Back to 2012, on a spring evening…

While Thibault is about to fly to Malaysia for an internship, Louis-Hubert suggests him to undertake an odyssey at the bottom of the income pyramid. Latitude 30 Project was born…

While studying in business schools, we got passionate about the adventures undertaken by entrepreneurs in France and elsewhere to change things.

After walking through the humanitarian assistance, social entrepreneurship, the collaborative economy, the solidarity-based finance and other social innovations, we got our hands on C.K. Prahalad’s book: “the Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid”!

The idea is ambitious: large companies should not consider the 4 billion people living with less than 2$ per day as recipients but as entrepreneurs, consumers, suppliers and potential partners

What better way to study the efficiency of strategies set up by these companies than to get on-site?

“Go and meet the poor people in developing countries and visit the projects set up by companies to address their needs.”

We need your support to buy the essential equipment to carry out 2 operations, key to the project success!

They will enable to discover the daily life and the aspirations of the people in need. How does Shem's everyday existence in Indonesia look like? What is Ignacio doing to change things in his village in Bolivia? What are Jomo’s dreams for Kenya?

This will also allow us to compare their look between the different regions we will cross. Finally it represents a great opportunity to give them the floor and create the project together in order to better relate it to you

In brief

After providing short photography training to young students, we will lend them disposable cameras and we will offer them to take photos during one week, in our absence, of what is important to them in their daily life

- First week: Photography training to young students, lending of disposable cameras, photos taken in our absence.

- Second week: Sorting and developing the photographs, publication and return to young students.

- During the trip: 1 web-exhibition per month on our website.

- After the odyssey: An exhibition of the best pictures simultaneously with a conference.

- 120 disposable cameras (10 per village)

- Development of the pictures

- Mini video projector

In brief

After observing the ordinary of the village thanks to “Show me where you live”, we will invite our hosts to tell us their aspirations, for their community as well as their job, this time in front of our camera. Who are they? Do they want some change? What is their vision of their future? What are their motivations?

- First week: Share the daily life with the population and look for a reliable translator.

- Second week: Video shooting, translation, video making up.

A web-documentary of 12 episodes that will show you what they think about their world.

- Reflex camera and lenses

- Tripod, travelling rail

- Powerful laptop

We decided to self-finance the flight tickets, that will enable us to travel from continent to continent, as well as the means of transport (10,000€).

Your contribution will flow into the operations "Show me where you live" and "Tell me your dream" (5,500€).

The remaining part of the budget will be funded by sponsors (24,500€).

In 1997, Indian researcher C.K. Prahalad published a daring article entitled: "The strategies for the Bottom Of the Pyramid". His approach is based on the following observation: "The traditional companies target the 800 million richest people of the planet. Not considering the 4 billion people living at the bottom of the economic pyramid would be a serious strategic mistake as well as a brake on economic development in the regions in question. The concept of "Bottom of the Pyramid" (BoP) was born.

Below are a few definitions that will help you understand better the BoP theory:

- The BoP: These are business strategies addressing the needs of individuals living with less than 2$ per day. These people represent a large market for companies, provided that they use the suitable economic models.

- Intrapreneurship: Introduction by an innovative employee, within a classic company, of an entrepreneurial approach connected to the core business of the company, combining profitability and a major social impact.
