El-Rihla (Le voyage)

This film intends to document the resettlement of the Algerian Muslim population in camps and villages during the Algerian war of independence (1954-1962). Drawing on personal memories of Algerians resettled during the war and French soldiers who served in the region, it aims to reconstruct the history of resettlement in one village in particular, the village of Mansourah, the village of my father, in the South of Kabylia, Algeria.

I inform you of good news! The film is finished and it was selected in international competition at the prestigious "Visions du réel" festival in Switzerland. The world premiere of the film will take place on April 6th and 7th. <a href="https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visionsdureel.ch%2F2019%2Ffilm%2Fin-mansourah-you-separated-us%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR0KylVN-QgGFDpcXKOt8EkqE_6_GdBzwm8gmT7y-OPKqfQm8UI2BdzaR3E&amp;h=AT1ItmKsBI86LmsCHWl7-Z_8vWDg9Kev8yNDOCm1vowARzdgH-3GmlbrnUT_EMDnKhpDqZBi1rZrooYMGpGiP2cH9Phdzc7apGnLK02r03PVNG9pxeB3M8pzlB9EaoLIq6CKug8" target="_blank">https://www.visionsdureel.ch/2019/film/in-mansourah-you-separated-us</a> That's it, it's happening in the end. It's hard to believe when it's happening! I have been working on this film for the past six years. I did not think it would be this difficult to access and understand silenced memories. But my father and the villagers of Mansourah greatly helped me! And there were all those important encounters, producers in France (les films du bilboquet), Algeria (HKE production) and Denmark (Sonntag Pictures) who worked so hard for this film to come to light, a wonderful team for the image and sound recording and editing, inspiring mentors in cinema all over the world who believed in this project. And after all, I had no choice. I had to make this movie. I had to share this history, of which I knew nothing but silence. My father watched the movie this weekend for the first time. I had not revealed anything to him before. He was very touched by the film and found it very beautiful. I hope you enjoy it too! He regretted only one scene absent from the film. The one where he fed a small cat in the family home in Mansourah. I asked him why. "Because the cat is the symbol of revolt and freedom, the symbol of Algeria, in a nutshell," he replied. A beautiful image to tell the story of Algeria yesterday and today. Finally, I enclose an article I wrote for the French newspaper Le Monde on a new initiative put in place by the National Office of Veterans and war victims (ONACVG), under the supervision of the Ministry of the Armed Forces in France, to pass on memories of the Algerian war from all actors of the war. More than 50 years later, even the highest institutions in France understand the need to shed light on the darkest parts of our history to prevent a violent return of repressed memories. <a href="https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lemonde.fr%2Fsociete%2Farticle%2F2019%2F03%2F19%2Fdes-lyceens-face-aux-memoires-plurielles-de-la-guerre-d-algerie_5438065_3224.html%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR3a7KpRVeOdiYASR2HnFShCa0xnKK7vDftySoRpKgzQRb-xAXrBK0RhnDQ&amp;h=AT1ItmKsBI86LmsCHWl7-Z_8vWDg9Kev8yNDOCm1vowARzdgH-3GmlbrnUT_EMDnKhpDqZBi1rZrooYMGpGiP2cH9Phdzc7apGnLK02r03PVNG9pxeB3M8pzlB9EaoLIq6CKug8" target="_blank">www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2019/03/19/des-lyceens-face-aux-memoires-plurielles-de-la-guerre-d-algerie_5438065_3224.html</a>) May our societies find solace and this film be well-received in France, Algeria and elsewhere in the world. A bientôt !</p><p>......</p><p>Dear all,</p><p>I am writing to send you (finally!) news about the film project, which will soon be a film.</p><p>We shot the film in Algeria last November. I worked with a great team. The film was shot by Hassen Ferhani, filmmaker and director of photography of the beautiful documentary film "A Roundabout in My Head". The sound was recorded by sound engineer Mohammed Ilyes Guetal.</p><p>After completing filming, we started editing the film. I worked with Mélanie Braux, an editor of documentary and fiction films. Mélanie has edited beautiful documentary films such as Vanina Vignal's "After the Silence" and Amédée Pacome Nkoulou's "Boxing Libreville". She was even assistant editor of the film "The Pianist" by Roman Polanski, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002.</p><p>Speaking of Cannes, we also went to the Cannes Film Festival to show film sequences at the film market/Doc corner. In addition, I attended the European Arab Documentary Film Convention in Leipzig to show a "rough cut" (a first montage of the film) to film professionals. We also had the chance to show the roughcut at the Cinéma du Réel festival in Paris: Work in Progress, where only 5 projects had the privilege to be shown to professionals this year. Finally, I went to Egypt to take part in a roughcut workshop organized by the International Women's Film Festival in Cairo. Good news, the roughcut received the workshop’s first prize!</p><p>We will resume editing the film to perfect the structure and narration next November. It is still far, but this is the hard law of finding funding to make films. We will then work on the sound mixing and the color correction of the film. These are the last steps in this film project which at the end of this process will be a film..in early 2019!</p><p>If you are in Paris, I invite you on July 4 to La Colonie , a space created by the Franco-Algerian artist Kader Attia. I will show a sequence of my film and talk about the long process of making this film!</p><p>I hope to see you all soon !</p>
It has been a while since I last wrote to you and I apologize for not giving you news earlier. However, I wanted to send you good news, and only good news.</p><p>Therefore, I am writing you now to announce some wonderful news: The project received the first prize for historical film projects at a great history festival in France (Les rendez-vous de l'histoire de Blois)!</p><p>I am very happy to report this news, because this project which will become a film soon has encountered many obstacles.</p><p>Five years ago, when I began to dig into my father's forgetful memory, his village, and symbolically a whole country, Algeria, I couldn't have imagined it would be that difficult.</p><p>But, I did not give up because I had already dreamed this film.</p><p>I say dreaming because a dream must always underpin a film. A strong, powerful dream that imposes itself.</p><p>Otherwise, I think it's better not to start.</p><p>Of course afterwards, when I began to dig, to explore, and to form the stories I imposed this dream on myself. I have never let it go, even when I was told that this chapter of French-Algerian history is past, and must now be forgotten and lost to oblivion.</p><p>But how could I have stopped when, in reality, this project contains two dreams. My dream and that of my father, who is also a filmmaker. He has also long dreamed of telling his story and wrote a script which he gave to me and that I developed.</p><p>Despite setbacks in making the film, rest assured that I have not been idle since I last wrote to you. I have published a three-part investigation on Lafarge's operations in Syria in the newspaper Le Monde, which has received the TRACE Prize for Investigative Journalism. "Why does she share this news?", you may ask.</p><p>Well, I believe it is easier to convince funders to invest in your film when you have made quality work elsewhere.</p><p>In sum, I believe that the prize I have won and the extra exposure and funds my journalism work has generated will complement the hard work that has already been done on the project. Further, I look forward to presenting it to you in the coming months!</p><p>Thanks to you and my latest support (among them AFRICADOC network and IDFA Academy in Amsterdam),</p><p>Best wishes,</p><p>Dorothée</p>
Health, happiness, love and creativity.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Here is good news for El-Rihla!</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> El-Rihla was awarded the grant &quot;Draft of a cinematic dream&quot; (SCAM) that rewards the written quality of the film project.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> We will start the shooting of the film in France in February 2015. We plan to shoot the second part of the film in Algeria in September / October 2015.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Best wishes,</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Doroth&eacute;e</p>

On me l&#39;a souvent r&eacute;p&eacute;t&eacute;. Apr&egrave;s cela, nous pourrons envoyer de nouveaux dossiers pour solliciter des financements - financements que nous esp&eacute;rons obtenir pour organiser le tournage en novembre.</div> <div class="im" style="font-size: 13.333333969116211px;"> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Un travail de longue haleine qui s&#39;av&egrave;re chaque jour encore plus passionnant.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Tr&egrave;s cordialement,</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Doroth&eacute;e</div> </div> </div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> .....................................</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Dear all,</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> It&#39;s been a long since I shared news from the project with you.</div> <div> I try to do so as often as possible and always to announce good news.&nbsp;</div> <div> Be certain of one thing, the project advances and inhabits me every day.&nbsp;</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Good news!&nbsp;</div> <div> We found an independent co-producer in Algeria. His name is Yacine Bouaziz, founder and producer of Thala films. He has produced documentaries and short films that have earned in 2011 and 2012 the award for best producer in the Arab world at International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi.&nbsp;</div> </div> </div> <div> You can see for yourself on You tube one of their productions, &quot;Tomorrow Algiers&quot; which received several awards in &nbsp;festivals:<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlsfcRad5qQ" style="color: rgb(17, 85, 204);" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?<wbr />v=AlsfcRad5qQ</a></div> <div class="im" style="color: rgb(80, 0, 80);"> <div> With Thala films (Algeria), we applied for funding at the Doha Film Institute and will apply to SANAD in Abu Dhabi</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Good news!&nbsp;</div> <div> I have found the chief operator of El Rihla. His name is Simon Gillard. He recently graduated from INSAS film school in Brussels. I met him at a festival of short films in Paris. I was very sensitive to his view of the world. His first film, Anima, was selected in several festivals and received the award &quot;Filmer &agrave; Tout Prix.&quot;</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Good news!&nbsp;</div> <div> The Embassy of France in Algeria gave me support to do a film training in September and October in Corsica. This training in creative documentary film is intended for young filmmakers from around the&nbsp;<span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(84, 84, 84); line-height: 12.133334159851074px;">Mediterranean&nbsp;</span>sea. At the end of this training, I will be able to present a short film to film festivals. This&nbsp;training and realization of this short film will help me to get funding for my film project.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Good news!&nbsp;</div> </div> <div> Several commission members have echoed that they love the project and are supportive of it. Everyone agreed that the project was very promising and the stakes of the film were well laid. However, they considered the script a bit too abstract. So I started rewriting the project, this time with a scriptwriter, Marc Wels. We rethought part of the script, its pace, the introduction and evolution of some of the characters, the use of archival documents and images. &nbsp; It has often been repeated to me: the most important thing is for the treatment of the subject itself to be profound and creative.</div> <div> I have worked for a month with Marc Wels. The script is almost finalized. I will meet Sonia Feltesse, the French producer of my project on Tuesday. She has already read a portion of the script and said it was very beautiful.&nbsp;</div> <div class="yj6qo ajU" style="cursor: pointer; outline: none; padding: 10px 0px; width: 22px;"> <div aria-label="Hide expanded content" class="ajR" data-tooltip="Hide expanded content" id=":1ns" role="button" style="border: 1px solid rgb(221, 221, 221); clear: both; line-height: 6px; outline: none; position: relative; width: 20px; background-color: rgb(241, 241, 241);" tabindex="0"> <img class="ajT" src="https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif" style="height: 8px; opacity: 0.3; width: 20px; background: url(https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/ellipsis.png) no-repeat;" /></div> </div> <div class="im adL" style="color: rgb(80, 0, 80);"> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> With that, we will apply and hope to get more funding to start the shooting in November.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> A long process that turns even more exciting each day.&nbsp;</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Sincerely,&nbsp;</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Doroth&eacute;e</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> </div> </div> <div class="adL"> &nbsp;</div> </div> <p> &nbsp;</p>

Que 2014 le voit na&icirc;tre, voil&agrave; mon souhait !</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Bien &agrave; vous tous,</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Doroth&eacute;e</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> ...................</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <div> <p> Dear all,</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> I wish you a happy new year 2014! May it bring you joy, serenity and strength and desire in the realization of your projects.</p> </div> <p> I write with some news about El-Rihla. I visited Algeria in November 2013. After discussions and attempts to negotiate a coproduction agreement between France and Algeria, I realized with great regret that it was not possible within the framework of the 50th anniversary of independence. I decided to submit the project to the Development Fund for Technical Art and Industry in Algeria. Within this framework, the co-production will be legally possible.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> I then went to Mansura to record the stories of the oldest witnesses. The week that I spent shooting and recording stories was very enriching and productive for the project&#39;s development. Back in France, I started rewriting my project to submit it to other funding opportunities in France and Europe. Good news on the fundraising side: the project was pre-selected by the SCAM and the Fondation de France for writing and development aid. Furthermore, the producer Sonia Feltesse from Tamam films, with whom I wanted to work with since the beginning of this adventure, has agreed to come along. I am now very well positioned to complete this project. That 2014 sees its birth - that&#39;s my hope!</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Best wishes,</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Doroth&eacute;e</p>

It&#39;s been a long time since I&rsquo;ve sent news about the film project.<br /> Some of you may have lost patience. I could have written to you a<br /> month ago to inform you that El-Rihla had been preselected by the<br /> National Center of Cinematography (CNC) in Paris. This preselection by<br /> the CNC already proved that the project was of great quality, some<br /> insisted. I could have told you, but I thought that it was wiser to<br /> wait for the decision of the jury, before which I defended my project<br /> on October 10. And great news! El- Rihla received an aid for<br /> development by CNC!<br /> <br /> This support will allow me to work with a graphic designer to develop<br /> the graphic identity of the animated part of the film. I met with<br /> several illustrators in September, and one of them in particular has<br /> caught my attention &ndash; Vladimir Manouvia Kouka. You can find his work<br /> on the following website:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.vladimirmavouniakouka.com/" style="color: rgb(17, 85, 204); " target="_blank">www.vladimirmavouniakouka.com</a>&nbsp;Once the<br /> graphic part of the film is further developed, we will request more<br /> funding for production. Undoubtedly, this funding by the CNC &ndash; a<br /> prestigious and recognized institution in the world of cinema &ndash; will<br /> allow me to get funding more easily.<br /> <br /> Know that I will travel to Algeria in November with this new weapon in<br /> hand to negotiate a co-production agreement with the Ministry of<br /> Culture, which also granted me funding. I will take this opportunity<br /> to shoot some images in Mansoura for fear that some of the witnesses<br /> may leave us before we gather all of the necessary funding. This<br /> success is thanks to you, and your amazing support that I mentioned<br /> several times before the jury of the CNC!<br /> <br /> Best wishes,<br /> <br /> Doroth&eacute;e</p>
At last) here are some updates of my film project !</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> I finished writing my film project in French and English! Shooting in France and Algeria, archival footage, animated film sequences, music.&nbsp; The budget of the film that my producer wants to show to audiences,&nbsp;was estimated at 300,000 euros. So we need to ask for funding in France, Europe and the Middle East to raise all the money needed for this project. We have already applied for funding at the National Center of Cinematography and the Moving Image in France and Sanad, the&nbsp;Development and Post-Production&nbsp;<em style="font-style: normal; color: inherit; ">Fund</em>&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<em style="font-style: normal; color: inherit; ">Abu Dhabi Film</em>&nbsp;Festival. We should hear back from our applications in September. The fact that my film project has received such support on kiss kiss bank bank should help me get more funding.&nbsp;Thank you again for your confidence in me and your&nbsp;support for this project.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> I plan to travel to Algeria in September to begin shooting some footage (some witnesses are very old and I don&#39;t want to take the risk to wait more). I&#39;ll take this opportunity to meet with people at the Algerian Centre of Cinematography and the Ministry of Culture, that gave me funding for the 50th anniversary of the Algerian independence. I hope that negotiations for a co-production with my French producer will bear fruit!</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> The fight continues and my determination does not wane !</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Feel free to write me to ask news about the film project or&nbsp;with any suggestions regarding other avenues of funding.</div> </div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Best wishes,</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Doroth&eacute;e</div> <div> &nbsp;</div>
Here is some news about the film project El-Rihla that you had the generosity and the desire to support.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> I have finished rewriting the film project with more cinematic language, under the kind eyes of a scriptwriter and an experienced producer, who has produced films of the great filmmaker Chris Marker.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> I have decided to work with Yves Billon, a French producer, who is very experienced and really fell for the project. Yves Billon has produced documentary films of Ren&eacute; Vautier, director of the&nbsp;film &quot; To be 20 in the Aur&egrave;s&quot; a l<span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); line-height: 16px; ">aureate of the International Critics&nbsp;<em style="font-style: normal; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">Award in Cannes in 1972</em></span>. You can find the catalog of the documentary films that he recently produced by clicking on the following link:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.zaradoc.com/en/" style="color: rgb(17, 85, 204); " target="_blank">http://www.zaradoc.com/en/</a></div> <div class="im" style="color: rgb(80, 0, 80); "> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> With Yves Billon, we are trying to negotiate a co-production agreement with Algeria, where my film project has been selected and should be funded as part of the 50th anniversary of independence. We also have decided to apply for a grant to&nbsp;<span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); line-height: 16px; ">the&nbsp;<em style="font-style: normal; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">National Center</em>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<em style="font-style: normal; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); ">Cinematography</em>&nbsp;and the Moving Image&nbsp;</span>(CNC) in Paris. We hope that the project will attract the attention of the members of the Committee.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> </div> <div> In the opinion of many professionals in the film industry, my lack of experience in documentary&nbsp;film-making&nbsp;might be seen as a handicap for funders. So I decided to do a training at Ateliers Varan, where my application was accepted with great enthusiasm (<a href="http://www.ateliersvaran.com/" style="color: rgb(17, 85, 204); " target="_blank">http://www.ateliersvaran.com/</a><wbr />).&nbsp;</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> So for now, the filming is postponed, but for the best because many people think that this film project has high quality potential and deserves to be done in a professional manner instead of cobbled together.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Best regards to you all,</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Doroth&eacute;e</div>

I wish you all a happy new year 2013. I hope this year will take you, as the pontoon on the image, to the end of your dreams.</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> What about my dream? I&#39;m almost finished rewriting my film project with a professional writer who worked on the film &quot;Today&quot; by Alain Gomis (Berlin 2012 Official Selection, Milan Film Festival Award), I met a producer in France who was very interested in my film project and I am waiting to hear from Algeria for funds and permission for filming - difficult but essential step in my project. I hope that the speech&nbsp;of Fran&ccedil;ois Hollande during his visit to Algiers will help me in making this film on the history of France and Algeria !</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> </div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Best wishes,</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> Doroth&eacute;e</div> <div> &nbsp;</div> <div> &nbsp;</div>
</p> <p>  </p> <p> Dorothée    </p> <p>  </p> <p> ..........  </p> <p>  </p> <p> Dear all,  </p> <p>  </p> <p> Thank you for your wonderful support and the confidence you have given me! Do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in hearing more details. I promise to respond to each of you.  </p> <p>  </p> <p> First news: I have been meeting with film professionals in Paris over the last two months. A number of them noted the quality, sincerity and ambition of my project, but felt at this stage that its narrative and cinematic form need to be further developed. I therefore have begun to work on rewriting the script in anticipation of beginning shooting sometime in the next six months.   </p> <p>  </p> <p> A lot of work is awaiting me and I am glad that you all will come along with me in this adventure!  </p> <p>  </p> <p> Dorothée  </p> <p>  </p>

A big thank you to the 115 contributors of El-Rihla film project !</p> <p> Kiss kiss bank bank advisors told me I should reach 50 % of my goal by October 3rd. If not, it will be hard to reach my total target (15 000 euros) by the end of my fundraising campaign. So help me reach that 50% mark by October 3rd ! Do what you can please to help spread the word ! </p> <p> Let me introduce to you Palestinian oud and qanoun player, Huda Asfour. She will compose the soundtrack of the film. I met her in Washington D.C. and was immediately amazed by the quality and originality of her work. <strong>She imbues her music with a sense of melancholy inspired by her own experience of dislocation and dispossession</strong>. You can listen to her work by clicking on the following link:</p> <p> <a href="http://www.hudaasfour.com/Home.html" target="_blank">http://www.hudaasfour.com/Home.html</a></p> <p> Artists like Huda have made this project possible, and a truly eclectic piece of work. Please contribute, not only, to support the film, but all of the amazing pieces and people that will make its creation possible. </p> <p> To watch again the trailer, click on the following link:</p> <p> <a href="http://www.kisskissbankbank.com/el-rihla-le-voyage" target="_blank">http://www.kisskissbankbank.com/el-rihla-le-voyage</a></p> <p> To follow the story of this film on Facebook, click on the following link:</p> <p> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ElRihla" target="_blank">https://www.facebook.com/ElRihla</a></p> <p> Best wishes to you all and thank you again for your much appreciated support !</p> <p> Dorothée</p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p> <p>  </p>
Thanks to you all kiss bankers of El-Rihla film project ! We still have 47 days to gather the funds necessary to make this film-dream come true ! Thank you for your help !</p>
