The Submarine Brass Band, un projet cuivré et solidaire

We are eight students from Ecole Centrale Paris, in France: Alister, Damien, Antoine, Auguste, Kevin, Marc, Walid and Marine.

It all began with a meeting two years ago when we met for the first time in the school’s brass band first rehearsal. It continued later on when we heard about projects connecting music and international solidarity from former students. We began dreaming about our own project: exchanging with other cultures and helping children from around the world through music.

Now we have become far better at playing music together, and our dream became reality. This is why we are proud to come to you with this one year project we have designed: using music as a very powerful personal development tool.

During six months, from February 7th to August 8th 2014, we will work with 3 local NGOs in 3 different countries: Cambodia, Madagascar and Bolivia. These NGOs take care of children who had a very difficult childhood.

We will run music workshops. Our final goal is to build a show with the children which they will be able to perform in front of their comrades. There will be a wide variety of workshops, from body percussion to singing, also including building instruments from scrap.

Unicef estimates the number of children living in the street to 130 million. From undernourishment to begging, these children live in very difficult conditions. Everywhere local NGOs try to help them and to offer them education. But most of these NGOs lack money, equipment or simply staff.

We want to help both children and NGOs by including music to their educational program. We will also participate in their communication, both in their own country and in France.

Every single one of us in the team has seen his life changed thanks to music. From our own personal experience we consider music to be an incredible tool for personal development. Music makes us more aware of others and ourselves. It stimulates our creativity and makes us more confident.

Moreover, learning music develops concentration, perseverance and ability to work with other people. Those qualities are not only useful in music, they are essential for anyone to make good use of any academic education. Nevertheless these children often lack such qualities and this is why we are convinced such workshops can help.

The Submarine Brass Band is the association which has been designing this project for more than a year now. As we were studying engineering, we have also been working as a team. We selected NGOs in order to prepare our course of actions and to raise funds for the project.

The Submarine Brass Band is also a music band. We rehearse every week and do frequently play for various events. Living as a band allows us to improve the project in many ways: it gives us workshop ideas and allows the NGOs and our project to be more visible since we promote it every time we play. It even helps us to fund the project as all the money we earn as a group is dedicated to the project.

Therefore The Submarine Brass Band is a project about music and solidarity. It was built by eight students who are very happy and motivated by the idea of sharing their passion together: music.

To obtain more information, go to our great Website (sorry it’s only available in French so far) or listen to us again and again on our Soundcloud account. Don’t hesitate and go have a look now!

Allocation of funds

Our budget predicts a total of 45k€ in order to happen. It is described as follows:

• Transportation (tickets have already been bought!): 24,000€

• Travel expenses (insurance, vaccine, visas…): 4,000€

• Everyday life: 11,000€

• Communication (website, flyers, photograph exhibition…): 3,000€

• IT material (Hard drives, camera…): 1,000€

• Workshop material: 2,000€

We already have part of that money:

• Our own money: 27,000€

• Being paid as a music band (for weddings, runs etc.): we have earned 10,000€ so far and hope to achieve 12,000€

• Our sponsors: we have got 3,000€ from different sponsors (Univerity of Centrale Paris Student Council, council of Hauts-de-Seine, city of Sceaux, CROUS) and hope for an additional 1,000€ from private sponsors.

• YOU, through this crowd funding campaign on KissKissBankBank, on whose moral and financial support we place a lot of hope with a goal of 2,000€.

If this crowd funding campaign is a way for us to raise the money we need for the project, it is also a way to gather people around it. It means you are willing to help us and perhaps to follow us so that we can live The Submarine Brass Band project with you.

Because every little bit helps, because every time we are encouraged we want to go further, and because simply sharing this page makes our project more visible, the eight of us would like to say:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
