Exhibition at the Leipzig Art Fair 2018

Hi, thanks for stopping by. This is me in the studio.

WHO AM I?

I am an artist who mostly makes paintings.

I like to think I do a thing that nobody else does. I've been doing it for more than 25 years and have had many exhibitions.

WHAT AM I DOING NOW?

Every year I make a new series of paintings. You can see the last few years work on my website: www.corneliusdelaney.com Most years I get to exhibit this new work somewhere. Sometimes to a big crowd like at the Biennale in Grenoble in 2016 and other times to an intimate gathering like at an associative café.

I am currently making some of the best work I have ever made.

It's A God Awful Small Affair, Acrylic on canvas, diptych (100cm x 160cm), 2018

This is one of my most recent paintings and an example of one that I would be taking to the Art Fair in Leipzig. The title is a line taken from David Bowie's song Life On Mars.

In this series I've been using images of Martian landscapes I found on the internet and I don't know whether I'm making pictures about Mars or Australia. I'm from Australia originally, but now that I live in France, I could actually be from Mars.

I have always loved David Bowie's music and I wanted to include him in the work somehow. That is kind of how I work. I find things and things happen and I put them together with personal stuff, memories etc., then I filter it and mix it and eventually a painting manifests. Stories emerge. Figures appear... some familiar, some not so much.

I get angry about the state of the world, anxious and sad, but in the paintings I am trying to work something out. So I'm not telling you how to think or even really what to see. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it doesn't make any sense.

Paintings don't have to make sense, they just have to be.

WHY AM I ON KISSKISSBANKBANK?

I live in quite a remote part of France these days that is a great place for making the work, but perhaps a bit far away for the crowd who actually buy paintings.

I am often doing mass emails to galleries all over Europe and the world, trying to make new connections to show my work, but emails are a bit impersonal and you don't get much response. I go to the big cities like Lyon and Marseille and walk around speaking to people in galleries who ask "Why didn't you send us an email?".

So, making the work is one thing, but getting to show it and sell it is another business entirely.

This year I have been invited to participate in the Leipzig Art Fair in Germany in November. With the collection of work I have at the moment this opportunity could give my entire enterprise the boost it needs to advance to a new level of sustainability.

And of course, more than fame or riches (2 of the 3 Buddhist curses), my goal is sustainability, that is, to be able to keep making the work.

So, here I am passing the virtual hat around. I invite you to take a look at my website at www.corneliusdelaney.com. Perhaps you could help me get my paintings to Leipzig.

Any little bit will help and I thank you with all my heart.

To participate in the Leipzig Art Fair 2018 I need €3710.

I live down in the southern part of France and Leipzig is way up the road in Germany. I will have to transport my paintings (which aren't small) and stay in Leipzig while the exhibition is on. I will be accompanied by an assistant who will share the driving and help with the installation of the paintings.

THE BUDGET

Fee for 10 square metres of installation space in the art fair: €1350 (plus €270 VAT)

Catalogue Entry: €190

Vehicle hire to transport paintings from the south of France to Leipzig: €550

Fuel: €600

Accommodation for 2 people for 5 nights in Leipzig: €250

Food (for 2 people for 6 days) and sundries: €200

Commissions, taxes, road tolls, emergencies: €300

TOTAL: €3710

I will collect the total amount of the perceived donations

If my goal is exceeded by a large amount, I will occupy a bigger installation space (20 square metres is €2,500) and exhibit more of my work. If my goal is exceeded just a bit, I will buy more canvas, paint, brushes and paper, or pay the rent for my website.
