Fernand Baudin Students Publications

Fernand Baudin Students Publications is an event dedicated to editorial productions by students in Belgium, and connected to the international scene. Collective, experimental, reflexive, this second edition of the event will focus on the notion of tools - for production and for thinking. We invite you to participate in making this project a collective one, from the fundings to its whole organization!

Fernand Baudin Students Publications

A B O U T F B S P

Fernand Baudin Students Publications is a yearly event dedicated to editorial productions by students in Belgium, and connected to the international and professional scene.

Initiated by members of Fernand Baudin Prize (awarding the most beautiful Brussels and Wallonia books), this event aims to focus on research and reflexion around editorial practices, and brings together students from different superior art schools everywhere in Belgium. This event corresponds to a current and general regain of interest in editing, also visible in most superior art schools: new classes  and Master specialized in editorial practices. More than another “most beautiful book award”, this event offers a less hierarchical and competitive model, and implies a real participation and reflexion of the students at many levels, from the event’s conception and organization to the exhibition, lectures, discussions and round tables taking place during the event.

The first editions – 2012 to 2014 – of F B S P are very important years, for they propose to think about the format of this new kind of event, and to shape it collectively, instead of imposing (an existing) one.

Fernand Baudin Students Publications 2013 – The Tools Issue will happen in March 2013, during the international art book fairs Paper/View and Artists Print in Brussels – connecting students and professional (common and divergent) problematics and practices.

The first edition of F B S P, Fernand Baudin Students Publications 2012 – A Proposal focussed on the notion of event, inquiring on the question: what kind of event exist around book making and thinking, and what can we imagine, for instance in the context of students practices?

Here are some views of last year's event – exhibition display, lectures, communication elements – and the cover of the upcoming publication documenting the project.

exhibition display at Komplot Brussels during Artists Print in March 2012

lectures – BookHerBerg

lectures – Delphine Bedel

flyers/bookmarks realized with laser engraved lino cut

Program realized with laser engraved lino cut

cover of the 2012 publication – offered in exchange of your support of F B S P project here!

Allocation of funds

We need your support to organize the 2013 edition of the event – inviting people for lectures and events, making an exhibition and a publication documenting the event.

Fernand Baudin Students Publications is a new, independent, non-profit, collective project – which implies a particular and complex relation to funding issues.

The notion of independence is always a bit tricky (see for instance the many debates around "independent publishing"), as nothing is totally independent, detached from economical, political, pedagogical, etc. issues. For that project, being independent means being free of staying experimental and reflexive, adressing "students" and not a particular school or part of the country, questionning economical and pedagocial issues and not thinking in terms of competition or profit-driven interests...

Inspired by some (independent) publishing projects funded by using tools such as Kiss Kiss Bank Bank, we decided to use that way for this year's fund raising.

We think it is a really interesting solution, as it communicates directly to a community (also interesting in itself, because diverse, composed of individuals and maybe also schools and other institutions), and implies its involvement and trust in the project.

Christoph Keller proposes to nuance the notion of "independence" (sometimes inappropriate for his project Kiosk, Modes of Multiplication – archive of "independent" publishing) by using the term deliberately passionate.

One thing is sure: that project is made of love, but also of the time, sweat, efforts, and sometimes money of its participants and organizers.

That's why we invite you to participate in making this project a collective one, from the fundings to its whole organization!

Thank you so much,

The team of

http://fbsp.net/

http://www.facebook.com/FernandBaudinStudentsPublications/
