Grâce à vous, le premier album du Dedication Big Band deviendra réalité!!! Il reste encore 29 heures avant la fin de notre campagne, et nous visons les 110%! Si nous les atteignons, notre budget augmenté nous permettra d’engager un(e) attaché(e) de presse, qui diffusera loin et fort la musique du Dedication Big Band dans les radios, presses spécialisées, blogs, et autres… si vous souhaitez parler de notre projet autour de vous, c’est le moment ou jamais! Chers toutes et toutes, Les émotions étaient fortes ces derniers jours! De mardi à jeudi, le Dedication Big Band s'est installé aux fameux studios de Meudon pour enregistrer leur notre album, et nous avons relevé le défi! Après trois jours de prises, nous avons une quinzaine de morceaux, dont la plupart figureront sur le disque que vous soutenez, et dont le nom sera bientôt dévoilé! Parce que les images en disent souvent plus que les mots, voici une brève chronologie des trois derniers jours en vidéo ci-dessous! From Tuesday to Thursday, the DBB went into the Meudon studios to record our upcoming album, and we rose to the challenge! In just under three days, we laid down 15 tracks, most of which will be on the record (whose name will soon be released)! Temps de lecture estimé: 15mn The Dedication Big Band joue la Marche des Femmes Le 20 janvier 2017, le nouveau président des Etats-Unis Donald Trump investit la Maison Blanche. Pendant la période d’élection, de nombreux scandales concernant ses rapports aux femmes avaient fait surface et choqué des millions d’américains. Le 21 janvier voit donc un rassemblement historique aux Etats Unis autour, notamment, des droits des femmes, et des millions de citoyens manifestent dans les rues du monde entier. Pourquoi composer sur le thème de la Marche des Femmes? Le Dedication Big Band, bien que composé entièrement d’hommes, tente d’être conscient des problématiques sexistes d’aujourd'hui. Le monde de la musique, et du jazz en France, est composé en majeure partie d’hommes, occupant disproportionnellement les postes de direction et de chefs de département dans l’enseignement. Le message de la Marche des Femmes est fort, important et d’une grande pertinence aujourd’hui. Après avoir arrangé et dirigé “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOV3jn1q1bs" target="_blank">Le Corps des Femmes” aux côté de la chanteuse-autrice-compositrice Mathilde en 2017</a>, j’ai donc été inspiré d’exprimer la volonté féministe du DBB dans une composition dédiée à ce mouvement. Tout comme la Marche des Femmes, elle est forte, bruyante, et ne fait pas de manières. Comment est-elle représentée musicalement? <a href="https://youtu.be/ffb_5X59_DA?t=22" target="_blank">La citation de l’actrice Ashley Judd</a>, qui sert d’enclenche mélodique à la composition, est répétée en canon et transposée, telle une armée de manifestantes sans relâche. Lorsque la dissonance des voix laisse place à une forte entente commune, intervient le refrain. Brève interlude de la batterie en écho au rythme Djansa des djembés (vous avez déjà vu une manifestation sans djembés?), et les saxophones puis le big band au complet jouent un furieux refrain de manifestation - “We Don’t Want You Donald Trump!”. On ne reniera pas<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zgre3CW7CI" target="_blank"> l’inspiration d’une mythique manifestante anti-Trump </a>devant son église. Solo de trombone hurlant, question-réponse entre le chef de file et les manifestants, refrains davantage hurlés que chantés… tout y est (presque) pour transporter les musiciens et leur public dans une féroce manifestation, le temps d’un morceau! During the election, numerous scandals evoking his relationship to womankind came to light, shocking millions of Americans (not really though). Thus, millions of citizens worldwide took to the streets in a historical protest, mainly concerning womens’ rights issues. Why write a song about the Women’s March? Though comprised exclusively of men, the Dedication Big Band aims to develop its awareness of gender issues today. The music world, and that of French jazz, is mainly comprised of men, who are disproportionately present in direction and head of department positions. We believe that the message of the Women’s March is strong and highly pertinent today. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOV3jn1q1bs" target="_blank">After having conducted and arranged “Le Corps des Femmes”, a powerful feminist anthem, alongside singer-songwriter-author Mathilde in 2017,</a> I was inspired to express the Dedication Big Band’s feminist side in a composition dedicated to the March. Much alike the Women’s March, this composition is righteous, loud and angry. How is the Women’s March illustrated musically? <a href="https://youtu.be/ffb_5X59_DA?t=22" target="_blank">Actress Ashley Judd’s now famous quote</a>, “I Am A Nasty Woman!”, used as an opined melodic “hook”, is repeated in canon and transposed, like an army of relentless protesters. After a while, the dissonance leads to togetherness, setting the stage for the chorus. After a brief djembe-like drum interlude (in France, no such thing as a rally without djembes…), the saxophones, relayed by the full band, shout together a furious rally cry: “We Don’t Want You, Donald Trump”. This was in no small part inspired by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zgre3CW7CI" target="_blank">one badass solo protester.</a> These are followed by a raging trombone solo, question-and-answer with the band (read: army of protesters), chorus that are more “shouted" rather than played… everything here is meant to take the audience out of the venue (figuratively!) and inside the protest. Avec l'ingénieur son principal Julien Bassères (oui, celui qui a un Grammy!) et son assistant Clément, nous avons pu faire le tour des questions d'organisation, de disposition, de planning, et de parler du concept de l'album. J'ai également fait un petit test piano - ici c'est le Fazioli, car le Steinway était en maintenance.
