My engagement must be their memory

2014 centinairy of the start of WW1. On the 14th juillet ; France will receive the 72 countries which took part in the conflict. Sensitive to this memory I propose my vision poetique to this War that was supposed to be the end of all wars ?

Each nation is represented on a triptych. In the centre, the nation's war memorial, on the left, the battlefield, on the right a monument or building still standing or re-built (i.e the Lakenhalle (Cloth Hall), Ypres, Belgium). On the foreground of each picture, stand soldiers in daily gestures; the legend names the places where pictures have been taken.

Depuis plusieurs années, je développe ce projet en arpentant les différents lieux de mémoire : en France, en Belgique, au Togo. Vingt triptyques ont déjà été réalisés, présentés sur cette page, représentant plusieurs nations. Il me manque encore 52 sites à photographier pour que le travail aboutisse.

POURQUOI LES STATUETTES ?

Ma femme est togolaise. Un pays que j’ai visité à de nombreuses reprises et dont j’aime la culture. Un jour, me promenant dans la rue, mon regard s’est posé sur un enfant qui tenait dans ses bras une statuette en bois. J’ai pensé qu'il jouait avec une poupée. J’interpellai ma femme à ce sujet. Elle me confia, avec solennité, que loin de n’être qu’un simple jouet, cette statuette avait une symbolique bien particulière : l’enfant portait en fait dans ses bras la représentation sculptée de son jumeau disparu. Cette image m’a frappé. La statuette évoque un lien sacré reliant le monde des morts et celui des vivants. Dès lors, ces statuettes jumelles furent le déclencheur de mon travail photographique sur la mémoire.

LES UNIFORMES

Il m’a semblé important, pour recréer l’univers des soldats dans leur contexte, de faire fabriquer leurs uniformes à l’identique, pour qu’ils soient le plus fidèle possible à l’original. J’ai sélectionné les tissus et fait confectionner les vêtements par un atelier de couture togolais.

Mon souhait serait que chacun s'approprie ce devoir de mémoire et que ma vision poétique voyage à travers le monde. Est-ce une utopie ? Grâce à vous, peut-être pas...
