"These photographers do not face the world, they are in the world. They do not respectfully keep their distance or abide by the rules. They shake up documentary conventions with images that retranscribe their subjective expression. Their relationship with what is real and with photoshooting is physical, harsh, and instantaneous. As subversives, they blow conventions to pieces. Their photography transcends any objective grasp of what is real. Tight framed, blurred or wide angled, their moving, incandescent and nervous images act like scars. They are proof of nothing more than their proximity to a world that at times goes over the top. They raise more questions than they provide answers. Being haunting and furtive, they conjure up more than they describe, and they condense in pulsing ebb and flows, convulsive, fragmented or patchy visions of noticeable intensity. Their emotional load stems from this tension, and from the photographers’ permeability to the world, which makes those who view their images permeable to them. The EYES WILD OPEN project brings together those, who, by subverting photography, transfix us with their contagious images."

More than four years of work were needed to gather, find, arrange, put into perspective the work of nearly thirty photographers from around the world. Rare vintages, unpublished installations, projections, rare books, everything is set up to create dialogue and reveal the links that unite this broad family of photographers.

The exhibition will open in February 2018 in the prestigious Museum of Botanique in Brussels. A unique scenography is currently being worked on, entirely dedicated to the project. But there will also be an unprecedented exhibition of one of the young photographers in the Gallery, signatures of books, workshops! ...

THE BOOK, AT ANDRE FRERE EDITIONS.

It seemed to me essential to propose a book that accompanies the exhibition EYES WILD OPEN, not only to keep track of it but above all to allow us to go further. It is thanks to a series of texts and interviews conducted exclusively for this book that the project takes on an additional dimension thanks to the writing and knowledge of the many stakeholders that I met during the construction of this project.

It is André Frère, specialized in the edition of photo books, who supported me in this crazy bet. He had already collaborated with many of the photographers involved in the project, such as Antoine d'Agata, Anders Petersen, Sébastien Van Malleghem and  Arja Hyytiäinen, and it seemed natural that he should also be part of the adventure.

You will find in this catalog a large introduction of Caroline Bénichou, texts and interviews with Christian Caujolle, Diane Dufour, Jean-Kenta Gauthier, Gilou Le Gruiec, Magali Jauffret, Brigitte Ollier and Laura Serani, evoking the different periods crossed in the project, points of view on the history of photography but also on its future... Not to mention the 150 color and black & white photographs, in a new dialogue!

The book dummy, here in progress, could not have been created without the talent of Mike Derez, Robert Delpire's former assistant, and to whom we owe some of the most beautiful books of recent years. The photographers, their gallery owners, their beneficiaries, all accompanied us on this path and validated this complex and dense project.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT !

Allocation of funds

Beyond the four years of work required for the completion of the exhibition that will be launched in February 2018, this ambitious book project has required a flawless personal investment for months.

The book:

17 x 22 cm

2000 copies

240 pages Fr / Ang

Hard cover

150 photographs, black & white and color.

André Frère Editions accompany me on this project, but print and produce this book is a huge challenge. Technique first, if we think of the different photographers who compose it and whose work, its nuances, its leg, must be respected. Not to mention the fact that I fought from the beginning for the color to appear. The current dummy, alternating black backgrounds and white backgrounds, requires real expertise, both on the preparation of the final pdf, on machine tests, calibrations and printing.

A challenge too because I always wanted a bilingual book French / English, so that it is readable by the greatest number. But this too has generated costs: the increase of the number of pages, the translations.

And a financial challenge necessarily, because currently I could find only about half of the necessary budget. By supporting us and by pre-buying the book, you will simply help me to finalize the printing budget, the salary of the graphic designer, the translations, the proofreading, etc...

Printing 240 pages / 2000 copies: 18 000 euros

Graphics: 4500 euros

Translations: 1900 euros

Proofreading: 200 euros

Costs relating to images and texts (scans of prints in museums, retouches): 1500 euros

Miscellaneous expenses (transport of books, travel to the printer ...): 2000 euros.

+ 8% commission (KISSKISSBANKBANK commission 5%, 3% bank charges)

If we exceed the total amount of crowdfunding?

While I have already done everything to ensure that the final object best represents the work of the photographers, if we go beyond the objective, I could perhaps use a more noble cover material, realize a greater number of machine testing before printing and certainly increase the initial print, so that all my work undertaken in recent years can materialize in the realization of this book, I hope for February 2018.
