanders from town to town with his last bucks. However, he keeps pretending on social medias he's living a dream.
He stopped in Wendover, a town full of casinos along the border between Utah and Nevada. He lives in a motel and try to connect with locals. He will attempt to build wealth again, at least make enough money to buy his plane ticket back to France.
Matt has an awesome opportunity to go make money in the USA, on a construction site located in Nevada (the movie set will be choosen at the moment depending on our crush). It's Thibault, an old accointance of Matthieu who seem to be successful France (according to his Instagram account) and settled in the US, who has put him on payroll.
Matthieu has immediately been seduced by one of Thibault's posts, announcing a position on a construction site for a contract worth of 30 000 dollars. The job is to carry renovation work in a motel. He then propose his services to Thibault, hoping to get a part of the money. He brings in his best friend forever, Victor, to add to the manpower.
Thibault accepts Matthieu and Victor offer as a boon for him, who doesn't know the first thing about manual work. He already sees the money flowing in his hands while letting the two lackeys doing all the hard work.
The two stooges set foot on American soil with their minds full of dreams.
Trap's set, nothing will go as they hoped for.
All places selected are pretty similar.
They all relate to the mood we want for the movie, they're all small or middle sized, passage cities. They resemble each other sometimes to maintain visual unity.
Isolated, non-touristic towns but still inhabited in a flat desert land, afoot snowy landmarks. Also, towns in much more mountainous landscapes. Lights will be amazing with snow acting as a natural reflector, and at night with street lights and storefront neons.
5.00 PM : inbound landing at LAX.
6.00 PM : Minibus rental.
First night in Los Angeles.
Picking up gear rental and various acquisitions to save time on the road. Buying props and useful stuff for the film, last preparations.
GoldField/Tonopah (Nevada) -3°/8°
These are two adjoining cities.
It's about 5h drive from LA. The purpose of the trip is not to eat up miles, but to settle in different places so we can shoot effectively.
We'll rent motel rooms and start shooting there. Evening will be spent together to derush and work on new ideas.
We will stay in this town if it proves cinematographically worthy.
West-Wendover, Nevada / Wendover, Utah -4°/5°
5h drive, and we'll travel similar landscapes as the surroundings of Tonopah and Goldfield, a blessing for us.
We can take our time on the road, stop at thrift stores, in places appealing to us.
We should stay a week or so in this area. This will be the main town in the script (unless last minute change).
Many other cities up north have also been selected. We will go there if the previously visited places aren't snowy enough.
Burns, Oregon -5°/6°
A 6h30 drive is required to get there, it's earmarked for the movie but if a more interesting place is spotted on the way, we will stop there. In the worst case, we know we can be inspired by this dark Oregon city.
Joseph, Oregon -7°/4°
A 5h drive.
Anaconda, Montana -9°/4°
An 8h drive.
Bozeman, Montana -9°/
A 2h drive to reach this pretty large city.

Allocation of funds
INTENDED USE OF FUNDS
The crowdfunding will be used to fund all expenses required for such a shooting. All plane tickets are already bought by each crewmember. Minibus rental for transportation is also paid already by the crew.
Step 1 - Strict minimum (treshold) : 5340€
- Gas for the 15-seats minibus : 400€
We will be a maximum of 8 people with all our gear, so we need a large minibus to transport everything, shelter in warmth on site if necessary and think positively.
- Motel rooms, background artists, various expenses : 3990€
- Sound recording class for Emmanuel Vivenot : 150€
- Sound gear (basic) rental for 1 month : 600€
- Light gear (basic) and smoke machine rental for 1 month : 200€
Step 2 - More money for a better film (objective) : 7490€
- Clothing, background props, unexpected expenses : 650€
- Sound gear (advanced) rental for 1 month : 550€ more
- Post production budget. If we encounter problems during post production, we can afford the help of a professional : 950€
