Learning From Europa
Support us in our tour accross Europe, 4 months to discover architects and designer's creative processes!
Learning From Europa
Learning From Europa is a 4 months expedition, aiming to visit about thirty design and architectural firms throughout Europe. We will travel accross twenty plus countries to meet professionals and interview them on their working processes and how they approach the project. This experience will be widely shared in order to promote creation wealth and diversity encountered in the various European countries.
We will bring you up-close to the visits of those agencies, workshops or studios. Through them we will show you how their identity was forged, how they work and grasp the future.

The idea is to bring back a picture of European Design, destined for both students and professionals of those fields. The project also aims to provide to a wider audience what is behind a project, an architecture, a commercial space or a scenography... In short, how the projects are made and which are the new practices or creative techniques in the various European countries.
We are Maïlys and Johan, two young spatial designers. We met at school, at La Martinière Diderot in Lyon, where we have adopted a taste for experimentation, and shared some all-night working sessions. A common vision of our profession and a deep commitment for Europe prompted us to undertake this exciting experience.
The idea began in early 2015, we both wanted to travel accross Europe and see what is actually going on there. But we thought that putting that in perspective with our professional fields was the most interesting question.
In fact, some European countries seem to be rarely featured in design and architecture fields. And we wanted to discover and compare the working processes and the current practices in those different countries, because each country has its own cultural, historical, economic or geographical specificities. The project approach in Greece, struggling country in Europe, is probably different from the Danish method for example (or maybe not... but it is still worth going to learn).
We thought that the best way to figure it out, was to go and see by ourselves, meeting professionals, and earing their side of it, in order to draw up a kind of panorama of European architecture and design. Through this, we also want to share our view on our professions, the vision of two young designers on Europe and Creative fields.
The interviews take place over one or two hours (or maybe more ...). We visit the studios and we question their founders in a grid of questions prepared before.
We adapt our questions according to the agency visited, but we want to keep a central thread, connecting each interview, in order to develop a closer analysis and more precise comparisons after our trip. The conversations are recorded (pictures + microphone + video camera) so that we could restore them to you in the best quality.
All along our travels, we will maintain a website to showcase the project, and where users can follow our adventures : http://learningfromeuropa.fr/en/
After each meeting, we will prepare for you a small overview of the studio, its identity and its way of making. It will be completed by our impressions, and details that caught our attention. These small episodes of our travel will take the form of spontaneous short reports ; with video, text and photos as immediate testimony, in order to transcribe the better the atmosphere of the meeting and visited studios.
Once back, we will first provide a series of presentations at art, design and architecture schools, public venues or events related to those professions, so that this experience will be of benefit to the majority.
We would also testify of it through an exhibition, to compare these views and add our vision of young designers on these practices. This exhibition is not included in our current budget because its contents is not defined yet, as it will depend on our discoveries. It will be the subject of further sources of funding.
In a longer term perspective, we would like to materialize this project in a book, to make this panorama of European creation accessible to all.
You can already follow the evolution of the project through our website but also on social networks as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.
The complete journey count about thirty steps spread over a 4 months trip. It will be conducted in two 2-months periods, because the firms are mostly closed in August.
We will pass through major European capitals such as Rome, Berlin, Brussels and Athens, but we also want to emphasize the dynamism that can be found in smaller cities that have a growing cultural vitality as Krakow in Poland, or Timisoara in Romania and Thessaloniki, Greece.
Map of the full itinerary :
To ensure that we can carry out this project, we had to cut our trip in three different levels, adapting the itinerary depending on the campaign's success.
The final wealth an diversity of the project depends on you. Your support will give life to this adventure and make it the best and the most exciting as possible! All together we can make this experience a wonderful tool to inspire students, professionals and other curious!
Waar dient de collecte voor
Our personnal contributions and a grant obtained from the Rhône-Alpes Region allow us to fund the fixed expenses of the project, and about three weeks of traveling.
# FIRST BEARING 5000 € would allow us to make a 6-week course, 12 steps, including a number of countries in Eastern Europe, experiencing a real boom in design and architecture areas.
The challenge is even to exceed this initial goal, to make the project more complete and accurate, to cary out the tour as we designed it initially :
# FOR 6500 € : WINTER IS COMING!
We can add the Baltic countries to our courses, but also Helsinki and Stockholm >> 6 additional steps for 9 weeks of travel.
We better don't forget to put the down jackets in the luggage!
# FOR 8000 € : FULL MONTY!
This is the amount to reach to complete the entire project!
The initialy planned route may be made, as we had designed it while imagining the project, with 31 steps spread over 4 months of travel. Which will allow us to meet nearly 40 studios and to accurately compare the design approaches in Europe.
# If we exceed these levels, then let's party !!
We will not only cary out the most complete course, but we could also think of the following, to enrich the project and bring the adventure further:
- Go visiting studios in the most western European countries, too far from our course: Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Ireland ...
- Mounting an exhibition that will confront the harvested practices.
- Bringing with us a better equipment for even better return of our discoveries!
We have prepared a series of rewards to thank you, but also for you to share our experience with friends and family and promote the wealth of European design and architecture!
Here's what we planned for you guys:
- Exclusive content specially prepared for our contributors, to follow the project as closely as possible; - Posters, totebags and other screen printing treats, thanks to the slick graphics of our adorable Johan Giraud; - Live exchanges with us live during and after the trip for all the anecdotes from across Europe!
And if you are part of a company or an organization, consider our special packs "SPONSOR!" and "LA CONF!", demonstrating the commitment of your organization in promoting innovation in design and architecture, and dynamism in Europe! Your contribution can also get a tax deduction.
