In March 2013, Lisa Klemenz and Leslie Villiaume went to Cairo to shoot their documentary Graffiti Baladi. Their aim was to meet some people among those who did the revolution in Egypt. The original approach they choose is exploring the demands and the pains of the Egyptian people who went to the streets through the street art. Their journey was punctuated by different striking meetings, which were staged in their movie. But very quickly, the idea of making a book arose: the authors would be two Egyptian revolution female characters, Heba Mahfouz and Rana Hassanein, and a male photographer, Beshoy Fayez, who knew since the beginning how to catch the works which have been progressively occupying the walls of the Egyptian cities: many people risked their lives to express these heart and spirit demonstrations, this political and short-lived art. Heba, Rana and Beshoy belong to this young Egyptian generation who does not want to have both their future and their revolution taken. This is this book, their book, we offer to you today. And this book needs all your support to exist, in order the words not to be erased like the revolts blood or the graffiti on the walls are too easily erased too.

THE BOOK

A tribute to the graffiti artists of the Egyptian revolution.

« The graffiti are like a mute shout. » (Omar Fathi, graffiti artist, alias Picasso)

The unsteady situation known by Egypt since 2011 has produced a popular speaking: the youth raised to shout its annoyance and its revolt against injustice and corruption. Silent and peaceful, street art is here an artistic and political expression. The walls are decorated by involved frescos and by revolution martyrs portraits with frozen smiles.

On the walls of Cairo, graffiti are short-lived. Annoying the Egyptian authorities because of their spontaneity and their imagination, they are quickly erased. This book makes durable those times of revolt and it is a poignant account of the Arabic revolutions too. It is also the prolongation and the extension of a documentary, with an inserted DVD with the book; this film was shot in mars 2013 in the streets of Cairo, while the marches were in full swing.

Sommaire

Introduction et mise en contexte historique.

Environ 150 photographies

128 pages

Format à l'italienne (24 × 16 cm)

ISBN 978-2-916097-60-2

Table of contents

Introduction and historical summary.

Portfolio into three parts (photos by Beshoy Fayez with texts by Heba Mahfouz and Rana Hassanein): The 2011 Revolution ; the Supreme Council or the Army Forces ; the Islamists.

Epilog and DVD.

Technical form of the book

Softback, colour

About 150 pictures

128 pages

Size : 24 x 16 cm

ISBN 978-2-916097-60-2

 http://rchaotic.wordpress.com/

Authors’ introduction

Beshoy Fayez is a young Egyptian photographer. Since 2010, he immortalized the protest movements gone through the country. Demonstrations, artistic performances, graffiti… He dedicates his art to each led action and takes care of hatching the current commitment, artistic or not, of the Egyptian people. His pictures were exhibited many times in Egypt and abroad, and he is the founder of the “Infinity Photography” group, where he voluntarily teaches photography. He also work at the Goethe Institute in Cairo, where he organizes cultural events such as workshops, exhibitions, screenings and debates… All are great exchanging moments.

Heba Farouk Mahfouz is a young Egyptian journalist and activist. She takes part in the revolution of the January 25th, and she was a witness of the different transition periods suffered by the country during these last three years. Today, somewhat disenchanting, she writes her pains, her anger, keeping on demanding the protested rights during the 25th of January : “Bread, Freedom and Social Justice”.

http://hebafaroukmahfouz.blogspot.fr

Rana Al-Hassanein is a young revolutionary with a cutting gift for writing. Daughter of an Egyptian writer, she takes to heart paying tribute to her father and she keeps on the way traced by him. Rana is a crusaded person, on many fronts, as well as politically than personally. She does not hesitate to express herself and she often does not care about politically correct. She breaks the clichés about the Egyptian woman or about religion in countries, mostly Muslim. Lately, she won a writing competition, started up by an American NGO. Both her look and her style are complementary with Heba’s, so we can make both a parallel and a contrast between two points of view.

 http://rchaotic.wordpress.com/

LE FILM (DVD offert avec le livre)

Synopsis

Fiche Technique

Réalisation : Lisa Klemenz & Leslie Villiaume

Image & Son : Leslie Villiaume

THE FILM (DVD included with the book)

Synopsis

Graffiti Baladi offers a look at the revolutionary street art in Egypt. Since the “Nile Revolution” in January 2011, graffiti has been strongly developing, becoming the expression of discontentment, of demand, of rage. It offers a true narration with a political content. It redraws the different events which had affected the revolution and raises against the lies of the media. Back in France, the two young filmmakers are happy to be able to be the voice of the people who chose commitment instead of apathy. They also want to pay tribute to the people who lost their lives in the name of freedom, to these persons who are now drawn as martyrs on the walls of Cairo.

Technical Form

Film making: Lisa Klemenz & Leslie Villiaume

Cinematography & Sound: Leslie Villiaume

Editing: Aurélie Cotard

Duration: 52 min + DVD bonus

The filmmakers and the book coordinators

Lisa Klemenz is a young visual artist and film director. Passionate by the 7th Art, she is graduated in animation movies. During her studies, she made her first short film with glass modeling clay, Les Etrangers de ta vie (The Strangers of your life). This film is a personal project about Alzheimer disease. It was selected in several festivals and won two prices. It is also screened during events related to the Alzheimer disease, such as the Gérotonpôle Congress in Nantes. It is used by psychologists in order to help the affected families. In 2012, Lisa went to Egypt, this country she has been loving and forging a bond for five years. Spontaneously, during the 18 days of the revolution in January 2011, she made some animations for her revolutionary friends, in order to show them her support. During two stays (November 2011 and February-April 2012), she made some introduction workshops to stop-motion technics in Alexandria and for the Animation Cinema Global Day, and later during the International African Film Festival in Louqsor.

Leslie Villiaume is a young film director, member of the French Directors Guild, of the CST (Cinematograpphy and Sound Technical Commission) and of UniFrance. After scientific studies and a pass through at the School of the Louvre (Art History), Leslie is now writing a thesis in History of Sciences at the University of La Sorbonne. Her subject is about History of Magic, which is not so surprising because Leslie is a magician too; tiny anecdote, her magician skills are sometimes useful: indeed, swap a full memory card for an empty one can be very useful in case of rushes seizing, in particular in a country where shooting during public marches became forbidden. His first fictional short film, Dixit, shot in 2012, was had several selections in more than about fifteen festivals, in France and abroad. By the way, it is during a film festival in November 2012 that Lisa and Leslie met. Lisa immediately explained to Leslie her passion for Egypt. Very interested in documentaries and always ready to travel and make new discoveries, Leslie did not hesitate a single split second and decided to leave with Lisa for Egypt…
