Empty buildings and people forced to sleep rough, that’s the sad paradox you can observe in Lisbon. However, these empty buildings come back to life thanks to some street artists. Graffitis graffiti, stickers, stencils, and all kinds of street art are part of Lisbon’s landscape. Sometimes activist, anti-system or simply a demonstration of the artist’s graphic style, Portuguese street art has become omnipresent !

During a first trip to Lisbon, we found out that there seemed to be a unique way of protesting against the 2008 financial crisis and the austerity measures taken by the Portuguese government. Because it is not covered by mainstream media, it seems very important for us to talk about this way of prostesting through art. Never since the 1974 Carnation revolution (révolution des oeillets), have the walls of Lisbon had so many things to say. We would like to find out about this situation! So a second trip to Lisbon is being planned!

Blu – "Sucking the planet dry"

This kind of protest art is getting more and more popular in the Portuguese capital. This increase in public interest is happening for a reason. In 2008, there were 4000 abandoned buildings in Lisbon, most of them used by street artists. Nowadays, even though the economic situation hasn’t changed much, street art is developing and is on its way to turning Lisbon into the new European street art capital.

“Nowadays, Lisbon is one the European street art capitals just like Berlin, London or even Bristol” claimed Laura Ramos, a Portuguese ex-journalist, in August 2012.

STRA- "Merry crisis", décembre 2012

“These messages are the voice of a generation [...] Within six years, I saw street art evolving from a minor practice, restricted to certain parts of the city, into a wild movement close to a real trend / fashion phenomenon", said the ex-journalist Laura Ramos

Street Art : Vhils investit Lisbonne - videos.arte.tvArte

-Vhils, a young and very promising street artist, sculpting monumental pieces on abandoned houses in Lisbon.

Many questions are left unanswered : What is the underlying connection between the economic crisis and street art activism? Is Lisbon an isolated case or are there other Portuguese cities going through the same transformation / witnessing the same phenomenon / trend ?

Are people interested in street art and its attempt to fight against the economic system? In order to answer these questions, we need your help! So get on board!
