All together for the future of the world!

Who are we?

My name is Kailing GUO, student of Professional Master in Contemporary Art Market at IESA (institut d'études supérieures des arts) and currently collaborator of the Électriciens Sans Frontières project at Togo and curator of performance Less is Better with artist Alexandre Dang.

Alexandre Dang, a French visual artist who lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. It is devoted to the themes of the environment, nature and life.

What leads us to realize Less is Better?

Beginning in the 1960s, art entered a new era where it embarked on a new path of exploration, from the subject of creation to the methods of creation to the tools of expression. The new changes in art were inextricably linked to the social context of the time. The economic recovery of society, the recent replacement of agriculture by industry, the technological revolution and the development of society led to many changes in human life.

Pop Art, Conceptual Art, Land Art, etc. appeared one after another, and the development of art became more diverse and free. In the field of art, many artists began to deepen their thinking through the act of art production, expressing their views through art forms, asking different questions to answer various problems appeared in society and in global scale, and providing answers to these problems through art forms.

The value of artworks is distinguished by the intelligent dimension, which can influence the way viewers think and act, and by observing our daily life, the links between human activities and environmental pollution are sadly evident: society has reached such a high productivity that the objectives that industry gives itself are not only to satisfy human needs, but also to create new needs that humans have not yet developed.

Why Less is Better?

Until today, the human race has not been able to fully consume or reuse the wastes it generated. There are inevitable contradictions among these subjective needs, intentional activities of humans, the objective attributes of the environment and the law of development of nature. We want to convey the essence of energy to life and the importance of developing a sustainable energy through a performance called Less is Better which will take place in Paris in order to spread the influence and draw attention of the public.

We live in a world that has largely facilitated our lives through the fruits of the industrial revolutions. Everyone indulges in material desires, we have been seduced to believe "more consumption, more pleasure". As a result, the more we consume, the more we pollute the earth. Everyone should be aware of the growing problem of pollution instead of being caught in the trap of consumption.

Therefore, we are going to fill plastic bags with air in 100 L and 30 L size to create "blockage" to show our position. This state of blockage is as if our habitat were invaded by purchased objects, and in a broader perspective, this waste is also taking over the planet. Through Less is Better, people will have a feeling of discomfort. And this serves our purpose!

After achieve Less is Better, the used bags are recycled in two forms: 1. Reused; 2. Given out as compensations for the donators. This project is characterized by zero waste.

Where will the performance be carried out?

A virtual simulation

A virtual simulation

The performance is called Less is Better, reflecting the simplicity to the maximum of a lifestyle deprived of material elements and expressing the theme in an environmentally friendly way.

The performance Less is Better is intended to be presented to visitors in multiple real spaces and in the format of online videos. Considering that this performance contains an educational topic that artist Alexander Dang and I Kailing Guo will bring to everyone's attention. Because we are very much in favor of art having the power and positive effect of influencing those who view it, we choose the following locations: the IESA school elevator and the entrance to the gallery in the IESA school (institut d'études supérieures des arts).

Allocation of funds
