A Swiss NGO, an university of applied sciences and Malagasy artisans combine theirs competences in order to build 4 small hydroelectric plants.

Figure 1: The electricity provides much more than light source. For example, it allows students to study after the daylight.

Building low-cost hydraulic energy for the developping countries is possible ! A Swiss-based NGO – CEAS– and a team of the university of Applied Sciences in Fribourg set theirself this ambitious challenge.

In Madagascar, only 5% of habitants have access to the national electric network, which impacts the social and economic development. Therefore, the CEAS has invested a lot to develop local capacities and competences for renewable energy production since 20XX. In 2015, we builded a low-cost wind turbine thanks to our Kiss Bankers. We hope that tomorrow the Malagasy people will be able to exploit the power of their hydraulic resources. Small hydroelectric plants will be adapted to low head (approximately 3 meters high) to produce until 3 kW.

Swiss NGO, CEAS, is cooperating with an university of Applied Sciences well-know for its hydraulic, mechanical and electrical competences. Under the supervision of three professors, Nicolas El-Hayek, a young engineer, is closed to finish the first prototype of a small hydroelectric plant. It would be simple, strong and affordable. In the middle of November, he is flying to Madagascar, where he is going to collaborate with local workshop, Tsiky. Together, they are going to build this first prototype and to start three other plants 100% made in Madagascar ! Those would be built in villages, which do not have access to national electricity network.

At the same time, the manufacturing process would be published on an open-source plateform, lowtech lab. This ways everyone would have access this technology !

This project would improve the life conditions of Malgasy families at various level with electrification.

Together, let’s make the red island a new land of hydraulic energy.

Figure 5: Madagascar map with the strategic points

The first prototype are going to be built in the district of Amboniriana. Allocation of funds

The R&D stage consists of adapting the plan and realizing a model of hydroelectric plant, which would fit with the local needs and produce between 1 to 3 kW.

Moreover, a considerable work would be to find the suitable materials in Madagascar. The plant should be retractable in case of hurricanes. The first prototype is estimated around 3‘000 € of course more expensive than the standardized version.

Besides, we will emphasize the formation of Malagasy apprentices and Malagasy workers. It represents a considerable added value for them and their families. Finally, it will assure that the plants could be built and maintained locally.

In Madagascar, there are multiple villages that could benefit from hydroelectric plants

HEIA-FR University of Applied Sciences Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg. In this project, two specific institutes are involved ENERGY and SiSo. We would like to extend a special note of gratitude to Dr. Niederhäuser (director of the faculty Energy HEIA-FR), Dr. Donato (director of the institute of sustainable engineering system HEIA-FR), Dr. Bourquin (Professor HEIA-FR, mechanical design), and Dr. Rozetta (Professor HEIA-FR, electrical engineering), as well as Nicolas El Hayek (Collaborator HEIA-FR hydraulic ernergy) for their deep involvement as well as their students.

PATMad - Malagasy association of technical support to producers and agro-transformers in Madagascar. Since 1999, PATMad has been actif implementation of project destinated to the economic development in the rural area.
