Arts Plastic ENSAM : le recyclage du plastique en local
Who are we?
We are a group of students of the ENSAM. We are 14 engineering students in second year of the Arts et Métiers Parithech school in Châlons-en-Champagne:
- Benoît Péchenart
- Éléonore Lhoir
- Sébastien Havret
- William Monrocq
- Louis Breton
- Louis Valleix
- Damien Barbier
- Pablo Flammant
- Marie Dixneuf
- Oskar Bellaich
- Augustin Delcambre
- Coraline Le Doucen
- Léo Jan
- Joséphine Hunout
Our objective is to develop a project entering a sustainable development idea, nowadays indispensable to our society. We would like to use a professionalizing school project to establish a plastic recycling base in the Arts et Métiers center of Châlons-en-Champagne.
We chose plastic as a material to handle in this project as its recycling is a big issue in terms of environment. Indeed, the volume of plastic used every day is considerable. However, the durability of the objects in which it is used is always different: packaging, bottles, cups, etc. These perishable products do not decompose, and this causes a lot of pollution issues: amount of plastic in the sea, plastic waste in the cities, etc. A solution has to be found to treat all this waste, it would avoid loss of material and energy (production and recycling).
We truly want to develop this project because it is sustainable, useful and scientifically interesting for engineering students.
What is this project?
In a concept of trying to solve these issues, we launched a recycling project inspired by the movement “Precious Plastics”. The final objective would be to create new products with the plastic we could collect.
We want to collect all the plastic we can by contacting the town hall, shops, and people working or studying in our school, as a lot of plastic is used in the educational building but also in the student residence.
The method we found to help reducing the pollution caused by plastic is the construction of machines willing to transform the plastic collected into new products. To succeed in this project, we need to build three machines: a shredding machine, a press and an extruding machine.
In this idea of recycling, we also want to collect a maximum number of pieces helping to build these machines on products no longer used or willing to be recycled. We will build the pieces by ourselves if it is necessary. We plan on using our knowledge and technical skills to optimize this project in terms of recycling and funding.
Once the machines are built and the plastic collection is launched, we will create molds in order to create new objects with the plastic previously collected.
We will have the possibility of using these objects in various ways: giving them to charity associations or in Africa while collaborating with the 4L Trophy teams, using them for the promotion of our school, or selling them to finance other projects.
The objective is to finish the machines assembly before Christmas. As explained below, we already advanced a part of the funds in order to begin quickly.
Early 2019, will then begin the diferent tests willing to parameter the machines in an optimal way. A part of the team will in parrallel dedicate its work to the study and the realization of the aluminium molds.
Finally, before 2019 summer, the first recycled plastic made objects should be released, if we do not encounter unexpected obstacles.
Plan of action?
We have a year to achieve these objectives:
- Elaborate a project following our way of thinking
- Set up a motivated team
- Collect data about plastic in general and its recycling
- Build/Collect/Buy pieces for the construction of the machines
- Build the machines
- Collect the plastic (contacting the town hall, shops, the school, etc.)
- Elaborate molds to create new products with the plastic
- Create the final products
Currently, the researches, communication, pieces fabrication, collect, and even construction of the machines have already begun.
Another objective would be to transmit our work and ideas to the next generations of ENSAM students. This would help to keep this spirit of sustainability while improving this project to make it more efficient.
We truly want to use the capacities we acquired in our school to help sustainable development.
However, the first step is to achieve this project, and we need your help!
Waar dient de collecte voor
The money collected will finance the different machines useful to the project development:
- 300€ for the shredding machine that transforms the plastics in order to use it in the other two machines.
- 250€ for the production of the extruding machine used to create plastic coils fitting in the ENSAM 3D printers.
- 150€ for the production of the press allowing us to process the funding of plastic and the impression of plastic parts.
- 150€ for various electronic organs refining our melting temperatures, that represent an adding of our own to Precious Plastics machines.
If the amount required is exceeded, the extras will be used to establish this project at long-term range in ENSAM for the next generations of students, by realizing molds for the printing of some plastic part for example.
A bigger amount would eventually finance a business trip to Netherlands where we could meet the founders of Precious Plastics and learn with them all the details of this big concept.
As the treasurer and crowdfunding responsible, i will percieve the totality of the collect and will be in charge of its use
