Help us build a boarding school for Senegalese children living with albinism!

Humanitarian Mission in Senegal 🇸🇳

(from November 20th to December 13th, 2019)

Organized by NOW (NGO), this volunteer mission aims to build a boarding school and to rehabilitate a center for Children Living with Albinism, in partnership with the National Association of Albinism in Senegal (ANAS).

Albinism in Senegal

In Senegal, 98% of People Living with Albinism die before the age of 40 because of skin cancer. A vast majority of these people are illiterate and forced into begging because of the discrimination and persecution they suffer from.

For instance, in Senegal, it is a traditional belief that having sexual intercourse with an albino can cure AIDS. Many People Living with Albinism are even mutilated and killed, as having a hand of theirs is believed to bring good luck.

If you wish to learn more, we invite you to visit the ANAS' website and their Facebook page.

ANAS

The National Association of Albinism in Senegal (ANAS) was created on May 14, 1997.

It aims to fight for People Living with Albinism's right to dignity and to raise awareness about the extremely difficult conditions in which they live in Senegal.

Located in the city of Thiès, 1 hour away from Dakar, the ANAS' center aims to be a school for Children Living with Albinism, as well as a place where People Living with Albinism can receive medical care and socio-professional support.

We invite you to read this article from Libération about the ANAS's actions.

THE MISSION

From November 20 to December 13, 2019, a dozen volunteers from our association will cooperate together to achieve the following goals :

  • Build a dormitory to host twenty Children Living with Albinism.
  • Renovate the ceilings of the existing school: they are in poor condition and crumble, which is dangerous for the schoolchildren.
  • Draw a colorful mural on the walls to bring fun, joy and beauty to the children's school life!

Waar dient de collecte voor

The funds we'll have collected will be used to purchase the equipment needed to build the dormitory, to renovate the center's ceilings which are in such poor condition that they are detrimental to the schoolchildren's health, and to create a mural, as well as to buy furniture for the boarding school and to support our mission's logistical costs.

Our goal is to reach 5,000 euros:

  • 4,000 euros for construction material: cement, plaster, corrugated iron sheets, paint, screws, nails, ladders, brushes, rollers, tarpaulins, construction tools.
  • 600 euros for the dormitory's furniture: bunk beds, chairs, tables.
  • 300 euros for logistical charges: taxis, snacks, refreshing drinks to keep our volunteers lively and happy!
  • 100 euros to purchase t-shirts with our NGO's logo for our volunteers!

Thank you from all of us at NOW!
