Speaking Tango, a music album by Minino Garay & Hernan Jacinto

in a few words :

This is the first music album totally dedicated to the music style and committed poetry called «speaking tango », created by Minino Garay in early 2000. The music recording started on November 13th and the goal is to share the album with you in exclusivity from February 20th (2021) onwards!

about the author and origins of the project

I am born in Argentina and live in France since 28 years, performing as a percussionist with the international jazz musicians. I was part of 220 music album recordings, including 10 in my name.

Today I would like to see a very dear project of mine come true, which I develop since exactly 20 years: the recording of the music album « Speaking Tango ».

Are you familiar with slam? While I was recording my very first album - Minino Garay y los Tambores del Sur - in 1999, I encountered the poetess called Dana Bryant who declaimed her texts in the « spoken word » style, the roots of slam. This poetry spoken out loud really touched me and I naturally created a style of my own that I embody since then step by step, on stage and in my music albums, style that I called « speaking tango ». Texts are very important in this musical style, and it is imprinted in the tango spirit. This spirit is like a sad thought which is danced and which embodies hope. And with my experience of percussionist, I wrote music for these texts, inspired by jazz and tango rhythms.

I chose a very deep tango for my first music album: « Uno ». I took the words out of their usual context and I highlighted them in a new manner, with a more contemporary music. This mix of declamation with tango and jazz made me connect with a younger audience.

This spoken style features all the music albums I recorded the last 20 years. Today I would like to dedicate a full album to this style « speaking tango » and share the making of this album with a great pianist from Argentina, Hernan Jacinto, who will arrange all the instrumental tracks and the album in general. Self-educated in music from 6 years old onwards, he later won a grant to study in the Berklee music college in Boston. Three years later he was performing more than 25 concerts in Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Croatia. He was awarded by the great media group Clarin from Argentina as « Jazz revelation» in 2009 and he won his first « Latin Grammy » in 2017. He now tours the world and recorded 7 albums.

I share this musical journey with other very dear musicians :

• Jean-Marie Ecay on electric guitar (the guitarist of Billy Cobhan and Didier Lockwood)

• Christophe Wallemme and Flavio Romero on double bass

• Magic Malik on flute

• Grégoire Maret à on harmonica

• Stéphane Edouard on Indian percussions

• André Cecarelli on drums

• and to accompany me with their voices, David Lynx, Melingo, Alex Pandev, Adriana Varela and the comedian Daniel Araoz.

The recording started on November 13th with David Lynx and the song « Solo con un beso », and with Christophe Wallemme for the song « Boca con boca ».

I will keep working in the studio with the musicians for 2 months between Paris and Buenos Aires with the goal to finish the album on 25th January 2021. I would need about 1 month to finalize it (mixing and mastering) and from February 20th onwards I think it will be ready to be shared with you in exclusivity in its digital format. Its official release is planned in April 2021 with the music label Los Años Luz in South America and Viavox in Europe.

This album explores tango classics which are re-arranged by Hernan Jacinto (Desencuentro, Volver, Yira Yira), and welcomes one of his compositions (Partir), original covers (Los Chicos de Mi Barrio, Que lo Pario!, Adios Tierra mia, Boca con Boca), and new songs that I composed (Speaking Tango, Solo con un beso, Que Carajo, Tus Visceras).

13 songs talking about politics, inner beauty, wounds, love.

I would like to honor another very dear poetess of mine called Nury Taborda, her texts touch me very deeply!

I invite you to travel with me all throughout the music recording and I will step by step post what happens backstage.

In the current situation we are all living in today, we have time to cook, isn't it? It's been 20 years that this dish is simmering! I need your generosity to finally serve it to you and make you taste it!

Here are a few examples of this repertoire performed on stage:

« Los Chicos de mi barrio » (from 43’40 à 51’20) talking about my neighborhood in Cordoba, with Hernan Jacinto on piano, Flavio Romero on double bass

« Adios Tierra Mia » talking about the lands being taken away, about this pampa from Argentina sold to foreigners, with Hernan Jacinto on piano

« Yira Yira »: with Hernan Jacinto on piano and Flavio Romero on double bass, a tango classic by Carlos Gardel, the God of tango, born in Toulouse in France.
