In only seven months, the Taverne Gutenberg has become one of the strongest art symboles of Lyon (France). This three-story high building used to house several apartments and a bar.
Slowly deserted by its inhabitants, the Taverne finally came back to life in autumn 2015, through the initiative of interactive designer Maïa d'Aboville, and painter Henri Lamy. Together with cultural project coordinator Melina Nieto, they occupied this unique space and turned it into a creative hub in only three months.
Its history-filled walls and bedrooms are an endless source of inspiration for art-lovers of all kinds.
This supposedly ephemeral art residence was to close in December 2015. But it encountered such a huge success (inviting over 60 invited and welcoming thousands of visitors), that the team decided to continue the adventure.
February 2016 marks the beginning of a new era for the Taverne thanks to its acclaimed group exhibit "Hybrid". The building now houses artists in residence, a coworking art space and an exhibit space. The Taverne Gutenberg offers an eclectic and unique program.
AN ETHUSIASTIC TEAM DRIVEN BY THE SAME AMBITION
The Taverne can also count on a strong team of volunteers to insure that each events are well organized and in a warm atmosphere.
Several professional volunteers have also offered to give the team a helpful hand : Mr. Christian Compigne (architect), Mr. Durand from Fidextra, Mrs. Émilie Zieleskiewicz and Mr. Alexandre Naz (lawyers).
The Taverne's partners also play a part in the association's everyday life :
But most importantly, the key actors of the Taverne Gutenberg are the neighbours, visitors, artists... yourself!
Helping the Taverne Gutenberg association, means actively participating to the development of a new cultural initiative in Lyon. It aims to :
Make art accessible to all – creating an alternative option to traditional art galleries and build unique ties between the public and the artists.
Create a hybrid platform dedicated to artists – host local, national and international artists by forging partnership programs with other art residences around the world.
Initiate a new socio-cultural approach to a various audience – closely work with associations from the same neighbourhood (Guillotière).
1. AN ART RESIDENCE
The Taverne Gutenberg offers up to 10 private art studios (measuring between 7 to 17,5 sq. meters each), for a period of three months. It is more than just a rented space: we insure the promotion of the artists and the creation of a solo show to present their work.
2. GROUP EXHIBITS
At the end of each residency, the Taverne Gutenberg houses a massive group show with all the artists that are part of the program. Each rooms, walls, and staircases are transformed and filled with art. This trimestrial event is also opened to non-resident artists and is considered as one of the highlights of our program.
3. A COWORKING ART SPACE
For artists and craftsmen who are not looking to rent an art studio, we also offer a shared space on the 2nd floor. Each person can come on a daily basis and use our tools, storage areas, free coffee and tea, and wifi.
4. WORKSHOPS & OTHER CULTURAL EVENTS
We regularly create events related to inter-cultural exchanges, with an educational and artistic approach, for all types of audiences. A great deal of workshops are also organized for children, such as capoeira-painting or fabric painting.
5. A GALLERY-CAFÉ
The ground floor houses a permanent exhibit space as well as a community café, where everyone can enjoy a traditional moroccan mint tea while admiring our vintage 50's bar.
