Help Begat Theater perform La Disparition in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon this summer, during the prestigious Festival d'Avignon.

The project

LA DISPARITION has been selected to play at Villeneuve en Scène from July 9th to 20th 2016, during the Festival d'Avignon.

Our first reaction : YES ! Here is a great opportunity to present La Disparition to those of you who haven't seen it yet, and to the French and international festival and venue directors who didn't attend Chalon dans la Rue last year.

Our second reaction : OUCH... how are we going to pay our team ?  Let's not be ungrateful, Villeneuve en Scène offers us great conditions to perform.  To get a chance to play in Avignon's off festival, most companies have to pay for everything from renting a theater to housing their team. We are housed, fed, and supported by the festival in regards to logistics, transportation, and communication.

Still, the biggest part of our budget - the salaries - is at our own expense. In the current economical and cultural context, we don't have any reserve to finance this amount.

Third reaction : Crowdfunding, but of course !

This summer in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, LA DISPARITION will approach its 50th date, a noteworthy achievement for a show that is not easy to program and demands an true engagement from programmers.

LA DISPARITION, a solitary journey through the city.

La Disparition leads you into a story that takes place at the scale of the city itself. A secret rendez-vous sets you onto the trail of a woman who has mysteriously disappeared.

At the time of her disappearance, Carlotta Valdez was writing her latest novel. Alone and equipped with an unusual, interactive book, you walk the city streets in search of her. Here is the desk where she was last seen. And the path she seemingly followed.

To help you form an image of the author's mental state in the days leading to her disappearance, the "Agency" has carefully pieced together her last steps and gathered the fragmented notes, ideas and thoughts she left behind. We wish you safe travels into the mystery of her disappearance.

Why fund it?

For Begat Theater, performing La Disparition in Avignon is a great opportunity to reach out to mutli-disciplinary venues and festival directors and to widen our touring scope beyond street theater circuits.

Begat's work touches and inspires you ? You want the company to keep touring and creating new shows ? Help us pursue our mission and vision.

Here is our budget to go to Avignon in July :

EXPENSES 13179 €

Salaries - artistic team   9300 €

Salaries - production  2229 €

Consumable supplies and materials  250 €

Travel and per diem  900 €

Communication    230 €

Royalties   270 €

INCOME  13179 €

Grants  6000 €

Self-financing  2579 € *

KKBB   2500 €

Tickets   2100 €

Well, the self-financing amount of 2579 € comes from Begat's modest cashflow.

All contributions beyond the set objective (2500 €) will further alleviate the company's financial effort, and allow us to invest this amount in our next project instead.

The best case scenario for us would be to reach exactly 5079 € !

One more thing : the real truth is that we don't know yet the amount of the grants we will receive. Our estimate of 6000 € is realistic but cultural budgets have taken a deep blow in the last three years, and we cannot take anything for granted, until we are officially notified by french funding institutions.

Most of all, grant notifications are coming later than ever, which forces us to take a huge leap of faith and endorse a disproportionate risk. What if we only get 5000 € or even 4000 € ? Of course, we will update our KKBB page as soon as we know what amount we've been granted, hopefully by the middle of June.

Until then, please know that every euro is worth gold to us.

June 7 : launch of our crowdfunding campaign on KissKissBankBank

Mid-june : grant notifications and project update

June 4-8 : set-up and adaptation of La Disparition in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon

July 9 : PREMIERE of La Disparition at the Villeneuve en Scène festival.

July 10-20 : La Disparition continues to play every day except July 14, with individual departures every 5 minutes from 10 am to 11:30 am, and 4pm to 6:30pm.

July 20 : end of our crowdfunding campaign

July 21 : strike, and return home.

During that period, we will be meeting presenters and shmoozing as much as we can. We will also be meeting our generous co-producers and public funders (listed below). And who knows, maybe we will even have the time to see a show or two !
