Tandem Initiative

Tandem is a university club that provides tutoring sessions to middle school Ghanaian students. Our approach is very simple: every Ghanaian student works hand in glove with a unique student from the University of British of Columbia (UBC), on a weekly basis. The tutorial is conducted online using video-calling softwares and devices.

How was Tandem created?

The Tandem initiative is born from the joint work of students from the University of British-Columbia in Vancouver and from Sciences Po in Paris. In early 2014, we wondered how to provide a long term and efficient help to Junior high school students located in a different part of the world.

The only things we had and could transmit were the knowledge and critical thinking we acquired from our education at university. Then, we decided to create Tandem: a one-to-one educational relationship between a student from a world leading university and a Junior high school pupil in need of tutoring.

The Project: the last steps.

We have already started collaborating with a school and an NGO based in Ho, in the Volta region. Our project will start with six students.

We have sent 4 computers and video-calling devices to our contacts on the field. We still need to provide our Ghanaian students an access to the Internet and two extra computers. This task is easily achievable, through 3G subscriptions for instance, but we lack financing. This is where you intervene: donate to the Tandem project, and help the Tandem students succeed.

Our students in Ghana are highly motivated and ready to start the program as soon as possible !

Look at Gideon's profile, one of our students:

" My name is Gideon Sofi, the first born of my parents Mr and Mrs Sofi, both Ghanaians. I am a boy of 13 years old. I attend Mawuli primary school and now going to Junior High School one. My best subjects are Science, Maths and English. I am dark in complexion and I am about 1.4 metres. Allocation of funds

€600 - Financing annual access to the internet (3G subscriptions) for each student.

€250 - Buying two extra used computers equipped with webcams

€150 - Shipping computers and video-calling devices to Ghana

€1000 is the mininum amount necessary in order to launch the project and help efficiently our students.

Additional donations will enable Tandem to develop, as we already plan to duplicate Tandem in a French-speaking country in fall 2015!

A great thank you for your interest, your involvement, and your donations!
