Tabourets pour Mundolingua

Language is one of the fundamental abilities that makes us human.

To reveal the secrets of language, Mundolingua opened in 2013 to give you the opportunity to discover the world of language, languages and linguistics. Mundolingua invites you on a voyage in an unusual, fun and cozy setting, in the heart of the famous Latin quarter: between the Luxembourg gardens and Saint Sulpice.

Over 170 metres squared and open 7 days a week, 10am - 7pm, this extensive collection welcomes visitors of all abilities to play, experiment and discover language and the history of the languages of the world. Mundolingua creates this journey through text and videos on touch screens, games, quizzes and unusual objects. For example a head showing how sounds are created, language family trees and the famous Rosetta Stone facsimile.

Explore the pictures below of the museum before reading on to discover our exciting new project.

The project

We are excited to present our new project: replacing the original stools with matching stools that will be attached to the exhibit alcoves on a scissor mechanism and that can be pushed flat against the wall again. The current chairs are becoming old and unsafe for users. They also provide an obstruction for other visitors being able to wander around and enjoy the museum. The new system will be attached to the alcoves so easily tidied and moved away from visitors, essential for when we receive groups for guided tours and evening conferences. Renovating and implementing the new stools is crucial for not only allowing visitors to sit safely and comfortably, but also for increasing Mundolingua's line of revenue - organised visits from local schools and language classes. These workshops need safe and practical seating arrangements if they are to continue.

Here's the current impractical arrangement:

Now wouldn't this look better?

Discover the goodies you can receive on the right if you would like to support Mundolingua's project. Thank you so much for your support that allows us to continue educating and entertaining visitors in the world of language, languages and linguistics!

Our history

Mundolingua's founder, Mark Oremland arrived in France from his native New Zealand in 1994. He studied Linguistics at the Université Paris V - René Descartes. After succeeding in achieving his Masters degree he had the brilliant idea of creating a fun and accessible place dedicated to all things language and linguistics, the first in the world. This spark led to Mundolingua, which he created in collaboration with linguist Ilona Ponavicova who studied in Prague and Paris. They threw themselves into the project for 3 years with the help of a team also passionate about language and linguistics; ranging from Researchers to Tech help to Painters, resulting in an in-depth collection ready to be presented to the public in October 2013.

Here's a sneak peek behind the scenes:

Our aim: To replace the original stools with matching stools that will be attached to the exhibit alcoves on a scissor mechanism and that can be pushed flat against the wall again.

Why? The current chairs are becoming old and unsafe for users. They also provide an obstruction for other visitors being able to wander around and enjoy the museum. The new system will be attached to the wall so easily tidied and moved away from visitors.

What are the long-term effects? Renovating and implementing the stools is crucial for not only allowing visitors to sit safely and comfortably, but also for increasing Mundolingua's line of revenue - organised visits from local schools and language classes. These workshops need safe and practical seating arrangements if they are to continue.

What's the cost? 4250 euros

Materials

Wood: 7 euros x 40 stool seats = 280 euros

Metal and welding: 920 euros

Labour

3050 euros

= 4250 euros

If we succeed in going over our goal we will put the extra money towards creating educational material for visits from local schoolchildren and language classes.

Discover the goodies you can receive on the right if you would like to support Mundolingua's project. Thank you so much for your support that allows us to continue educating and entertaining visitors in the world of language, languages and linguistics!

Note: Large donations requiring a fiscal certificate can get in touch with us at contact@mundolingua.org
