cultcheers is the contraction of the words ‘culture’ and ‘cheers’, meaning ‘enjoying culture in a friendly atmosphere’. This format offers you one hour of culture close to home or directly at your place, on the topic of your choice, over a drink in a small group of people.

To do so, cultcheers recruits talents in philosophy, literature, art, sciences and history in your city. These talents pass on their passion to you through a talk, a performance or a tasting. Their event is accessible via the platform cultcheers.com, through which you can enroll and buy your ticket.

2. The idea

When she was a little girl, Chloé, the founder of cultcheers, enjoyed listening to her grandmother’s stories - who passed on her taste for literature and history, but most of all, her curiosity and eagerness to always learn more about the world.

Once she grew up and after writing a thesis about knowledge transmission in our hyperconnected societies, Chloé asked herself how she could reinforce the role of culture in daily life and encourage social interactions, by valuing all the talents around us. cultcheers was born in January 2017!

3. Why cultcheers?

cultcheers is based on personal beliefs but also on a double observation.

First of all, the amount of available information to understand the world is constantly increasing. In the meantime, communication media built to analyze and make this knowledge accessible are multiplying. How can we step back from this? We believe it is necessary to go back to the heart of it, by entering into a dialogue with talents who possess true knowledge or real experience in areas such as philosophy, literature, history, art or sciences. In return, these talents accept to see their vision of culture challenged and enriched by discussions with a motivated and curious audience.

This is the reason why cultcheers is committed to promote a ‘lively culture’. We are willing to put the human back at the heart of transmission, by connecting talents and curious minds. Culture belongs to everyone and allows people to open out by learning and creating. We are convinced that it restores meaning and social bonding, beyond generational and cultural differences.

By looking for talents, we realized how many, how diverse and how close they were: a friend passionate about mythology, an uncle who is baker or a cousin who plays music… Culture is present everywhere and in all shapes, in developing as well as experienced talents.

The second part of this observation is the necessity to build an authentic dialogue. Social relationships are gradually turning digital, altering the mere notion of sharing, while benefiting a form of communication based on immediacy. An authentic dialogue is yet what enriches and spreads culture in a simple, informal and human way. This idea is not new though. According to Platon, Socrates used to spend all his time discussing with his pupils. He probably was the very first cultcheers’ talent!

6. Transparency regarding the price of a cultcheers

As you might have guessed, we are convinced that culture will enable us to recreate social ties. To achieve that, talents must be valued by being paid. This is why cultcheers talents receive a payment of 7,50€ on the 10€ of the ticket price. It is also necessary to compensate those who select these talents for you: this is why our ambassadors receive 1,25€ and the cultcheers organization, 1,25€.

In 2017, cultcheers confronted its concept to reality by organizing 40 cultcheers in 9 cities of different sizes: Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Guerpont, Boston, Mexico, Bangkok and Hong-Kong. The results were really positive :

Since then, cultcheers is active in Amsterdam, Paris, Mexico, Hong-Kong and in the coming weeks, will also open in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille and Utrecht.
