Tu es un souvenir qui bouge, court-métrage

You are a memory that moves is a short experimental film which blends the history of phantom with an investigation into Queer identity. It is a poetic film that guides us through the threshold between the world of the living and the dead, the world of children and adults.

The film is written and directed by visual artist Sophie Valero, produced by Le Fresnoy, National Studio of Contemporary Art.

The project begins as a story of identical twins of which one, suddenly disappears. The double that remains instantly begins to search for its image and identity through the world. Throughout the rest of the film, this point of departure diffracts as a multitude of subtle bursts.

The film is organized in different parts: brothers and sisters braid the story touching on their similarities and on their differences, visions of a destroyed city are blended with those of a newly built city nearby, an androgenic character saunters in search of a moving memory, elusive, protean.

It is the evolution of a process which we will beheld in front of the eyes of the viewer, that of bereavement and of forgetfulness which blends with a development of a new identity.

This research opens a reflection of our relationship to traces and projections, our need to create relics and monuments.

While speaking to memory and mourning, furthermore, I want this project to render the experience of process sensitive. Through this path, I wish to transcribe this desire in an organic way, also with humour. In the perception of memories, layered ellipses, loops and reinventions mixing to give results that are at times unexpected.

The project equally carries a feminist vein. The project expresses inequalities in our societal structure and the construction of identity by the interviews between brothers and sisters, equally by the evocation of a double of another gender. The phantom is a being that denies definition of the self, a creature with a blurred edge. It pulls into question the border between gender, between the world of the living and dead, between the world of the image and that of reality. It is clearly a Queer project, in the form of its sense and beyond.

The site where the film will be shot is principally the city of Gibellina Vecchia. A city destroyed in 1968 by an earthquake, where there has been a to-scale monument built in its memory of each street, each the building. It has become a map which has become a territory for the memory, materialized in exactitude in it’s empty aesthetic. The site has been a decisive element throughout the development of the film and has itself become a entire character.

The plate of Gibellina becomes the decor of a poetic experience to revel in questions of identity and its mutation. This site will be paired with the ‘new’ Gibellina built just a few kilometers away.

Waar dient de collecte voor

Although Le Fresnoy founds the project, its development necessitates a larger production budget. In which case, we need you ! This campaign will enable us to pay for the transports of the team and the equipment in Sicily, and to rent two cars there for the shooting.

transports to Italy (flights, buses etc) for the 7 member

of the crew, with additional luggage for equipment : 1170€

2 car rental for the team : 980 €

gas : 350 €

Total : 2500 €

Your support will enable us to shoot this film in Italy, in a place that has become a main character of the project. If we surpass our goal, we could keep aside a more substantial sum for post-production and distribution.

I would like to warmly thank you for all your support that you bring to this project!
