Les Lusiades, the new portuguese wine bar & tapas

My project is called Les Lusiades inspired by the epic Portuguese poem of Luis de Camões “The Lusiads” and it consists in the opening a Portuguese wine bar & tapas in Bordeaux. Currently I’m getting my Masters Degree in Wine Law and I want to create an unique space that showcases the Mediterranean flavors of Portugal and expands the range of world wines that can be tasted in Bordeaux. This project, was conceived first and foremost thinking of my mother who, with my father, immigrated to France in search of a better future for me and my brother. Since 2014, she has been working in agricultural fields under difficult working conditions. So, I wanted to create a family business that highlights her talent and passion for Portuguese cuisine. Cooking is a very important element of Portuguese culture; it is a subject that fascinates me and which I am very proud of. From this pride was born a desire to share my roots and popularize traditional Portuguese products. But it is when I integrated my Wine law cursus that my ambition evolved. Thus, by studying the wine market in more depth, I discovered its business potential, especially in Bordeaux where we can find several wines, yet the selection of Portuguese wines remains low. At Les Lusiades, we will offer a wide selection of wines from all geographical areas of Portugal, each region with an unique identity producing wines with distinct and captivating flavors (60 original references). We will also serve authentic and homemade Portuguese tapas and artisanal cheeses and Iberian charcuterie boards. Les Lusiades will be different from the other bars and wine cellars of Bordeaux, because we will offer the discovery of a new country, a new universe, from a rich and complete gastronomic experience. And for those who want to bring a piece of Portugal with them, we will have a gourmet corner and wine cellar that will integrate our establishment.

Allocation of funds

The crowdfunding will help finance the renovation and decoration of the bar, to create a wonderful space with an intriguing atmosphere, developed with prize-winning architect Elisabete Saldanha. The curation of the space is crucial to complete the experience and make the customer truly feel he just traveled to Portugal. With the counsel of expert artisans, we established a budget of 20 000 euros to renovate and decorate the space. The 20, 000 euros will be distributed as follows: - 10,000 euros for the restructuring of the space to create a storage area, toilets for customers and to meet all electrical and air conditioning needs, as well as any additional expenses such as supply management, travel expenses, site installation, removal and evacuation. - 10,000 euros will be for the creation of the bar counter and to furnish the establishment. This help will help us solidify our cash flow so that we can pay the rent during the two months reserved for the renovations before we can start our activity. Two months rent amounting to 3,200 euros. Firstly, our goal is to collect 5 000 euros to help with the expenses, with the hope of surpassing this first goal and reach 10 000 euros to cover half of our renovation spendings.

      Maria's Pão de Lo

      €15

This cake is Maria's speciality, the Chef of the Les Lusiades. The pão-de-ló, or Portuguese sponge cake, is one of the most prolific and irresistible sweets of the Portuguese gastronomic repertoire. It is, at the same time, a tribute to simplicity, consisting of a mixture of solely eggs, sugar, and flour. It is during Easter that pão-de-ló gathers special attention at the table, in particular in the north of Portugal, where regional recipes thrive. Most families have their own version of pão-de-ló, with slight variations that make it either drier or more moist, softer, or denser, according to personal taste and family tradition.

        Niepoort VV Vinhas Velhas Branco

        €50

The VV Vinhas Velhas is a wine produced solely from the grapes of our Quinta de Baixo vineyards. These are grown organically and carry the SATIVA certification. The Quinta de Baixo Vinhas Velhas (Old Vines) is produced from 100-year-old vines of the Maria Gomes and Bical grape varieties, growing in primarily calcareous soils. Thanks to the natural acidity, these vines give us wines with pH levels under 3.0, which make malolactic fermentation possible. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in 1000L foudres which were sourced from the Mosel and are more than 60 years old. The VV beautifully represents the incredible lightness and complexity of Bairrada wines. Tasting notes : A pale and bright lemon-yellow colour characterises this wine’s appearance. Its subtle bouquet of aromas offers notes of tobacco, apricot and citrus, with fleeting floral nuances and aromatic hints of herbs which lend the wine complexity and sophistication. This is a serious and unique white wine that particularly impresses with its structured yet elegant palate, outstanding acidity, and saline touch – you are immediately transported to the limestone soils of the Bairrada region. The finish is long, expressive, and full of spice.
