On pourrait si facilement faire autrement !

Oh oui !

Pour écouter la chanson My Life's a Cage : https://soundcloud.com/the-aim/06-my-lifes-a-cage

Page Facebook My Life's a Cage : ICI

Site web The aiM : ICI

Page Facebook de the aiM : ICI

Paroles de la chanson :

MY LIFE IS A CAGE

I’m the calf I’m the pig I was born in your hands Looking for the sense

Will my flesh will be bloody? Ma vie est une cage ! Ma vie est une cage !

INTERVIEW (ENGLISH) :

What is the “My LIFE'S A CAGE” project all about?

“My LIFE'S A CAGE” is one of our more militant songs, and we're keen to make a video of it. It takes an uncompromising look at animals on the way to slaughter. The lyrics put you in the place of a calf, pig, or a chicken on death row. They speak of their terror, their incomprehension at their appalling situation. Animals shouldn't be taken as unintelligent, insensitive beings with no personality — we now know they're not robots. For those who remain sceptical, science has studied this in depth in the last fifteen years and the inhuman treatment inflicted on them is unbearable — it's not worthy of us. These animals grow up in disastrous conditions, only to be killed, and they suffer shamefully.

Who wants to spend time in a slaughterhouse? That is the reality in question. You only need to take a look at the documentaries denouncing the millions of daily killings on the planet posted on the internet — it is a nameless horror. Not to mention vivisection and manufactured products tested in the laboratory on innocent victims. We simply must not close our eyes to this under the pretext that they are only animals. The ultimate goal of these legalised tortures and massacres is the service of the ignorant and selfish pleasures of people. The object is neither our survival nor even food security, rather our pleasure in eating them in a tasty sauce, wearing them, or to test our latest moisturisers. It could so easily be otherwise!

The issue is political, moral and philosophical. The food and pharmaceutical industries make huge profits on the back a mountain of suffering, while destroying the planet. This is unacceptable! If humankind, an animal among other animals, wants to continue to move in the direction of its history, that is to say in the direction of progress and elevation, it will be forced to abandon these medieval customs, the same way it has legislated against human slavery, torture, sexism, and all forms of behaviours that harm others.

Do you think people are willing to become vegetarian / vegan?

Oh, if I dared, I would say we're crazy... or at least inconsistent! Look, on the one hand we offer our children cuddly toy animals, we adopt dogs and cats to be pampered, even spending a great deal of money on them, while on the other hand we are bloodthirsty killers organizing an industry of death, slaughtering pigs, horses, cows, calves just a few days old, and newborn lambs, to make paté and shoes! It makes no sense, it is a kind of moral schizophrenia.

Yet it seems to me that the heart is not a divisible entity. The heart either is or it is not, right? It seems weird to cut it into independent parts! This paradox could be called “à la carte morality”. We all have a moral sense, but so often it is engaged according to its own interests... For example, we'd be frightened, heartbroken or angry, our hearts filled with sadness and incomprehension, if someone came to our house and slaughtered our cat or our dog. But that does not stop us from eating a sausage happily with our friends over a beer, while the pig in the sausage was as sensitive and intelligent as our pets. This is completely egocentric. It is a well known phenomenon that we pay more attention to that which is close to us — the same basic mechanisms underpins racism. While we are this self-centered, we will necessarily create suffering around us, or at least we will be completely indifferent to it. You know, every day we are told that the rule of law must be more powerful than the law of the jungle, that benevolence must prevail over hate, and that attention should supplant indifference... so how would it be if this basic wisdom were applied in everyday life and if we started by stopping the massacre of the lowest? Sometimes I ask my friends this question — “Why kill when you can avoid killing”? What it means to 'have a big heart' starts by not killing... right?

To answer the original question, I think most people are not vegetarians yet because they do not take the time to make the connection between what is on their plate and the animal that was killed to provide it. The proof is that we speak of animals as “food” without any true respect. Life goes so fast, and we never take the time to to find out. Many people may imagine that animals are like robots devoid of nerves, emotions and thoughts. But reading books by authors like the scientist Yves Christen, or just spending time with the animals in question may seriously upset your misapprehensions. Especially if you listen to your heart more than your taste buds!

Tell us about the video

It's going to be an animated piece by Nicolas De Bruyn, a young and talented designer living in Belgium, who specialises in animation. He is enormously talented and highly invested in this particular subject. We've talked a lot and we understand each other. We're hoping to tap into a ambition of art and ethics with “My Life's a Cage” — we are highly motivated, because the project is not your run-of-the-mill pop story. Rather than the usual narcissistic blathering we're looking at true suffering, and it is of the utmost urgency. The more we apply ourselves to this discourse as artists, politicians, writers, teachers, educators, philosophers, journalists and citizens on all sides, the sooner we stop these open massacres and tortures.

What is the purpose of the video?

The goal is to put our music at the service of an idea. Humbly participating at our small scale, in a cry of compassion which is starting to spread more and more around the world. It is a militant message hoping one day to see vegetarianism become as natural and common as the legal prohibition of killing, or torture or rape of another human being. We are not mistaken. The vegetarian philosophy and animal welfare as a whole are not driven by sentimentality, yelled by people out of touch with human society. We are neither embittered nor excluded from society. We are simply talking about love, respect, caring for others, whether human or animal. We are not tyrants — we are fighting a form of tyranny, supported by backward-looking and conservative traditionalists who have no desire to question their habits and selfish pleasures. And for those interested in politics, we call their attention to the fact that these killings are aimed primarily at making a profit — always a profit. In short, whether for humans in particular, or for living beings in general, we believe that vegetarianism is the true humanism. Were it to become the norm in our society, we would have taken a step towards a truly non-violent, genuinely peaceful philosophy, thereby raising our civilization to a greater level of dignity.

We have decided to pass on all royalties from the My Life's a Cage project to associations and projects working to defend the cause of animal rights.

Are there a more famous vegetarians than we think?

Oh yes! Einstein, Socrates, Pythagoras, Gandhi, Buddha, Tolstoy, Leonardo da Vinci and George Sand, for example, were convinced by vegetarian cause. And there are many other artists today — take Rosanna Arquette, Orlando Bloom, Richard Gere, Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Brad Pitt, Peter Dinklage, David Bowie, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Chris Martin (Coldplay), Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Robert Smith (the Cure), Bob Dylan, Moby, Keziah Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Thom Yorke (Radio Head)... the list goes on and on! We also have “our” journalist spearheading the vegetarian cause in France, Aymeric Caron, who we're very proud of. There are millions in every walk of life who share this view of the world. Not everyone lives in double cheeseburger land!

Yet all this is not enough, the revolt against suffering needs to go viral! “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by how it treats animals” as Gandhi said. It is time for us to understand that our ego is not the only thing capable of suffering or having needs. All living beings have this dual characteristic of seeking to avoid suffering and obtaining well-being — from the lowliest insect to Man.

What do you need to get the video made?

Reaching 6000 Euros would be ideal. Six months intensive work will be required to make a six minute short film. The video will be uncompromisingly militant and we want it to be visually strong. This will require a minimum amount of money, even if the team is entirely made up of volunteers for this particular project. You may like to know that a full-budget video of this scope can cost five or six times more at least! You can help us get the video made by contributing to our project KISS KISS BANK BANK. You can give 10, 20, 100 Euros or even more. Thank you so much for your help and support — we need you!

A few quotes...

Einstein — “Nothing can be more beneficial to human health and increased chances for survival of life on Earth, than the evolution towards a vegetarian diet.”

Tolstoy — “If a man aspires to a righteous life, his first act should be to refrain from harming animals.”

George Sand — “It will be a great step forward in the evolution of the human race when we come to eat fruit, and carnivores disappear from the Earth. Everything will be possible on this earth from the time we come to the end of war and the dish of meat.”

Pythagoras — “So long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain can not reap joy and love.”
