Vox Populi Field Works Vol. 1

ALL ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Vox Populi Field Works Vol.1 is an ethno-musical journey, the first of many planned travels from the Vox Populi Records crew. This eight day mission will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Our goal is to produce a double LP compilation, featuring a selection of amazing music from a few of Istanbul’s talented local artists.

The first part of the record will be comprised of four electronic tracks from various Vox Populi artists, created using samples from the recording sessions.

The second will consist of authentic Turkish music. From three live recording sessions, the crew will sit together and edit the golden takes, producing four songs.

We will also be video-documenting our travels with hopes of explaining the ethnographic, cultural, and historical contexts of Istanbul's musical soundscape.

The footage taken will be a compilation of the live studio sessions, the daily lives of the crew, interviews with the recording artists as well as promoters, and of course the parties! At the end of it all we will release a short video clip.

The primary aim is to finish producing and publishing the vinyl and digital files in order to release it in the spring of 2015.

Vox Populi label founder Frédéric Scharf longed for a way to combine his two passions of music and anthropology into one. The project was inspired by his move back to Berlin, a contemporary multicultural metropolis, and home to the largest Turkish population outside of Turkey.

Thanks to its unique role as a cultural bridge between Europe and Asia, Turkey and more specifically, Istanbul, its largest city, has historically served as an epicenter for the development and fusion of a diverse range of musical styles.

WHERE

Taking influence from Arabic, Byzantine, Greek, Ottoman, Persian, and Balkan cultures, and combining the result with more western European and American influences, contemporary Turkish music is imbued with a truly singular sound, effectively linking the previously distant styles of traditional and modern music.

Vox Populi Field Works Vol.1 is birthed with the intention of expanding the already rich sound of Turkish music by introducing more modern electronic elements.

Using samples taken from the recordings sessions and from field recordings of ambient noise, four Vox Populi artists will produce four different compositions that comprise the first part of the LP.

We shall embark on an anthropological journey through sound and wish for you to join us as we traverse the globe seeking authentic expressions of musical passion and celebration.

This would be a dream come true for us, but to make it happen we need your help! Please get involved in whichever way you can, if you can’t donate you can help support us to ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ our page. Every step brings us closer to our goal and your support will be greatly appreciated!

MEET US

Who are the people behind the project?

Frederic Scharf | Anthropologist & Label Founder

Fred studied anthropology at the University Lumière Lyon 2 in France and finished his degree in University São Paulo in Brazil.
