LIVING IN THE REFUGEE SAHARAWI CAMPS

The Saharawis wait. They are condemned to perpetual anguish and perpetual nostalgia. The refugee camps carry the names of their kidnapped cities, their lost meeting places, their haunts: L’ayoun, Smara, Dakhla. They are called children of the clouds because they have always chased the rain. For more than 30 years they have also pursued justice, which in our world seems rarer even than water in the desert. (Eduardo Galeano)

My name is Stefano Montesi and I’m an italian photographer. I live and work in Rome and collaborate with various newspapers since 1980.. For some years I take great interest in the vicissitudes of saharawi people, chased away from their land by the Moroccan army and forced to live in refugee camps in the Hammada desert, in the south Algeria. Many times I visited these refugee camps where I have done thousands of photos those I hope will become a volume of photographs. I would like to let the world know sufferings but also the great dignity. This people live in exile since 1975 and the world seems to have forgotten them.

The volume of photographs is compound from 120 photos with captions, it’s already made up into pages and includes also an interview with Omar Minh, representative of the Polisario Front in Italy. This book contains a chronology to reconstruct the events of the past from the 1514 UN Declaration of 1960, which acknowledge the indipendence of the people colonized, up to the 2010 protest in Gdeim Izik, the field of dignity, suppressed with bloodshed by the Moroccan government.

I saharawi aspettano.
