KURMÅ / First album

KURMÅ is one of those musical projects that is difficult to put in a box, and always in motion. A meeting between spiritual and intuitive music, rock, lyrical, blues… Inspired by the Kirtans, this formation of 5 musicians explores new musical spaces where musicians and the public, together, open up new horizons of freedom and creation.

After 4 years of collective experimentation and improvisation, KURMÅ has decided to go to a studio to promote its music further: recording of our very first album in February 2021!

Who’s KURMÅ?

The band was first formed by Samuel (harmonium, vocals, guitar, percussion), originally from Belgium, Gabriel (guitars, lapsteel, synthesizers), from Quebec, and Stéphane (guitars, handpan, vocals). They met each other thanks to yoga that they’ve been teaching together for a long time, and then turned this meeting into a musical collab in 2016.

They spontaneously understood each other musically and that quickly led them to compose original songs, then to host evenings of mantra chants in Lyon's yoga studios.

In 2020 the group is growing (yeah !!) and now welcomes Lou and Antoine, singer-bassist and talented percussionist.

For this album project, KURMÅ is accompanied by Michael Cobb and his cello, an international conductor who brings extra magic to our music.

This first opus is created in collaboration with a choir of twenty people from our community, led by the choir director Mariette Wilson.

And to help KURMÅ take off, Kim-Lan joined the adventure as our manager: first the album, then concerts and an upcoming tour!

From improv evenings to studio recording

This album recording project has been maturing for a year now: the goal is to rearrange the different compositions by recreating the vibratory intensity of the evenings in order to transcribe it in the studio (with a whole choir, oh my!).

Kirtans come from a moving musical tradition.

Here, the fourth wall does not exist, the audience is not the audience: it is an actor, singer, dancer, explorer. It is one with the musicians. That’s precisely where the inner flight of each one takes place, which goes from the depths of the earth towards the distant cosmic frontiers. In this exchange, this spontaneous collective creation experience, KURMÅ finds inspiration - during those improv evenings that soon became a musical and vibratory laboratory.

This musical project is therefore photographic: we want to capture this living, abundant, sensitive experience on a medium - like a photographer who captures the light emanating from his or her subjects. This project intends to show and share these open and liberating musical spaces.

In order to allow you, at home, when you want it, to live this vibrant spark.

With your precious support, we will be able to make our music shine and share even more this musical approach rooted in the care, the well-being and the opening of the heart!
