HIP HOP ARTISTS around the world

We are a group of 10 Belgian artists dedicated to the urban sector and passionate about the urban culture and arts (dancing, beatboxing, deejaying, hip hop events organization, audio-visual arts). A few months ago, we decided to carry out a research on the position / role of artists in Belgium (Europe) and in Benin (Africa).

From July 15 to 31, we have been traveling in Benin living an artistic exchange with 10 other urban artists from Benin. The goal of that stay was to experience a unique intercultural and artistic exchange but especially to question ourselves on the meaning of being an artist in Belgium and in Benin. During the whole stay, we have captured videos, interviews, interactions, with the goal of producing a report/documentary.

Why choosing Benin?

We have always been intrigued by Africa for being the historic cradle of dancing arts. This project was born in October 2016 when we had the chance to meet in Belgium with Sylvestre Doussa, director of Carrefour Jeunesse (a NGO certified by the Beninese government with the goal of bringing together young people from the city of Comé, to extracurricular activities and trainings). Thanks to him, we had the opportunity to meet 10 urban artists from Benin on Skype and to prepare the two-week trip together with a specific programme, planning, list of questions, interviews, etc.

The several online meetings we had with the Beninese group, helped us building our project and gave us a direction: we realized that we wanted to explore the topic of being an artist in Benin and in Belgium.

Concretely…

We have together prepared (the Beninese group with the Belgian group) a list of questions to go through during the stay, that also gave a clear direction to our trip. Our film-maker has come with us and captured videos of the dancing and oral exchanges and of the interviews with the goal of producing a 50-minute documentary. By the end of 2017, we aim at showing this documentary to a broad audience during an event that we will organize in Belgium.

Stay connected on our Facebook page for further information: https://www.facebook.com/HipHopArtistsAroundTheWorld/

Allocation of funds

A documentary, yes! But on what topic and at what costs?

For 50 minutes, we will show you some moments of our two-week trip in Comé (Bénin) at the Carrefour Jeunesse NGO, and we will explore several topical questions:

Which position does the artist have in Benin and in Belgium? What does “being an artist” mean? Which title and importance do we have? What life? What future?

The documentary will, on the one hand, highlight several issues linked to the urban sector and more specifically the hip-hop dance and culture as a medium of link between each other; and, on the other hand, it will also share some parts of each one’s life captured during interviews, dancing and oral exchanges within the group, site visits, meetings with other Beninese people, etc.

Hopefully those images will engender thinking, discussion, or even debate on how the artists are seen in those two countries.

(Un)fortunately, the costs for the trip and the documentary production are expensive. You will find below the list of requirements for the production:

Sony a7s2 + lens; Canon 5D Mark lll + lens; Polaroid + films; Disposable cameras ; Microphone RODE; Drone DJI Mavic Pro; Go Pro Hero 5; Memory card; external hard drive; tripod.

The material rental costs around 1500 € for a two-week filming. The filming and production cost around 3000 €. This includes the filming onsite, the preparation of the trip, the post-production (de-rushing, editing, calibration, etc.). Finally, the event we will organise to show the documentary by the end of 2017 will also include some costs such as venue renting, costs for food and drinks, marketing and staff involvement, etc.

Let us remind you that 8% of the contributions will be used as such: 5% goes to KKBB and 3% for the bank transactions.

Why helping us?

As urban Belgian artists, we believe there is a need for questioning the role of the artist in our country as 'artists' are not very much considered by the Belgian society. By exploring this topic in Belgium and in parallel in another country where dance is everywhere (Benin-Africa), we hope to raise awareness and engender thinking from a broader audience and make our contribution to this topic.

Without your help, we will not be able to produce the documentary due to a lack of time and material.

Thank you very much for your time and reading.

And don't forget to follow our adventure via our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/HipHopArtistsAroundTheWorld/
