Un professeur pour les enfants syriens réfugiés au Liban

My name is Thomas, and I am 19 years old. After spending a month last summer in the refugee camp on the island of Chios, Greece, I wanted to continue my commitment to refugees in third countries. Thus, this summer, I leave 7 weeks to help the Salam LADC association, which helps Syrian refugees in eastern Lebanon. I will join a team of about twenty volunteers who provide various education projects for Syrian children as well as the distribution of indispensable material humanitarian aid in the region. At the same time, I invite you to participate in this fundraising to help set up one of the projects that the association is putting in place: hire a local teacher for refugee children!

The situation for Syrian refugees in Lebanon

Lebanon has always been confronted with the arrival of refugees. Since 1947, many Palestinians have come to seek refuge in the various camps of the country. But a few years ago, this crisis has changed scale. The beginning of the war in Syria in 2011 pushed millions of people on the roads of exile. If some people have chosen to reach Europe, the vast majority of them hope to return to Syria eventually and have won Jordan, Turkey or Lebanon. The result of these movements of population is without appeal: because the arrival of 1.5 million Syrians, 1/3 of the population of the country is now. Lebanon is the country which, compared to the original population, hosts the highest number of refugees in the world.

Most of the refugees live in the Bekaa Valley, east of Beirut. They live in small camps scattered in Lebanese villages. The action of an association like Salam LADC is to provide help to these often particularly vulnerable populations.

 

 

Created in 2006 after the Israeli-Lebanese conflict, Salam LADC's mission is to assist vulnerable populations living in the country. In fact, in recent years this aid has turned to refugees. Throughout the year, about twenty volunteers take turns to carry out various educational and humanitarian actions in the Bekaa Valley.

 

 

Access of Syrian children to school in Lebanon

In Lebanon, children from refugee families have the right to go to public schools for free. But because of the war, they often spent several years without attending classes. As a result, they face great difficulties when they arrive in their new classes, and few of them manage to stay there in the long term. Moreover, in Syria the school is in Arabic. In Lebanon, most courses are often given in English or French. Even the most comfortable children find it difficult to understand the different teaching aids in a language they do not understand. Before entering Lebanese schools, children must pass an English comprehension test. The percentage of failures in the Bekaa Valley is over 70%.

 

 

How does Salam LADC help these children?

In recent years, Salam volunteers have been able to provide classes for two classes of 15-20 students. The majority of students are between 6 and 10 years old. The purpose of these courses is to prepare children for entrance tests into the Lebanese public education system.

The volunteers saw the children progress throughout the program. At a level where they could not tell the difference between the letters of the alphabet, some children have gone to a stage where they are able to read and write in English! Thanks to the efforts of the association, most of the children of the camp managed to enter a public school.

 

 

What is the persistent problem?

The original postulate was that once the children had progressed in English and gained self-confidence in the use of that language, they would get by and the association would have to do evening classes, and prepare new students every year to integrate schools in the region.

 

 

But it became apparent that even in the classroom, children were late and could not reach their full potential. Teachers in Lebanese public schools are overwhelmed and can not afford to personally support Syrian refugee children.

 

Which solution ?

The idea now is to hire a Lebanese teacher who can accompany children along their educational path in Lebanon, in a country that is foreign to them and unknown. There is a real need to have someone who understands the codes of the local education system, to accompany children in complementarity of the courses they receive at school. The school taking place in the afternoon in Lebanon, the idea would be to set up these classes of support in the morning.

So far, volunteers have been enough because many of them have experience in pedagogy. But now it's time to give kids the more focused help they deserve. For this, volunteers will not be enough.

 

Allocation of funds

What are the needs ? What will your donations be used for?

The association owns a building to teach classes, and faces overmotivated and eager to learn (this is the main!). Now, funds are needed to engage the teacher, and for the daily needs of a class of young children.

The program will be put in place if funds are collected for a minimum of 6 months. But on my scale, I suggest you set a goal for the collection that corresponds to a month of expenses. This sum will be joined to other collections to reach the bar of 6 months. We need 900 euros:

- The average salary for a full-time professor in Lebanon: 600 euros / month.

- Teaching materials for children (paper in ink to print worksheets, pens and markers, games, art materials: 300 euros / month.

 

 

Using your donations 100% towards this project

I'm leaving 7 weeks in Lebanon to work alongside the Salam LADC association on this project as well as on other education projects. But your donations will not be used to finance my stay, that I fully fund myself. This gives the guarantee that 100% of the sum you give will go directly to the realization of the project.

 

If, fortunately, we managed to exceed the amount originally planned, it would fund not one month of activity for the teacher but two, three, or even four months! The project will only be launched if several donors collect together the equivalent of 6 months salary for the teacher. Together, we can try to participate widely in this goal!
