Soul Power Kongo ?

Soul Power Kongo is an art and culture festival set up in 2014 by Matombi Productions. Soul Power has a strong meaning in itself but we chose to add Kongo, the name of a great kingdom once located by the estuary of the Congo river, to form the whole name to say how important we think it is to bring Black people together after they’ve been scattered around by history. Soul Power is a bridge between Africa and its Diaspora. Its first ambition is to feed the soul, the mind and the senses with various art forms (music, drama, dance, painting, cinema, etc.) that remain genuine, thorough and educational at the same time and still entertaining.

Why this festival?

Soul Power Kongo was born from the urgent need to build a place where all African cultures and their Diasporas could meet and learn from one another on the continent. Since its 1st edition, the festival line up has been constantly seeking to get the perception of African cultures and all those related to them away from the clichés to which they are always attached. Faced with the threat of a cultural standardization, we see the preservation of what connects us to the rest of humanity as a vital necessity.

What makes this festival unique?

We give a huge importance to artistic training and musical education in particular. This is very meaningful in the Republic of the Congo which has no music academy and even more so in Pointe-Noire which has not a single Art school. The very few cultural places that do exist have fees completely out of reach for the middle class Congolese, hence the free workshops offered by Matombi Productions.

Our workshops

Some training is given for free before, during and even after the festival.

Before-festival : While we’re still working on the coming up festival, we take on some high-schools and colleges to raise awareness on the festival theme among the students. At this stage, local trainers set everything up.

The Trainers:

Music: Juliana Tsaty Massimina, music teacher at Charlemagne High-school. She’s coaching the musicians and the singers based in Congo. She’s in charge of all the logistics related to them and is part of the Soul Power Kongo team.

Painting: Jussie Nsana, drawing artist and painter. Apart from making all the paintings for the Soul Power exhibition, she does Art workshops with children and adults.

Spoken Word Arts: Gilles Douta, poet and slammer, he gives poetry writing workshops, along with drama and speech art.

During the festival

The Festival Piece: based on an idea from Sylvie Mavoungou Bayonne, Bina Soul questions 3 choreographers Tchekpo Dan Agbetou (Bénin), Florent Mahoukou (Congo) and Jade Bayonne (Congo-France) on the theme of this year’s festival: United Africa. On top of performing the piece (they’re currently working on it), the 3 choreographers who come from very different dance backgrounds, will hold workshops to teach some precious tips on their craft.

Filming the Festival: Wally Fall is a young filmmaker who made the 2015 festival film. He’s back this year to focus on an editing workshop with the local team created for last year festival.

Matombi productions ?

Who are we?

Sylvie Mavoungou Bayonne (Festival General Manager) She founded the festival Soul Power Kongo. She gained her experience in Europe where she organized many high profile festivals and events mainly in Paris. She was also known as DJ Kongokween in Paris, sharing her passion for classics in many clubs in the city. Sylvie has also directed 2 short films selected in festivals.

Juliana Tsaty Massimina (Artistic Director): Music teacher at Charlemagne High, Pointe-Noire French High School. She’s managing all the musicians based in Congo. She’s in charge of all the logistics related to them and is part of the festival managing team.

Virginie Papet (Road Manager/International artists): she managed tours for top class jazz and world music artists like Lucky Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Christina Branco, Marcus Miller, etc. For the festival, she worked with Fred Wesley, Valérie Louri and Thierry Cham so far.

Papi Babelana (Logistics & Security): After many years in France where he gained a solid experience working in security for big venues, now he’s back home and he mentors young men into the basics of security and logistics.

Kelson Coelho (IT Support): He’s in charge of the festival website, the social networks and managing all the content the festival puts online.

What we’ve done in Congo so far?

Allocation of funds

This year, the financial crisis has dropped by! If some partners are still backing us after 3 years, convinced by the attention Soul Power Kongo Festival is bringing on the city of Pointe-Noire, others have unfortunately parted ways.

We were left with only two options:

Either we cancelled the festival this year, blaming it on the financial crisis too and letting down all the expectations that the festival created from day one,

or we could take on the fight betting on all the people who believe, just like us, that the cause is right and goes beyond the festival itself. It goes way beyond us.

That money will help us receive the artists lined up in the 3rd Soul Power Kongo Festival in the best possible conditions. It with great honor and pleasure that we introduce them to you briefly:

We wish to headline this year’s festival with a huge icon of the Congolese Rumba. For those who still don’t know him yet, Sam Mangwana touched generations of families in Congo and elsewhere with hits like Fatimata, Georgette Ekins or more recently Galo Negro, title from a famous album with a new release this year and through which we can travel from Angola to Congo, stopping by Cuba. It’s been 40 years Sam Mangwana hasn’t performed in Gongo-Brazzaville, and in Pointe-Noire in particular. Thanks to your support, it’s more than a show that we wish to offer. It’s the whole soul of that music and its golden years that we want to celebrate and pass on to the new generations of musicians. We wish we could be carried away again by sounds of the past times played with today’s energy.

Created in 2014 by the creative energy unleashed by the 1st festival, Sam Mangwana’s local supporting act is no other than our very own Pointe-Noire Funk Brassband who will be performing the set they’ve been composing and building for the past two years. A challenge taken and a dream come true for the bandleader, the sax player Kiabelo Pascal (Vieux King).

Dans le cadre du Pré - Festival la Fanfare Funk de Pointe - Noire en concert.

Alongside Sam Mangwana, three talented choreographers have been working on a piece together inspired by the festival’s main topic this year: Africa United. Their names: Techkpo Dan Agbetou, Florent Mahoukou, Jade Bayonne and they’re backed by DJ Nodjock.

Based on an idea by Sylvie Mavoungou Bayonne, let’s imagine a story. The story of ancestral et nowadays Africa, told by moving bodies, figures defying space and time : Bina Soul (The Soul of Dance).

Put together by the choreographers Techkpo Dan Agbetou, Florent Mahoukou and Jade Bayonne, Bina Soul is a blowing fusion of three different dance backgrounds. It’s about celebrating the connection between young people and their elders at a time when individualism and the loss of solidarity are changing the way we’re living. How can we dominate our ego, push our inner being and create a common language to let harmony pave the way for a United Africa?

The festival thought to associate DJ Nodjock to that original collaboration to give the tempo and pay tribute to the inspiration that draws from a sound, a note or a song. Bina Soul is a creation that travels through time: it digs into the past, renders our present and propels us into the future.

The dance will then carry on the big screen: the Senegalese filmmaker Joseph Gaï Ramaka is invited this year to screen his film Karmen to us. The blowing sensuality of Karmen’s dance highlighted by Doudou N’diaye Rose’s drums is jostling traditions and questioning taboos surrounding her. The director took on Carmen’s myth to create a powerful and moving piece of art.

We’re asking for your help today because we strongly believe in our network’s strength. Some of you are already supporting us but today we need you to pass on the message to your friends and contacts so that, just like the two previous years, the festival is a collective success, meeting the high expectations and standards we set for it.

Our motto in kikongo: Ku lala ve! (Let’s stay awake, let’s fight). Just another way of saying hat we cannot go anywhere unless we make the first step.

FIRST LEVEL/ 2 000 €

We can fund the dance studio and the per diems in Congo for the creation BINA SOUL (160 euros of kisskissbankbank fees)

SECOND LEVEL/ 5000 €

We can fund all the salaries for BINA SOUL (700 euros as counterparties and 400 euros of KissKissBankBank fees).

THIRD LEVEL/ 10 000 €

We can fund all the artist residency fees in Germany for 3 choreographers, 1 DJ, 1 director over 24 days.

(And 1500 euros in all for counterparties and 800 euros of KissKissBank Bank fees)

FOURTH LEVEL/ 15 000 €

We can fund the plane tickets from Germany to Congo for 5 people along with the accomodation in Pointe-Noire, where the festival takes place.

(A total of 2400 euros for the counterparties and 1200 euros of KissKissBankBank fees).

FIFTH LEVEL/ 20 000 €

Wonderful !! You’ve just funded all the BINA SOUL creation and all the logistical fees attached to it.

(3500 euros for the counterparties and 1600 euros of KissKissBankBank fees).
