A PERIPHERAL URBAN GLOBAL WORLD : MEXICO
A Peripherial Urban Global World is an international film proyect dealing with a series of artistic and social issues.
The challenge is to create, through a three-episode film (FRANCE - MEXICO - JAPON), a current panorama on a worldly scale of an urban geography in progress, one that changes to the rhythm of concrete constructions. An urbanism of an unstable periphery, which redraws the borders of the cities and their populations.
The first episode, Paris, shot in 2013 is already available in Blu-ray and DCP and was selected as part of different festivals like ANTHROPOLOGIES NUMERIQUES, France.
The pre-production of the second episode –the objective of this campaign- , Mexico, will begin in august 2014.
And the third one, Tokyo, in 2016.
Pasquale Calone assumes a particular process in which he collaborates closely with the people of the endangered communities, who become both inspiration and performers of their own stories.
On a global scale, A peripherial Urban Global World describes a world made of people and places who have a story of their own, rich in traditions, becoming a global periphery that encompasses a specific form of social organization where the particularities are erased to lead to standardized zones, where the traditions of the small communities represent a brake for progress.
Nevertheless, the world is still formed by individuals.
However, in this quickly urbanized and standardized world, groups of individuals linked to their past and defending their identity, remain.
This fast evolution generates a human geography constantly moving, characterized by the displacement of communities who migrate from one place to another, first welcomed and then, after years of adapting, rejected.
An uneven struggle forces them to abandon their original, historic or sacred territories, risking their identities and creating fragile communities, in a perpetual evolution.
An evolution that makes the foundation of a global periphery formed by individuals where culture and personality dissolve and quietly vanish inside a new global and almost homogenous community.
THE MEXICAN EPISODE
Inspired by directors like Pasolini and De Sica, the reality is captured in the fiction using elements and problems that constitute it. My screenplays, in spite of not being documental, are based in a documentary-like form through direct working experiences in the field whose objective is to promote the participation of the people whose story we’re telling.
In the case of the Mexican episode, the intention is to explore the millenary indigenous universes that are disappearing because of the industrialization and the capitalism of the country. This rural population is threatened mainly by the urban centers, like Mexico city, whose population of over 20 million is one of the biggest and more densely populated areas of the world.
Based on the investigation, a scrip will be written to represent these situations.
Working together on the shared memory, traditions, popular beliefs and striving to bring together personalities, institutions and individuals of the same neighborhood, Pasquale Calone tries to challenge first and foremost the meaning of community and the concept of sharing the public space.
Face to face with a common problem, working together using artistic creative methods, new ties are formed, ties that enable the community to acquire again a fundamental role and to become a key reference to evaluate and defend. In the encounter and common creation, each individual instinctively puts on the line his/her capacities, knowledge, weaknesses, and does not refrain from sharing those while relying on others to do so.
The creation process of the film thus becomes a genuine laboratory of creation on the urban memory and its evolutions throughout the community and the individuals forming it. A community that is currently in danger due to those changes.
To act himself/herself and his/her own story becomes an artistic act of catharsis which allows inhabitants to put themselves into play and to become aware critically and ironically of ongoing events that threaten the history of the community. Inside a work of fiction that relates an event with roots in the current urban issues, where the community is face to face with a tension, a passage, or a risk of extinction, the citizens realize the meaning of what they are about to do in order to leave a trace and a future memory.
The goal for Pasquale Calone is to strip this event off media approach that creates out of these situations a television event, spectacular but ephemeral. The intention here is to create a stable and continuous memory, through the perspective of an insider; a vision of the every day life, the true life, where events follow each other in silence.
The intended result is a genuine, cinematographic fiction of professional quality: under the supervision of the artist, the citizens follow throughout the whole year acting workshops while the filming is taking place by a team of local cinema professionals.
During the process of gathering together the scenario and preparations for the filming, the artist, together with the inhabitants, produced photos, installations, performances, videos that are by themselves complete works of art, but that also form an ensemble with a narration developed through the use of various media.
The artworks produced during the project in Paris have already been exhibited at several official contemporary art venues.

EL EPISODIO MEXICANO : CHE CHEN CHA KA
Joshua es un timido niño de 8 años hijo de una familia católica mexicana. Con cualquier cosa que haga se encanta y sueña con los ojos abiertos evadiéndose del mundo superficial de las personas con las que vive. Pero un día, Joshua encuentra el coraje de pasar a la acción en el mundo real y se embarca en una odisea increíble que le hará atravesar el país y encontrar personas que cambiarán su vida para siempre.
EL EPISODIO MEXICANO CHE CHEN CHA KA, SE DESARROLLARÁ AL REDEDOR DE LA CREATION DE LA ESTRUCTURA DE UNA HISTORIA QUE PERMITA, A PARTIR DE LA ODISEA DE UN MUCHACHO LLAMADO JOSHUA Y SU EVOLUCIÓN PERSONAL, VIAJAR A TRAVÉS DE DIFERENTES GRUPOS SOCIALES Y ÉTNICOS DEL PAÍS CON SUS DIFERENCIAS Y SUS UNIVERSOS.
La serie completa consiste de tres episodios : Paris - México - Tokyo.
Cada episodio es independiente de los otros y puede ser presentado separadamente. Sin embargo, en su conjunto, los tres episodios constituyen un largometraje coherente de aproximadamente 120 minutos.
LA TRAYECTORIA GENERAL
A través de tres capitales mundiales, de América a Asia pasando por Europa, el proyecto involucra, dentro del proceso creativo de la ficción, a los habitantes de lugares que se conforman con los cambios de la globalización urbana. Cambios y evoluciones rápidos, agresivos, en donde el modus operandi es a menudo aquel de actuar sin dejar trazo.
