2000 Books and a Library on Wheels for Indonesian children

* Pour la version en Français, changez la langue tout en bas de la page

WHY?

Simply because there is a real need for books in developing countries such as Indonesia. Did you know that over three-quarters of elementary schools in Indonesia do not have access to books or a library? And yet, this should be a minimum in their early education.

HOW?

Thanks to you and your donations, we will be able to buy 2,000 books and offer it to 12 Indonesian schools in remote areas of Indonesia.

WHY DONATE?

Your participation is exclusively dedicated to buy the books and to deliver them to Indonesian Schools.

WHO?

A French and Indonesian couple that want to contribute to the society through their love of adventure.

WHEN?

From the beginning of March 2017.

WHERE?

In Indonesia or more precisely a small part of Indonesia (given that there are more than 17,000 islands!!). Mainly on Java Island as well as Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (Lombok) and East Nusa Tenggara.

WHY WE BELIEVE BOOKS ARE IMPORTANT FOR THE CHILDREN:

Now let’s talk about the LONG TERM. These last few days have been very intense, with lots of contributor messages and a question that has come up frequently. That's why we want to write one more word about it: "How do we see things in the long term?"

  - After much research on the benefits of books, we have found hundreds of scientific research and article proving the impact of reading on children over the long term. Here are some excerpts of it:

The Huffington post in association with Le Monde: Article title: "Reading for pleasure is good for the schooling of the child"

"The recent study conducted across the Channel by the Institute of Education (IOE) is the first to examine the effects of regular reading on long-term cognitive development." [...] "By comparing the school progress of 5- and 10-year-olds, scientists found that those who read more than once a week at ten years had better results in all kinds of academic performances at 16-year-old" [...] "The personal reading of these children is just as important, if not more so than the level of education of their parents." [...] "The advantage of those who have literary activities, such as going to the library or reading newspapers, is four times than of those with graduate parents ..."

Here we target children from remote areas populated mainly by families with little or no education. We hope despite their social class, we also can give them the keys to success. We have to look at things in deeper, if we can impact even one child per village or area, we consider that is a great achievement for us. Moreover, let us not forget that this child is the future of his family or even village and it’s him or her that can impact the people of his community.

A few days ago, we watched one of our favourite show which is "Rendez-vous en Terre Inconnue" with Mélissa Theuriau among the Maasaei tribe in Tanzania, Africa (you can find it on youtube). This is the perfect example to show you how a single person who has had the chance to go to school has unimaginable importance over the life of her village and the survival of the community.

  - We also hope to make them visible. If we can awaken the curiosity of the people around us, we believe that we will be able to talk about these schools and hoping that the Indonesian Government, which has the necessary funds, will put in place actions to improve the learning conditions of these schools.

Our action may be small, but we believe it will bring differences!! As the Dalai Lama said it very well:

Why books?

Issei always had a particular interest in education and had always believed that all children should have access to it. In Indonesia, the level of poverty is very high for various reasons such as the economy, corruption, and lack of education. Therefore, we believe that by helping the children of Indonesia, by giving them access to books, we can assist them to open up their mind to new perspectives and to grow their imagination.

Of course, we would like to bring them all of they need such as a new building, decent school facilities and much more. But we were forced to admit that corruption is still strong in Indonesia. This is why we do not want to go through any intermediary. Instead, we want to have a direct impact on the children. We want to be 100% transparent and be sure that all of the contributions will benefit the children directly.

So we decided to go to 4 main islands of Indonesia: Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (Lombok) and East Nusa Tenggara Island.

These 4 islands form an accessible area encompassing the 4000+ kilometres for us and CombiLele to meet the children and deliver their books.

We will find 12 different schools in needs along the 4 main islands of Indonesia and offer the children a choice of 100 books for their school and maybe encourage them to create a library for their school in the future. But not only that, for the rest of the time, we will put books at the disposal of all the children of the different villages, towns that we will pass on our way so they can have easy access to books for several days through our library on wheels.

JESSICA

WHO AM I: 28 years old French.

MY SPECIALIZATION: Bachelor of Psychology from Bordeaux and volunteered for 2 full years in the association Trisomie 21 Aquitaine ( Association for Down Syndrome Children).

WHY I DO THIS PROJECT: I have always wanted to help and work with children. We want to make the most out of it.

  - Thanks to the library on wheels, we would like to speak with the children along the way and understand what their primary needs are. We also hope to meet the most disadvantaged schools in order to get them out of the shadows by making them talk through our adventure.

Here is a video that will give you a little glimpse of the children's enthusiasm when the books from a library on wheels arrives in their area and especially how they are brought to them. There are only a few library on wheels in Indonesia ran by amazing people and here are some of them.

We believe that all our KissBankers will be happy to be able to share this adventure with us, so we had the idea to create the Web series to take you with us.

You will have access to:

  - 1 episode per month dedicated to donating 100 books to one selected school.

  - 1 episode per week about our library on wheels and our VanLife along the way.

Your participation is exclusively dedicated to buy the books and to deliver them to the schools.
