High Risk Report

<p> War reporters are becoming more and more vulnerable and are becoming targets while in the field. In 2013, 75 journalists died while on the job and today over 175 reporters worldwide are still in prison. These war journalists risk their life every day to cover the news and bring it to us at home.</p> <p>  </p> <p> War journalists need more protection, but are not all provided with the same ability to protect themselves against the dangers they face. A freelance journalist may not be able to pay for bodyguards or safety material. While an embedded journalist may have some protection, they may not be 100% secure, and they face other restrictions as they have to work with the army. What are the differences in the possibilities available to the different types of journalists?</p> <p>  </p> <p> Who can help them? How much does that cost to protect a journalist for a news organization?</p> <p>  </p> <p> <strong>Our project</strong></p> <p>  </p> <p> We will first join the army for an exercise as embedded journalists for a few weeks. Through this experience, we will be able to get a glimpse of what journalists have to face during a conflict.</p> <p> Then we will meet the BBC, one the biggest news organization around the world, to learn about how they deal with the safety of their reporters. We want to learn what process and policies they implement to ensure that their employee won’t be faced with excessive amounts of danger while in the field.</p> <p>  </p> <p> At the same time, we will meet freelance reporters. They are some of the main actors of this project. They risk their lives to a higher degree, especially when covering high conflict areas such as Syria or demonstrations in Egypt.</p> <p>  </p> <p> We want to go beyond a classic video report and create an interactive and online documentary.</p> <p> We will tell you about our progress throughout the year on a blog. We will share articles, interviews, and all the information we can gather. We want to meet the war reporters who risk their lives and tell you about their stories and experiences. The more you help, the further we can investigate.</p> <p> A documentary such as this will give a new dimension to the different questions we will be addressing. But beforehand, we will create a blog to keep you posted as to our progress. I am calm and reserved in general, but I know what I want and nothing can stop me. I chose to study journalism because it forces me to surpass myself, to always learn more, and that is what I want to do throughout this project.</p> <p dir="ltr">  </p> <p> Christophe - I like the job of war reporter, covering conflicts is something that is essential to me. I want to meet the men and women who risk their lifes everyday to describe for us horrors of war. This is even more of a challenge, because these stories that can be difficult to tell. I often worry about the conditions in which they do their jobs. I will surpass myself to find the answers to my questions.</p>
