Butterflies, cameras, children, a puppy, and a lot of joy. Spare two minutes of from your daily routine to catch a small glimpse into the world of the Anjali Photo Workshops.

A crucial part of the Anjali Photo Workshops are our team of amazing volunteer tutors!

We are deeply grateful and appreciative to all the photographers who have volunteered their time and expertise to volunteer at the Anjali Photo Workshops. Many, like the workshop coordinator Sohrab Hura, have returned again and again to be a part of this initative. We asked some of them to share with us their reflections on the experience, and we hope their words will shed some light on the value of the Anjali Photo Workshops.

Thank you, Tutors!

“For me, the biggest takeaway for the children from the workshop apart from the practical side of things such as learning to communicate in English and so on, is the opportunity for them to find a way of expressing themselves and their daily realities through the language of photography. Their warmth and innocence is often reflected brilliantly in the photographs. They can be more genuine and earnest in their pursuit of photography than most of us.” – Sean Lee, Singapore

“What I remember from my first time with the children of Anjali is when I brought them to the temples in Angkor complex. They are so pure and honest. They just shoot what they want to shoot; people, nature, temples and so on. What impressed me with Daney for example is when she walked into the group of crowded tourists, she simply took action, smiled at them, was with them and she could capture things.” – Kim Hak, Cambodia

“Engaging with the Anjali children over the past two years, I have attempted to provide them the condition to explore their sense of wonder. The children are then divided into different groups, each headed by a tutor. All our tutors are professional photographers who volunteer their time and expertise to be a part of the workshops.

During the 10 days of the workshops, the tutors bring their groups to new and different places in Siem Reap on excursion trips. The older children also get to bring home their digital cameras to photograph their home environments, friends and families.

In addition to outdoor photography sessions, the tutors guide the participants on different photography techniques, give them practical tips and advice, and also engage them in discussions on their photographs during an editing process.

At the end of the workshops, the photographs shown in a special slideshow as part of the Angkor Photo Festival on Children’s Day – a special day dedicated to the kids of Anjali House!

Children’s Day in 2012.
