In Nicaragua, the association Habitat-Cité and the Casa de la Mujer (Women's House) in Granada are working together to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of Pantanal, a slum where nearly 2,000 families live.
In a country where unemployment is high, women (who often lack professional qualifications) are particularly affected by poverty.
In Pantanal, Habitat-Cité helps women build their own houses. With the support of the Casa de la Mujer, we are currently finalizing the construction of six houses using mud bricks. The inhabitants participate in the construction work and receive training on how to build their own houses using adobe.
In order to allow the members of the community to act upon their environment (habitat), to acquire know-how and access to employment, we would like to offer additional training to 15 women from Pantanal on how to build houses using adobe.
The 15 participants, supervised by a trainer from the Habitat-Cité team and constructors from the Casa de la Mujer, will construct urban furniture for a public park in the heart of the neighbourhood and/or elements such as bus stops, benches, etc...
Within the framework of this initiative, we also plan to develop a self-construction manual (focusing on the use of mud bricks, mud, plaster), with the participation of the group of women. The manual will then be shared with other people living in similar conditions in other neighbourhoods.
Finally, a photo exhibition will present the entire project in order to raise awareness on the advantages of green building, sustainable development and international solidarity ... and promote the work of women in poor neighbourhoods, struggling together to change their lives.
By supporting the women of Pantanal, you are helping them build a better future for themselves and their neighbourhood!
