Stories of daily life - Pedagogical project between France and Thailand

My name is Valentin and I am a student at ENSCI-Les ateliers in Paris. One year ago, I had the opportunity to meet the people of Barn Bor Whee, a village in Ratchaburi province in Thailand. The richness of the traditional Karen community challenged me, I decided to create my own communication tool to understand the community's way of life: a map of the village to complete.

The project: Stories of Daily Life is the advanced version of this Thai initiative. It takes the form of an educational tool for schools and makes it possible to connect different territories. Today this project brings together Barn Bor Whee's school in Thailand and Mont-Bernenchon school in France. Both will work on this tool called the story collector.

The tool takes the form of a giant map of a territory in a neighbourhood or community. It is based on narrative and sensitive mapping workshops. The purpose of these workshops is to discover and share local cultural resources. French and Thai students will work with this tool for 6 months and exchange their results at the end.

- Enhance the transmission of a cultural heritage within a community by raising awareness among the younger generations of the richness of their own resources.

- Establish a support system conducive to intercultural sharing, allowing the gap between different cultures to be transformed into a space for reflection and learning.

1/ The giant map: textile support that gathers the stories. It is delivered in several parts. This map is a support that needs to be discussed and completed. It makes it possible to visualize and materialize its environment on a human scale and is the basis for the feedback of the workshops conducted. It allows stories to be shared and exchanged in a tangible way with other communities.

2/ The individual paper map: a space for annotation, sketching and ideas during the research.

STEP ONE: EXPLORE

Assemble the giant map and create exploration groups (by area or route...). Go to the site, observe, collect, photograph, sketch and record the information on the paper map.

SECOND STEP: REPRESENT

Choose a visual representation mode: drawing, mock-up, collage, printing to represent the story of your community. Choose the medium that best suits the narrative. Legend the representations.

STEP THREE: SHARE

Share the research of each group. Perforate and assemble the elements on the giant map. The map is now ready to be shared with other communities!

- September: Launch

Presentation of the tool in both schools to students and parents.

*September 0-15: Launch of the project in Mont-Bernenchon: presentation to the students and parents of the CE1-CE2 class.

*September 15-30: Flight to Thailand for the launch of the project in Barn Bor Whee, connecting schools by video conference from Thailand.

- October 2019 / February 2020 : Test phase

Both schools discover and represent their territories in parallel and following the same protocol!

- March / June 2020 : Finalization and exchange of the work carried out by the two schools

Waar dient de collecte voor

- If the crowdfunding reaches 100%, it allows me to make a round trip to Barn Bor Whee in September 2019 to launch the project. This is the minimum required and is essential for the project to take off in the best possible conditions. The experience must be a total success to match its ambitions.

- If the crowdfunding reaches 120% this allows me to cover the manufacturing costs of the devices (purchase of the material, prototyping, printing, financing of specific supplies for the classes). In this case, the experience will be optimal and we will be able to do extra things with quality equipment.

- If the crowdfunding exceeds all my expectations: it is the assurance of a memorable year for the Mont-Bernenchon and Barn Bor Whee school, incredible meetings in perspective, events organized throughout the year to communicate on the project and get together!
