Academic Art for everyone

After 10 years spent in educating myself as a professional artist and Art teacher, and after 15 years experience as an Art teacher, I find it incredibly sad that most of the people think that the Art is an elite or specialized matter. I would like to do my own school, where people will train their skills guided by me, so to enjoy Art in the most friendly and accessible way. My goal is very simple – I just would be very happy to help people to develop their own Art approach, based on knowledge and understanding over professional Academic Art. Yes, this field of knowledge is not so difficult if you know how to teach it. I think I am very clear about this process.

But let me answer some really important questions, so to clarify the meaning and the goal of this project.

1. Is the Academic Art a genre?

Nope, it’s not. Clearly :) Under the term “Academic art” we mean basis. Knowledge which was developed in the last 500 years in purpose to define rules for displaying unreal object as a real subject. It’s like studying a second language – there are alphabet, grammar and vocabulary on which the new language is based. Art is not different, it’s just a visual language of communication, but as any other language it has rules, which need to be trained as often as possible so to start “speak” this language.

  2. Is the Academic Art a professional Art?

Not necessarily. You may have Academic based training and still to not be a professional artist. The Academic art training is that part of the language, which we may call “ the craft” – those are skills and knowledge which give the basis, but the way one develops this basis is what actually makes him / her a professional artist. Many people speak English, but not everyone is Shakespeare. Yet, without this training is really difficult to become an artist on professional level, no matter how creative you are. And the reason is that every knowledge is defined by some principles which first need to be learned.

3. What means professional level in Art?

Some people say that professional is something you can earn your livings with. But that’s far of being true, because in this case we will face the fact that Van Gogh wasn’t a professional artist (according to our modern standards). In Art, professional means the ability to challenge yourself (as an artist) and to display diversity of ideas, techniques, projects, etc. Because it is all based on the Academic principles of Art. Shading, composition, perspective, etc. are the matter of any art product and it doesn’t really matter if we do a logo design, portrait, book illustration or whatever – we always use the same principles. Those principles are the subject of training in my atelier. They are general, and they apply to everything we call “Art”.

4. What’s the goal of this training?

It’s really simple – just to give people the basis. It doesn’t aim to make anyone an artist, because I am very sure that artistic (and creative) skills are very natural to each of us. This training aims to make people confident to experiment with art to challenge their creativity so to display it in a huge variety of concepts and projects. Art is what the personality can display, whereas “the craft” of the Academic art is that solid basis, on which everyone can build their own style.

5. Is the Academic atelier following the same manner of training like in a regular academy?

Yes and No. Yes, because it concerns the same subject of training, and NO, because in an academy there are way more hours planned for training and way more subjects split among different teachers. In my atelier I will reduce the time for training and will make it way more focused, so people to be able to get many things at the same time. As I am a professional teacher, I know very well how to make a syllabus and training focused. Yet, the participant should posses his/her own strong motivation to follow the curse. It will be always a matter of two participants in the educational process – the teacher and the student. If one of those two is not motivated, then the process stops.

Here I will post some examples of my own works. The reason is to display what means diversity when it comes to developing different Art projects. All those wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t have the basis of the Academic art training.

So, can you imagine what you could do after you have this training taken? Fascinating!

First: some book illustrations, where the same principles of composition, color schemes, perspective, shading, etc, work:

And then, some conceptual artworks, based on the same principles:

And then: abstract artworks, which are also based on the same principles:

I hope you really have it clear why it is so important to have this form of training.

And please, do not hesitate to post a comment – I will answer any question I see here!

Thank you… for your attention, and for your support.

I feel motivated to know that people see the meaning of my effort.

Allocation of funds

I try this project as an independent teacher. That means that I don’t fit the frame of standard educational subsidies. That’s why I need extra funding support, so to be able to pay:

1. The first 3 rents of the studio: €400

2.To buy the necessary equipment, such as

     - 5 tripods - min. € 600

    - 3 working tables - € 120

    - 6 specialized chairs - € 300

    - 2 big storage shelves - € 160

    - drawing / painting paper - € 150

    - podium and and specialized table for still-life compossitions - € 150

     - plaster and other models for drawing/painting - € 200

    - available for work materials (pencils, brusches, watercolors, acrylic paintings, ink, erasors, sharpeners, clips, type, sandpaper, boards) - € 400;
