Be a part of the adventure of the eco-hamlet « Les toits dans le vent » The roofs in the wind. Grouped accomodation : a new way of living. When

The project

Alone we go quicker, together we go further.

Imagine six environmentally-sustainable houses, built composing with elements : hill, wind and sun. Six families living in their own house but sharing their yard, their laundry room and a common house they built from their own hands to share their passions (pottery, cooking…).

Six families with small and big children : The younger ones being able to gambol on the 4500m² site without fence. An opened place to welcome friends or strangers. A place full of resources for everyone interested by this approach.

This dream is getting true thanks to the persistance and the efforts of a few people convinced by the « village life » where solidarity and sharing is important. Convinced as well of the necessity to pool (site/ground purchase, craftsmen, logistics and their efforts !) for everyone to be able to build low energy housing, environmentally friendly and using local resources (craftsmen, materials…).

Young, old, and diverse budgets.

Since October 2012, The Elevens”meet once a week to define what will be their eco-hamlet : 6 environmentally-sustainable houses with very low energy consumption for private use including one with a flat to let. And as well some community living spaces : the living room, the cellar, the gardens, the orchad and the familial workshop. Multiple decisions to make : Architecture, building style, insulation, common spaces… All choices were made together in an effort of consensus.

The hamlet is made to support exchanges as to respect any household’s privacy.

The common building permit is filed in May 2014.

Some younger, some older, diverse budgets but the same direction :

To integrate sustainable development in the hamlet’s structure and functioning with organic sourced materials from local network, local craftsmen, renewable energies, farmland’s protection, organic gardens, bike use and car sharing.

Isolation murs en chanvre (usine à 20km)

Isolation sols en balle de riz

To ease exchanges and sharing in the hamlet as with the village Romette, nearby. And in the future, to share their crafts and skills welcoming people and groups interested by this grouped housing experience.

The Genesis : Once upon a time…

Once upon a time there was a new couple. She was 50 years old and livedin a house with a small yard in the city of Gap. He was 55 years old and lived in a bright house in the mountain, made from his own hands.

She didn’t like to live in his house because of the daily 40km to drive to her workpace in Gap in all weathers. He didn’t like to live in her house, without horizons… One day he said : „What if we made our own house ?“ Architect, he was not to one house! But he didn’t want it individual. He dreamt of renewing his first experience of grouped houses 30 years ago. A pioneer!

No sooner said than done, it didn’t take them long to find a couple seduced by the architect’s enrionmentaly friendly houses, ecological, warm and comfortable. They started looking for a site, close to Gap… And from site to site they ended finding 4500m² in Romette (near Gap in the Hautes-Alpes). The group could then grow and at the end six families ended collaboratinghave collaborated : neighbours, coolleagues, friends… Eleven adults from 27 to 59 years old have got into this beautiful project, a little bit crazy or not so conscious of what awaited them… That’s how the big adventure started. Technical adventure but above all else human! The adventure of Les Toits dans le Vent“.

Why fund it?

What will the fund-raising be used for?

To realise one of the common spaces that are the familial workshops. And mainly the solar panels!

This 72m² construction is used as a „hands-on learning building site“ with the project collaborators.

During the summer of 2015, The „Elevens“, their children (big ones!) and friends dug, assembled, built the familial workshops and started the 170m² wood terrassed walls, necessary fort the future gardens.

The building is weatherproof : There is still a lot of work to do, but they are all confident!

The building ecological principles are :

Insulation with organic sourced materials (hemp and textile local production) Solar waterheater Rainwater collection bassin Respect of the natural topography

- 4500 euros: solar panels installation

> 5000 euros> Kitchen installation

> 6500 euros> Sauna installation

> 8500 euros> Interior design of 4 bedrooms

> 10000 euros> Terrace building
