Chers contributeurs, Certains d'entre vous sont très en colères, d'autres très déçus. Il n'y a rien que nous puissions dire pour vous réconforter. La situation est vraiment tendue. Nous avons dû licencier la quasi-totalité du personnel. Il ne reste que 4 personnes : deux employés à temps partiel en ingénierie et communication, Benoit mon associé et moi-même. La feuille de route est assez simple : durcir le produit et rencontrer toutes les sociétés de scanners / imprimantes telles que Epson, Canon, Kodak Alaris, Fujitsu, HP... et des investisseurs privés. Le processus est long car il s’agit d’énormes entreprises. Quoi qu'il en soit, pour le pire ou pour le meilleur, cela ne devrait plus prendre longtemps maintenant avant que nous sachions où nous pouvons aller avec le projet. La fin de l'été est une estimation raisonnable pour que nous soyons fixés. C’est d'ailleurs toute l’énergie qu'il nous reste après ces 3 années à tout donner au projet : temps, argent et sueur. Nous avons maintenant compris que le hardware était un domaine d'activité avec des règles bien particulières liées à la logique industrielle. Pour survivre, il est nécessaire d'avoir le soutien d'un acteur plus important, d'une banque ou d'un industriel. Voilà où nous en sommes. L'échec est malheureusement une possibilité. Dans ce cas nous publierons un rapport détaillé sur la façon dont votre argent a été dépensé, c’est le moins que nous puissions faire. Nous ne pouvons pas encore le faire à ce stade, tant que nous avons l'espoir de continuer, car cela signifierait également la divulgation de nombreuses données stratégiques à nos concurrents. Mais n'abandonnons pas encore. Nous recevons de bonnes marques d'intérêt des investisseurs. Nous sommes dorénavant une société avec très peu d’employés (ce qui signifie une très faible consommation de trésorerie), un produit v1 fonctionnel, des installations de production, de la propriété intellectuelle, et une communauté de 10 000 supporters qui attendent de recevoir et d’utiliser le produit. Une fois libérés de la pénible attente et convaincus, ils peuvent devenir un puissant soutien de départ pour le déploiement du produit à l'échelle internationale. Nous pensons que cette photo est belle et totalement défendable. Nous vous tiendrons informé chaque mois de l'avancement de la situation. Dear all, It is time to update you on our progress with PUPSCAN. We keep working hard. Part of us had to leave last month. We are only 5 people remaining. We still believe in the project and we keep doing our best. We recently got the support of Hewlett Packard Enterprise through Wilco accelerator in Paris. They are providing us with new contacts and market data. About the fundraising, Renaud our CEO met a couple of Japanese investors during a networking event in Paris. Some of them are experimenting with the Pupscan. We are waiting for their feedbacks. As explained in our last communication, we are very sorry but we cannot handle individual answers to your comments. We are keeping you updated through monthly updates. Dear Backers, Let us wish you the best for the year 2019. We hope this year will be filled with success for everyone. Special thanks to all the people who are standing by us everyday while we are doing the hard work of developing the Pupscan project. Some of you are still wondering why we are back advertising online. We will attempt to explain you more clearly. As told before, we are missing the funds for producing the units. The ultimate way we can keep going is by raising money from investors. We are in touch with them. Those who are interested are still requiring market proof. They want to see a significant number of buyers, in a well defined industry, using our product regularly and successfully. For this reason, we must sell the few units we have to accounting professionals. This is the only way to get sales and usage analytics. Some backers are posting negative comments on our online Ads. They are jeopardizing our chance for success. We are begging you to stop so we can reach our goals, raise the funds and deliver everyone at the soonest. Since August 2018 we had 15 people in our team working on the project. Our founders invested large amounts or personal resources in the company. They took out personal bank loans. But bank cannot follow us anymore. Very recently, we had to reduce dramatically the number of employees. Noémie was part of the one who left. From now on, we keep going with 5 people. We still believe that PUPSCAN is a great product that will enhance day-to-day life of many people. We will keep answering your support queries. Dear backers, We are continuing the hard work to meet our B2B market. We have been meeting many professionals. We redesigned totally our sales material. This work must demonstrate that a number of people are willing to pay a high price for the service we are capable of providing. When we will, the company can rebuild its cash reserve and finance the production of your Pupscan units. This same point will convince investors to follow us, and will accelerate the move. So I have to inform you we are going to run online sales experiments during the months of January and February. The website pupscan.com was redesigned for professionals. The first clients will be shipped using the few units we have left. If enough of them are buying, we can launch a small production batch. It would be a good news because in this case we could use the benefit to take care of your units in parallel. I know it could be hard for you to hear that a few people are going to receive Pupscan units before you do. I must ask you to support us anyway and understand we have no other option. Delivering your Pupscan depends on keeping the company alive. Keeping the company alive depends on having clients. These clients will pay a high price of 399EUR including Taxes. This is the end of the year and I am expressing the wish of being successful in selling a lot of Pupscan at the beginning of the year 2019. Dear KissBankers, As we told you before, we are working on our strategy in order to raise funds. We have been working hard since our last talk. We are exploring the B2B market focusing on the Accounting industry. The sales Team is phoning, emailing and meeting a lot of people. The tech team is improving the product, working on camera filters dedicated to receipts and expenses documents. The management team is building the B2B long term vision that will convince new investors to join us. In Europe, one of the responsibilities of an Accounting firm is to type Expenses and Receipts into a software. This work is evolving a lot thanks to AI, and the power of Automated Document Reading. The quality of this Document Reading is related to the quality of the image, this is where we come into the game ! Smartphone can do part of this job and is fine when volumes are low. In other situations Pupscan will do this job faster and better ! This is the market we are exploring right now. Phone calls, meeting, on the field experiments, software customization is what we are doing every day. Attached is a sample image of what we can achieve with receipts and the automated reading result (OCR). We expect to have enough data and demo capabilities on the Accounting Market by the end of this month so we can move further on fundraising by December. The process is already engaged and the BPI (French Public Investment Bank) has committed itself to be part of the next investment tour. As we said in our previous update, we will provide you with more information as soon as we have more visibility on financing. Can we get feedback from backers who have received the PUP? We have already requested backers who have received the PUP to share with us their impressions about the product. We invite those who have not yet done so, to comment on their experience on our page if they wish. Is the project real? The project is real. We cannot fake all the pictures and data you received in our updates. They contain a lot of details about the development and the production line. The comments from our first PUP users are also real. Our office is based in a well-known incubator: Station F (stationf.co) in Paris, France. What did you do with the money we give you? 20K€ is a lot and you were funded 202%? If you do a quick research on the internet, you can see that it is very low money to start a hardware company. The reason for that is the very high up-front investment in electrical, mechanical and software engineering. We now realize that this threshold was totally disconnected from reality and we were really immature at this time. The first part of your funds was used to finance the research, development and production setup. The second part was spent as a pre-payment for a production batch and also to book expensive and long lead time parts components such as chipsets and cameras. We are raising extra funds for the remaining down payments so they can be released and delivered to you. How much money are you raising? We are discussing with investors so we cannot divulgate this very sensitive information. How could the situation change so suddenly from one week to the other? Very few startups are self-funded. We were hoping to be one of them. As we were encountering delays with the software development we run short in cash. So we realized we would need investment. This is quite common. We thought it would be relatively easy given the extraordinary success with our crowdfunding campaign. So we had to wait for the sample production batch before we could present a decent demo to our investors. When we finally got the units we had only a few months in front of us. We knew it was short but we thought still feasible. At this time we decided to keep going and communicate our last estimate of the delivery schedule with you. When our CEO started to really meet with investors in Paris and in San Francisco, there was a bad surprise. He found out that the investment world had changed a lot about hardware companies. Only two years ago, any successful company like Pupscan would have raised $2M easily. But this time is over, there was too many failures of very successful crowdfunded companies never encountering their market. It means before we can raise we have to demonstrate our product market fit. So this is where we are, we are on the road again exploring the market, especially B2B. Can you refund me please? Unfortunately, we can no longer make refunds. We don't own the money anymore as explained in the previous answers. I would like to change my delivery address; how do I proceed? When your PUP is ready to be shipped, you will receive an email to confirm or change your delivery address. You will be able to change it at this moment. Dear KissBankers, I am writing to announce we have to postpone the shipping of your perk once again. As we told you before, the production chain is ready and the first version of the product is completed. Production was already scheduled month by month. Unfortunately, the delay accumulated these last months to complete the product has lead us to the need of raising funds to keep going. This is quite common for a Startup and I thought it would be quite easy given the massive support we received from you, our backers. But I have been defending the project for several weeks in front of investors in Paris and San Francisco, and it will take more time than expected. So we need to postpone the production again and I really can't tell for the moment when we will be able to produce and ship the product. We know what we owe you. We keep doing the hard work with courage and conviction so we can produce and ship your perks as soon as possible. I will keep you updated with as much transparency as possible. Dear KISSBANKERS, That's it, the delivery is close! We are currently in full supply, i.e. we are producing the parts that will be used to assemble the PUP. On September 24, the supply phase ends and the next batch of 1,000 will be produced. From October 8, we will start delivering these first units. Hello KissBankers, Good news! The team is going to China tomorrow, supervising a batch for the 120 first backers. And next week, these first units will be shipped! For the concerned people, we will send you a dedicated email to explain the next steps. Your feedback will be important for the community and for us to perfect the features. For the others, your turn is close! We also have news from other departments: SOFTWARE Firmware update Update DONE! You will now be able to update your PUP from your localization. We have 2 possibilities to update your PUP: 1 - From the PUP Just go on the UPDATE Icon from the carrousel and launch it. Your PUP will update himself. (see the UX-UI section bellow to see how) 2 - From your computer If the first solution is not working for any reasons, you will be able to update it directly from your computer You will be able to download the update file from the internet. Once you've connected your PUP with USB, you just have to drag and drop this file on the PUP folder who just appear. Camera Auto exposure DONE! Calibration: each PUP is unique and needs to be calibrated in factory. Now the calibration is driven directly from inside the Pup which makes it a lot easier and faster. It opens the door for a lot of improvements such as "continuous auto calibration" so your device would improve each time you take a picture. PRODUCTION/SHIPPING The production line has been installed and will start this week in our factory in Shenzhen to produce the first Pups in series. Our logistician based in Hong Kong has, meanwhile, received the list of addresses and already printed the labels to put the pups in packages as soon as they arrive at the warehouse and then forward them to their final destinations. RESEARCH & DEVELOPPEMENT We are implementing a new machine learning algorithm who is analyzing thousands of documents with different physical parameters (light environment, size and background material), to provide a very effective auto cropping solution. UX/UI --- WIFI --- To send your document in the fastest way to your destination, you just have to connect your PUP to a Wi-Fi network. But some questions around this subject pop up on the support section. How do I connect Wi-Fi to my PUP? When screen is front of you, click on the top hat right button. You will access to the Wi-Fi list. On the top you'll find add icon (symbolized by a “+”) <img alt="Rqyicxcbw7bugqpvgiix-1531317780" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/531610/rqyicxcbw7bugqpvgiix-1531317780.png"> Just click on the "+". Yes, a hundred if you like! No Wi-Fi? It can happen. Don't worry the scans are saved on the PUP for all scenarios waiting a normal connection to be send. You can still use your PUP with native PDF and JPEG scenarios. Just connect your PUP to your computer with the USB cable and discharge the files like any usb key. --- UPDATE --- The Update feature is ready! Let's see how to use it. Dear KissBankers, It took us a long time to get back to you because we have a lot of work to finalize your PUP and organize deliveries. You are over 10,000 backers and our team now has 12 full-time staff. It is a huge industrial project that exists thanks to you. Some of you worry about us constantly postponing the delivery date. The product is really wonderful, and I want to reassure you YOU WILL ALL GET YOUR PUP:1) We still own 100% of the funds required for production (and we just raised 250K € more from Business Angels).2) The mechanical and electronic development of the PUP is 100% complete.3) Partners for delivery logistics are signed.4) The certifications have been successfully obtained.5) We are developing the customer service website (in English, French, Chinese, Japanese and Korean) which will allow you to confirm your address, get a delivery date and track your shipments. The hardest part is done! The only think slowing us down is the software : mainly because we have a shortage of manpower and we are really struggling to recruit developers. The job market is really tense in Paris and we do not want to subcontract the software development which is our field of excellence. Please keep trusting us, it is just a matter of weeks, maybe 1 or 2 months, 3 months should a huge disaster happen, but it will take no longer. Dear backers, We really want to thank you for your continued interest in the PUP project. Together, we are creating a new product that's going to help many people. Thanks to you and crowdfunding, hundreds of innovating products were able to come into existence in the last few years. However, this is no ordinary purchase: crowdfunding is a human adventure as well as an industrial challenge. Please stay patient just a bit longer, and rest assured you will soon have your PUP! R&D is almost finalized, and production is now quite involved and on track. However, as you well know, « Hardware is Hard »: it is better to spend more time on production in order to guarantee the best quality product. Recently, our team in charge of tests informed us that one of the materials of the bottom of the PUP was the source of short circuits that could have potentially shortened its lifespan. In order to avoid any future risk, we decided to change from a zinc bottom to a plastic bottom. Bonus advantage: using plastic will allow for better shock absorption, and lighten the weight of the PUP even further. That operation demanded we ordered new components and the making of new plastic-specific molds, leading to, as you can guess, a greater work charge, which imposed on us to delay the first deliveries a little bit further.
