Breaking Point

Bonjour, je m’appelle Florine Thiebaud et je suis une artiste photographe basée à Bruxelles. Cette campagne de crowdfunding me permettra de récolter l’argent nécessaire pour financer la production de mon livre d’artiste: Breaking Point. Hello, my name is Florine Thiebaud and I am an artist photographer based in Brussels. This crowdfunding campaign will allow me to raise the necessary amount in order to finance the production of my artist book: Breaking Point. LE PROJET / THE PROJECT Depuis 2016 je travaille sur l’exil en Grèce. Le projet que je présente ici traite de l’attente de personnes pour leurs papiers. Après mon premier projet "Exils" (2016-2017) à Lesbos et Agios Efstratios, je me suis rendue régulièrement sur l’île de Chios puis à Leros, Athènes et Oenofyta entre 2017 et 2019. À Chios j’ai très vite rencontré Edmond et Feras. Tous les deux de mon âge et obligés de vivre dans le camp Vial depuis plusieurs mois déjà, je les accompagnais dans leurs journées et ils m’expliquaient les conditions sur l’ile, les démarches à suivre et leurs espoirs pour la suite. C’est aussi à ce moment que j’ai rencontré Mustapha, qui m’a tout de suite mis en contact avec Soumaya, Sally, Razan et leur famille, relogées dans un appartement provisoire et arrivées en même temps que Edmond et Feras. Souvent invitée chez elles, j’ai suivi le traitement de leur dossier, la réponse positive pour Athènes, l’inscription à l’école, et les questionnements pour la suite. Suite à mon projet à Lesbos, je voyais la situation empirer pour les personnes arrivant en Grèce. M'y rendant régulièrement, j'ai vu mes contacts parfois perdre espoir et faire face à un système cherchant à décourager les personnes de rester ou d’aller plus loin. "Breaking Point" est un travail né du temps passé avec Feras, des discussions animées avec Edmond, des après-midi avec Mariam et ses soeurs, des explications de Mustapha, des journées vides et d’autres remplies avec Diallo et Sylla, de moments difficiles, des errances dans Athènes, des échanges dans le camp d’Oenofyta avec Nazar et celui de Vial avec Sadam et du temps accordé par tant de personnes. Je vois la publication de ce livre comme un aboutissement nécessaire et me permettant de rendre hommage à leur résilience. Since 2016 I am working on the subject of exile in Greece. Here, "Breaking Point" is about people waiting for their papers. After my project "Exiles" (2016-2017) in Lesbos and Agios Efstratios, I traveled regularly on the island Chios and then Leros, Athens and Oenofyta, between 2017 and 2019. In Chios I quickly met Edmond and Feras. Both of my age and forced to live in Vial camp since a few months already, we were spending a lot of time together, and they explained to me the conditions on the island, the process to follow, and their hopes for the future. I met Mustapha at the same time and he directly introduced me to Soumaya, Sally, Razan and their family. They arrived at the same time than Edmond and Feras and were rehoused in a temporary apartment. Often invited at their place, I followed their file processing, the positive answer for Athens, the school enrollment and their concerns for the future. Following my project in Lesbos, I witnessed the situation getting worse for people arriving in Greece. Going there regularly, I saw my contacts loosing hope and having to face a system seeking to discourage them from staying or going further. “Breaking Point” comes from the time I spent with Feras, lively talks with Edmond, afternoons spent with Mariam and her sisters, explanations from Mustapha, empty days and some full along Diallo and Sylla, difficult times, wonderings in Athens, exchanges inside Oenofyta camp with Nazar and in Vial with Sadam, and from the time granted by so many people. I see the publication of this book as a necessary achievement and allowing me to pay tribute to their resilience. Sur les îles grecques, les personnes doivent attendre la décision concernant leurs papiers : pouvoir se rendre à Athènes où iels devront à nouveau attendre la décision finale de leurs dossiers, ou l’expulsion de Grèce vers la Turquie. Beaucoup espèrent se rendre dans d’autres pays européens tandis qu'une partie choisit de rester en Grèce. Depuis l'accord migratoire entre la Turquie et l’Europe en 2016, visant à limiter les arrivées sur le territoire de l’Union, le processus a été ralenti et l’attente pour une réponse prend dans la majeur partie des cas des années. Les camps sont sur-peuplés et insalubres, et l’aide existante est loin d’être à la hauteur de la demande. Seulement certaines familles ou mineurs isolés sont relogés dans des appartements pour un temps. L’autorisation de travailler vient avec la bonne carte de séjour, et en attendant les personnes dépendent d’une infime aide financière du gouvernement et sont privées d’autonomie. À Chios où j’ai rencontré mes contacts, plusieurs ONG cherchent justement des solutions pour combler le vide des journées, en plus des réponses aux besoins urgents et vitaux. On the Greek islands, the persons have to wait for the answer regarding their papers: they will be allowed to go to Athens where they will have to wait for the final decision regarding their situation, or the Greek government can choose the deportation to Turkey. Many hope to travel to an other European country when others will decide to stay in Greece. Since the EU-Turkey deal in 2016, aiming for a restriction of arrivals in EU territory, the process is even slower and receiving a final answer will usually take up to several years. Camps are overcrowded and unhealthy, and existing aid falls far short of demand. Only some families and unaccompanied minors are rehoused in apartments. Only the right card will give the authorization to work, and in the meantime people depend on a minor financial assistance from the government and are deprived of autonomy. In Chios where I met my contacts, several NGOs are looking for solutions to fill the gap of the days, in addition to responses to urgent and vital needs. Nous passions du temps ensemble, restions en contact et nous retrouvions au fur et à mesure de leurs déplacements. Témoin de l’évolution ou absence d’évolution de leurs dossiers, je m’interroge sur plusieurs aspects de cette attente incontrôlable. Cette recherche sur l’exil est le résultat d’une réflexion personnelle sur la relation d’une personne à un territoire nouveau et inconnu. En reconnaissant la complexité de ce sujet, j’ai décidé de me concentrer sur l’attente. Ce moment d’entre deux, sur le fil, que le corps et l’esprit rejettent. Ici, certains corps sont tendus alors que d’autres expriment une profonde lassitude ou une absence de développement. We spent time together, stayed in touch and met on several occasions as they traveled. By being a witness of their situation’s evolutions, I am questioning different aspects of this waiting and the loss of control. This project about exile comes from a personal thinking about the relationship of a person to a new and unknown territory. Recognizing the complexity of this subject, I am questioning here the waiting. This in-between moment, on the edge, that mind and body can’t accept. A physical tension appears from some bodies while others show a deep weariness or an absence of development. Cette évolution dans ma réflexion a été possible grâce à Edmond, Feras, Mustapha et toutes mes rencontres, d'abord à Chios puis Leros, et quelque temps plus tard à Athènes lorsqu’iels étaient autorisés à s’y rendre. Alors que je passais mes journées avec eux.elles, j’étais frustrée devant leurs situations qui n’évoluaient pas. C’est ainsi que j’ai réalisé que je cherchais de l’action dans une situation où il y en a très peu et que leur attente en Grèce est marquée par la monotonie. Je devais donc me concentrer sur cet aspect. My thinking evolved thanks to Edmond, Feras, Mustapha and all my encounters first in Chios and Leros, and later in Athens when they were authorized to travel there. As the time was passing by, I was very frustrated to see that the situation for their papers didn’t evolve. And this is how I realized that I had to focus on the monotony of the waiting. Le temps passe à travers des personnes photographiées de près à plusieurs reprises et qui changent. Comment traduire visuellement les conséquences sur un corps de l’enfermement dans un lieu étranger sans repères et certitudes? À travers la photographie de Razan endormie ou de Sadam et Sylla s’enlaçant, une balance semble apparaître dans cet état. Mais cela ne dure jamais et l’incertitude continue. Time passes by through several close-up and repetitive portraits. How to translate visually the consequences on a body trapped in a foreign territory without bearings and certainties? Through a picture of Razan asleep or Sadam and Sylla embracing each others, a balance seems to appear within this state. However, it never lasts and a state of uncertainty remains. Traiter de l’attente revient bien sûr à traiter du temps. Ici il est suspendu et les mêmes jours se répètent, encore et encore, jusqu’à la date de l’entretien et la décision finale. Les images sont les résultats des moments que je passe avec mes contacts ou pendant leur absence. Il s’agissait de rendre compte et amener à reconnaître la tension, et aussi la patience, engendrées par cette attente incontrôlable. Talking about the waiting means talking about time. Here, it stopped and the same days are taking place over and over until the final decision. My photographs are the result of the time with my contacts or during their absence. This was about a recognition and consciousness of the patience and the tension caused by this unbearable waiting. Le livre final a un total de 128 pages, dont 65 images en couleur. Il est accompagné d'un livret format a5 (30 pages) glissé à l'intérieur avec des extraits de textes, d'échanges, des prises de notes et quelques images. Après une licence en études cinématographiques à Montpellier puis un bachelor photographie à l’ESA le 75 à Bruxelles, j’ai été diplômé d’un master en arts visuels-photographie de l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers avec le Prix de l’Académie. En 2017, mon projet "Exils" a reçu le prix Roger de Conynck de la Fondation Roi Baudouin et a été exposé à la galerie Recyclart. Sélectionnée en 2019 comme talent belge émergent avec le .Tiff, "Breaking Point" a été montré dans plusieurs institutions belges comme la galerie Satellite de Liège (2019), le FOMU d’Anvers (2020) et la galerie Contretype à Bruxelles dans le cadre des propositions d'artistes (2020-2021). Ainsi que durant les projections du Jury des Boutographies (2021). En 2020 je fais partie des lauréat.es pour le Prix de l'Image de la Sofam. J'ai participé également à plusieurs lectures en public comme les "Midis de la Poésie" de Namur invitée par J-M Bodson (2017), "Pitch your project" de Donkere Kamer (2018) les ".Tiffs talks" et "Piece of Cake presentation day" au FOMU d'Anvers (2019). La maquette d'"Exils" faisait partie de l'exposition Belgian Photobooks (FOMU, 2019) dans la série Belgian Schools, tandis que celle de "Breaking Point" a été présenté pendant l'Istanbul Photobook Festival en 2019 en préselection pour le Prix du Dummy. I am a French artist photographer based in Brussels. Following a cinema BA in France, I did a photography BA at ESA le 75 in Brussels, and then graduated with a visual art master degree at the KASKA (Antwerp) with the Academy Prize. In 2017 my project Exiles received the Roger de Coninck Prize (Roi Baudouin foundation) and was then exhibited at Recyclart gallery. Selected as part of .Tiff in 2019 as an emerging talent, I exhibited Breaking Point in several belgian institutions such as Satellite gallery (Liege, 2019), FOMU (Antwerp, 2020), and at the Contretype Gallery (Brussels, 202-2021) as part of Propositions d'Artistes. As well as during the Jury's screenings at Boutographies (2021). In 2020 I am one of the laureates for the Image Prize by Sofam. Moreover, I took part in different public talks : "Midi de la Poésie" invited by J-M Bodson (Namur, 2017), "Pitch your project" (de Donkere Kamer, 2018), the ".Tiff talks" and "Piece of Cake presentation day" (FOMU, 2019).
