Les Naufragés / court-métrage

/ SYNOPSIS /

Lou is a lawyer. She visits the prison to question Nina, an inmate who has just been incarcerated. These two women fight with their consciences and this meeting quickly takes a sinister turn.

/ STORYLINE /

“A person’s capacity to draw out a terrifying ferocity from within themself has always intrigued me. As an actress, the construction of this type of character fascinates me. This story struck a chord with me and it seemed obvious to write about it. I hoped to use my skills as an actress to create strong characters. On the one hand, there’s Lou, a young lawyer who pushes the limits of her professional conscience as she searches to understand the charges this inmate is facing. On the other hand, there’s Nina, who is searching for the reasons which pushed her to commit this irredeemable act. By mixing the ingredients of a thriller with more fantastical elements, I hope to maintain the film’s suspense from start to finish.” - Cécile

/ DIRECTION /

“In order to create the visual universe of the film Castaways, I shall follow the aesthetic styles of the thriller and film noir genres: low lighting, darker tones and accentuated shadows. In a style close to chiaroscuro, the film will be rich in contrast. This kind of lighting seeks to reaffirm the film’s intention: characters being constantly pulled between good and evil, between the dark and the light. As in my previous film, I look to blend genre conventions with a story anchored in reality. The fantastical elements will therefore be depicted in a realistic fashion. Through mixing fixed shots and controlled camera movements, I hope for the camera to take us into the story itself. It will not capture the story in the style of a documentary; it will lead us into it. The performance will be prepared with a shooting script and a storyboard in order to best pin down the visual and sound parameters.” - Mathieu

/ LE JEU D'ACTEUR /

“I shall approach the preparative work with the actors from three different angles. Firstly, during rehearsals, I hope to explore with them the gestures and movements of the characters (as they are depicted in the screenplay). Then, during the script readings, we will rework the texts and dialogues. Finally, I place special importance on appearances, that’s to say, the costumes, make-up and hair styles of each character. In order to create an honest depiction of this universe, I have spent considerable time in Belgium’s two women’s prisons (Gand and Oudenaarde). I have also watched many documentaries and reports on this subject, always with the intention of delving deeply into the universe of the film.” - Mathieu

/ MOODBOARD /

/ CREW PRESENTATION /

- MATHIEU MORTELMANS (FILM DIRECTOR)

Né en 1985, Mathieu a grandi dans une famille bilingue à Anvers.
