Het project van A tot Z
W.A.K.A is an independent Franco - Cameroonian feature project whose shooting is scheduled from 19 November to 23 December 2012 in Douala, Cameroon.
Mathilde, a woman in her thirties, works as a waitress at a snack bar in Douala, Cameroon. Assaulted and raped one evening while she gets back home after work, Mathilde gets pregnant and loses her job. When she decides to keep the baby anyway, follows a descent into hell...
The story of "W.A.K.A" is primarily that of a mother desperate to provide needs for her child and preserve his purity and innocence. By choosing to confront this woman to the world of prostitution, the aim is clearly to put her in a degrading position in the society, in order to show better her strength and her fight as a mother. The film is a reflection on what a "good mother" is, to show that its most fair definition is not necessarily the one obvious to us. Actors from the Cameroonian diaspora as Patricia Bakalack or Yoli Fuller (2010 Cannes Talent), will mingle with those Cameroonian such as Alain Bomo Bomo to create strong characters.
A French actor Bruno Henry (French voice of many American actors, also winner of several awards as an actor) also joins the cast with a real desire to discover and shoot in Africa. And finally, my taste for challenges led me to propose one of the main role at the Cameroonian journalist Céline Victoria Fotso ("Je Wanda Magazine"), whose charisma and personality has immediately convinced me of her potential talent as an actress.
But the adventure of "W.A.K.A" will also be particularly the one of film collaboration between France and Cameroon. My aim: to go around the world with this movie through festivals, to have theaters release and especially, to create from more Cameroonian filmmakers the envy to make more ambitious movies and to those from abroad to more often choose their set in Africa in general and Cameroon in particular.
ABOUT FRANCOISE ELLONG
Director and Council Member of the BKSTS
(British Kinematograph Sound and Television Society)
I have known Francoise Ellong for over two years, during her studies at our University I was her Masters degree program leader. I have also viewed her work as part of our BKSTS activities and we have screened one of her films professionally here at the National Film Theatre in London. Her films remain some of the very best student productions completed at the University.
I would recommend her to you unconditionally as a very talented young film maker and wish her all the very best for her future career. The work she has produced in the past has been quite outstanding. I am particularly impressed by her talents as a Director and screenwriter. She is highly original and has shown great enterprise in realising her films. Francoise is highly competent technically as well as creatively, she interacts with all other film professionals on her projects to a very high standard."
