The whole movie is designed on the basis of guided improvisation, and the cast is almost solely composed of rappers living in and around Saint-Denis, who had never acted in front of a camera before. Pascal thus spent an intensive month teaching them Actor’s-Studio inspired acting techniques. The rappers in Brooklyn are all freestyle experts, bringing in an unprecedented freshness, spontaneity, and authenticity. Pascal gathered a collective of 40 people around the project, and launched the shooting in Saint-Denis with no more than 6000 euro in his pocket, without help of any producer, or TV channel! Only armed with two digital cameras and a determined crew, he threw himself in, helter-skelter! Brooklyn was part of the ACID film selection shown at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and has been touring international festivals worldwide (Rio, Milan, Havana, Bucarest, New York, Lisbon, Goteborg, Tubingen-Stuttgart, Amsterdam etc.)

with KT GORIQUE, RA-FAL UCHIWA, Jalil NACIRI, Liliane ROVERE, Véronique RUGGIA SAURA, BLADE MC, DESPEE GONZALES, BABALI SHOW, Manon LEROY, HOUABY, OG KRAMS, INAYA, Sarah GUEM, ZIRKO, BOUZID, Nes POUNTA, VR, MARKO 93, POOPS, Evil SHIRO, Julien EYES, Jean Paul BATHANY, MILK COFFEE & SUGAR, RADIKAL MC, NEMIR, Jacques Henry FABRE

THE OTHERS ACTORS:

RAFAL UCHIWA (ISSA) :

Ra-fal, 24, born in Saint-Denis (93), is one of the most prized rap artists of his generation: Francofolies of la Rochelle, Clash des Fous Furieux x3, Clash des Titans x1, Rueil Hall Star, Tremplin de Saint-Denis... To film in an intimate, instinctive, poetic and complex manner the life of a music association in the 93, away from the prevailing victimization and law-and order expectations, by showing the everyday life, work, and creative process of a group, along with its troubles. To bring to light all of the beauty and sensitivity of characters that have too long been underestimated or caricatured by French cinema and the media. To film with LOVE their humanity, their darkness and their dreams, in a world that becomes more and more cynical, ossified and disenchanted every day. Brooklyn’s utopia is to make Art together, expecting nothing in return but the satisfaction and pride of putting together, with our own weapons, a collective and personal work, which remains true to our lives.

Pascal also wanted to show the internal conflicts within rap where ideological divides contrast with life choices, and where generations sometimes clash. How to pass on values and ethics, a culture, a history and a proletarian memory? Who accepts it? Who rejects it and why? How does this generation change take place? Through the ardent rivalry that brings together Coralie/Brooklyn and Issa, the rising star of Saint-Denis, Pascal Tessaud tries to question the notion of Success. What does succeeding in life mean? Between individualism and collective mindset, the film goes beyond the microcosm of Hip Hop and manages to become universal through philosophical reflection on each one’s place within a group, a collective, within a society that is more and more fragmented, divided and violent. BROOKLYN questions the place of women in our society and reintroduces the notion that hopes and dreams are the only way to fight back. BROOKLYN is a resistant film, with at its core a group that refuses to abandon its principles, its struggles and its integrity so as not to sink into individualism and self-destructive resentment.

Allocation of funds

Where will the raised funds go? Brooklyn was shot during the summer of 2013 à Saint-Denis, thanks to the energy of the streets, and the dedication and solidarity of a 40-people crew. Together they made their cinema dream come true, without asking permission to anybody, without resources. The schedulers for the ACID selection in Cannes gave an enthusiastic welcome to this artistic takeover in 2014, to our great joy. Today this pirate movie needs to find the path to its regularization, so that it gets a chance to be screened in public theaters. To achieve this goal, we need alternative financial support. 10,000 EURO would partially pay for the wages of the artists and technical crew 20,000 EURO would partially fund the ultimate post-production finishing touches (sound editing, calibration, definitive editing, mixing, and DCP output). By lack of means, we weren’t able to complete the movie as much as we would have wanted after Cannes. We need your help to give the film all the visual and sound quality, as well as the wide audience it deserves. We need you to help us make room for a “Made in 93”, totally independent and true-to-the-core movie [93 is the department code of Seine-Saint-Denis] inside the spectrum of French cinema. Without you, this movie, brought to fruition by beginners’ grace, cannot have any prospect of obtaining the CNC agreement it needs to get on the big screen through a professional distribution network. Today, you can get actively involved in the making of a feature film made in the Parisian suburbs, and crafted by the very people living there. Help us add the finishing touches to our project, so that a new French cinema, one deeply anchored in a social reality mainstream cinema too often caricatures, can arise. We are a team, alive and real. JOIN THE BROOKLYN CREW!!
